Token.io Announces Strategic Investment by HSBC
European fintech Token.io has today announced that HSBC has become a strategic investor, signaling their continued collaboration and focus on delivering cutting-edge payment solutions.
As revealed at Money2020 Europe, HSBC's investment marks an important milestone for Token.io, a company specialising in account-to-account (A2A) payment infrastructure, which has partnered with the bank since 2019 to power its successful HSBC Open Payments solution.
Todd Clyde, CEO of Token.io, comments: 'We are excited to deepen our partnership with HSBC as we embark on this collaboration. This investment will not only accelerate Token.io's growth and innovation, it will also advance our shared vision of making Pay by Bank a mainstream payment method — delivering benefits for HSBC's customers across the region.'
Manish Kohli, Head of Global Payments Solutions at HSBC, comments: 'Our investment in Token.io reflects the trust and confidence we have in their team and technology, and our firm belief in the role that innovative Open Banking solutions play in transforming the payments experience for both corporates and consumers.'
HSBC's Open Payments solution enables customers to initiate direct bank payments from third-party platforms quickly and securely. Building upon this foundation, HSBC is also broadening its adoption of Token.io's infrastructure for Pay by Bank, offering clients a secure, fast, and convenient option for peer-to-peer payments, account deposits and loan repayments.
Underpinned by open banking and real-time payment infrastructure, Pay by Bank reduces the cost and complexity of payments. It also simplifies the customer experience; users pay directly from their bank accounts, quickly and securely authenticating transactions using their banking app. Already, Token.io 's solutions enable nearly anyone with a bank account in the UK and Europe to use Pay by Bank.
Given the benefits, analysts predict that three in four Europeans will regularly use Pay by Bank by 2029, and that payment volumes will increase by 30% this year. By 2030, European's use of Pay by Bank for e-commerce is expected to eclipse all other digital payment methods, second only to wallets.
Token.io has also secured additional funding from an overwhelming majority of its existing investors, reflecting their support for this significant industry development.

Is American Express Winning the Loyalty Battle Against Fintechs?
In today's world, where digital-first fintech companies are transforming the payments scene, American Express Co AXP is up against a significant challenge — keeping its loyal cardholders engaged while also appealing to a new wave of tech-savvy customers. AXP seems to be holding its ground, and in some instances, even bolstering its position. The company has a unique edge thanks to a loyalty ecosystem built over many years. This is anchored by its Membership Reward program, exclusive partnerships and a range of premium perks. In 2023, the network volume was around $1.7 billion, which rose 5% year over year in 2024. It further rose 6% year over year in the first half of 2025. With its strategies, AXP has the ability to retain its consumer base. In recent years, AXP has also leaned into digital transformation, rolling out AI-powered fraud detection, tailored offers and faster onboarding processes. These initiatives are designed to bridge the tech gap with fintechs while still holding the prestigious image that has been a hallmark of the brand for decades. By forming strategic partnerships in areas like travel, dining and entertainment, the company is enhancing customer engagement. While fintech companies might have the edge with their fresh ideas and quick adaptability, AXP shines when it comes to providing premium perks and building strong and lasting relationships. If the company can keep striking the right balance between its traditional and innovative approach, it is likely to stay at the forefront of loyalty — even as the fintech landscape evolves. How Are Competitors Faring? Some of AXP's competitors in the payments space include Mastercard Incorporated MA and Visa Inc. V. Mastercard has positioned itself as a tech-savvy leader, pouring resources into cybersecurity, AI-driven fraud prevention and teaming up with super-apps to keep itself at the heart of everyday transactions. Mastercard's purchase transactions rose 9.6% year over year in the first half of 2025. Visa continues to hold its position as the top player in payments volume, thanks to its extensive network of merchant acceptance and a strong focus on innovations like tokenization, real-time payments and cross-border transactions. Visa's payments volume increased 8% year over year on a constant-dollar basis in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. American Express' Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Shares of AXP have lost 0.2% in the year-to-date period against the industry's growth of 2.6%. Australia's Tyro Payments confirms takeover interest from separate parties
(Reuters) -Tyro Payments said on Wednesday it has received takeover approaches from multiple parties in recent months, moving to clarify speculation after its shares were halted on the Australian exchange in the prior session. The stock surged more than 10% before trading was paused on Tuesday, with the company later saying its shares would remain suspended pending a response to a price query. Tyro did not disclose the identities of the interested parties or any financial details of the proposals. "The interest received is not at a level that the Tyro Board has considered representative of Tyro's intrinsic value," the payments provider said, but it remains open to engaging with offers that deliver sufficient value to shareholders. Tyro's market value stood at A$565.77 million ($369.33 million), according to LSEG data. The Australian Financial Review reported in April that U.S. fintech giant Stripe had held preliminary talks with Tyro, citing people with detailed knowledge on those discussions. Tyro's shares have faced volatility since private equity firm Potentia Capital abandoned a takeover bid in 2023 that valued the company at A$875 million. ($1 = 1.5319 Australian dollars)
