Martin on Dessers injury, 'outside noise' & shots faced
Russell Martin has been speaking to the media before Rangers face Alloa Atheltic in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend. Here are the key lines from the Ibrox boss: The knee injury suffered by Cyriel Dessers in midweek as not as bad as first feared. The striker is "still stiff and sore" but could be fit to face Club Brugge on Tuesday night. On reports Jefte is poised for a £6m move to Palmeiras: "I think the club will update you as and when it becomes something. He's in this morning. I guess that's all I can give you as the manager right now." On links to Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy: "He doesn't play for us, so I can't tell you anything about him. I've never met a kid, never spoke to him in my life. So, yeah, I don't really know." Martin won't "make 11 changes" but is set to shuffle the team for the Alloa tie, which is one Rangers "want to win but also have to balance". He says: "We had five games in 14 days. Some of the guys played a lot of minutes. So it's a chance for some people to get on the pitch." On Rangers' Scottish Cup defeat to lower-league Queen's Park last season: "It's completely gone. Some of them [the players] are probably part of that. I don't see any benefit in me bringing it up." After struggling to break down Dundee's low block in the 1-1 draw last weekend, Rangers have "done a lot of work on that since and hopefully you'll see that tomorrow". On criticism of Rangers' early-season performances, Martin is keen to block out "outside noise". He adds: "When you come and work for a big club like this, you have to accept that there's going to be so many opinions, ex-players, supporters, but we have to just focus on what we can focus on. So it really doesn't affect, or it shouldn't affect what we're doing here." Martin says he was speaking to a member of the maintenance staff who said, "We are turning the tank around gaffer" and that's exactly how he feels about the situation. Martin "loved" that the players were frustrated with some of the aspects of the performance in Plzen "because I think their understanding is growing. Their belief in what they're doing is growing. And at some point, it will all really pay off for them". On Rangers conceding 97 shots in their opening six games, Martin is "not happy" with it but says "perspective and context" is required. He adds: "I got made aware of it this week by the analysts who then did a real detailed breakdown of it. So over half the shots were from well outside the box. The two games that we've given away too many chances are Panathinaikos and Plzen, and we're playing two teams away from home in Europe. They're 2-0 and 3-0 down and committing numbers forward that we haven't usually seen them doing. So we can definitely negate that and stop that." Martin has "no problem" with Andy Halliday criticising his tactics: "I like Andy, I regard him as a really good ex-team-and a good person. But when you work in the media, you have to give an opinion, right? Although I never have said we're going to play an inverted full-back, so I have told him that."

Blue Jays' Max Scherzer Sends 3-Word Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Message
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Toronto Blue Jays built on a strong lead in the American League East division with a win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, and it featured a clutch moment from the franchise star. In the seventh inning, after the offense was unable to get anything going against their former teammate Matthew Boyd, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a chance to take the lead. Facing an 0-and-2 count, he hit a curveball over the wall in left field for a go-ahead home run, and the Blue Jays maintained that lead to win the game. It was particularly heroic for Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer, who left the game after giving up one run on a solo home run to Cubs' first baseman Michael Busch. From the dugout, though, he was optimistic that one of his teammates would come through. "Just kept telling myself we're not going to lose this game 1-0," Scherzer told The Athletic's Mitch Bannon. "I'm not losing this game on the solo shot. Somebody's going to come through for us. Just kept repeating that in my head." (Photo by) More Sloter/Getty And, as Scherzer was focusing on that belief, Guerrero realized it. "And, finally, Vladdy," the future Hall of Fame pitcher added, per Bannon. While Guerrero played the hero on Thursday, Scherzer's performance might be even more encouraging for the Blue Jays as they look to turn their strong second half of the season into a deep playoff run. After spending a significant amount of time on the injured list this year, Scherzer turned in a vintage performance against the Cubs. If he can maintain that form, the Blue Jays will have a strong playoff rotation with Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt, plus trade deadline addition Shane Bieber waiting in the wings. Cubs' No. 1 Prospect Explains 'Welcome to the League' Moment Against Blue Jays
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Not many bounces are going the Chicago Cubs' way right now, and apparently, that luck even extends to those who just joined the team. The Cubs called up their top prospect, outfielder Owen Caissie, to make his major league debut on Thursday. The 23-year-old Canadian had a homecoming of sorts, joining Chicago for its final game in a series at the Rogers Centre against the Toronto Blue Jays. With the Cubs seeking a win to salvage a series split, Caissie came up in his first plate appearance against future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, and he did all he could do. (Photo by)Launching a line drive into the left-center field gap, Caissie thought for all the world that he had extra bases. But out of nowhere, Blue Jays left fielder Davis Schneider, a utility player not typically known for his defensive prowess, came hurtling in to make a sensational diving grab as the ball flew over his right shoulder. Caissie couldn't help but chuckle, because he'd hit the ball right on the screws. "Just hit the ball and run," Caissie said, per Keegan Matheson of "Schneider made a great play, so it was a 'welcome to the league' moment." Unfortunately for Caissie, he went on to finish the game 0-for-4, and the Cubs dropped a 2-1 decision to fall to 68-52. They're now eight games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. Caissie is from Burlington, Ontario, which is only about an hour drive from Rogers Centre. He was playing in front of a large group of friends and family, so large he couldn't approximate just how many there were. Now, Caissie will get his first taste of Wrigley Field, as the Cubs are set to host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game series beginning Friday.
