Plans to transform former seafront lido approved

Yahoo15-05-2025

A former seafront lido in Weston-super-Mare is to be given a multi-million pound revamp.
The Tropicana was shut down 25 years ago and left to fall into disrepair until graffiti artist Banksy transformed the derelict site into his Dismaland bemusement park in 2015.
Since then, the 1930s building has been hired out for events but now councillors have approved plans for it to be transformed into a "nationally significant" venue hosting crowds of up to 5,000 people.
North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell said it was a "really exciting" scheme which the council is "absolutely going to deliver - unlike all the failed schemes of the past".

The new scheme will see the existing 1980s building demolished and replaced by a new purpose-built indoor venue, while the 1930s frontage on the promenade will be restored.
At a planning committee meeting on Wednesday, Alan Rice from the Weston Civic Society warned adding a "large, monolithic building" to the centre of the seafront would "obstruct and significantly harm the iconic view".
Councillor Tim Snaden described the proposed building as "architectural vandalism".
But councillor John Crockford-Hawley said although the new building was an "awkwardly built bulky slab" the benefits to the town were outweighed by the harm to the Tropicana.
Councillor Terry Porter said it may not be the "best bit of design" but added delaying a decision could jeopardise the funding.
The committee approved the plans and Mr Bell said he was "absolutely delighted".
"People can look forward to it opening next year," he said.
Councillor Mike Solomon said the venue will not only "attract the best operator" but "take the venue into the future".
"With the planning application now approved, it's full steam ahead to reinvent the Tropicana, a key destination at the heart of Weston's seafront," he said.
Construction is due to begin this summer and be complete by summer 2026.
The work is being funded by £8.7m from the government's Levelling Up Fund, which may be withdrawn if not used by March 2026, according to the the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Banksy collector from south Essex to part with three original works at auction

AN Essex art dealer has decided to part with three original works by street artist Banksy at auction - which are now set to fetch over £1 million. The trio of artworks - including two pieces which were saved from destruction - are being sold by Banksy collector John Brandler. Mr Brandler, who owns the Brandler Galleries in Brentwood, currently boasts 13 Banksy pieces in his £25 million collection. Among them is DJ on a Cloud from 1999, a rare early piece which was rescued from being thrown out when a shop in Bath was being cleared. It is one of Banksy's earliest known wall paintings and is expected to fetch between £350,000–£450,000 when it is sold on June 13. Another called Two Rats with Saw from 2003, which was also spared from the scrap heap before it was recovered and preserved, could fetch £145,000–£165,000. Both pieces have since gone on to tour the world and will are being offered for public sale for the first time in the "landmark" auction. It is also set to fetch £350,000–£450,000. Mr Brandler also famously owns Seasons Greetings, the only known Banksy artwork to have inspired a full-length play: Port Talbot Gotta Banksy. He said: 'Banksy is the only artist I know of whose single painting inspired a stage production. 'It shows the cultural weight his work carries - and these three pieces are no exception. "They very nearly disappeared forever. Instead, they're now part of modern art history.' DJ on a Cloud was created during a two-week commission in the hallway of a shop on Walcot Street, Bath. This now-iconic work was moments away from being discarded before it was salvaged from a door panel just before being dumped. Family Target is a spray paint on canvas work said to depict Banksy's "signature themes of family, violence and social critique." Two Rats with Saw was left behind in an office when Banksy parted ways with his first business partner Jon Swinstead All three pieces boast "exceptional exhibition history" having featured in major global exhibitions from Rome and Palermo to New York's Bowery and Broadway between 2019 and 2023. Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: 'These are more than artworks - they are survivors, cultural landmarks, and provocations all rolled into one. "We're proud to be offering them to a global audience. "Banksy's work continues to hold a mirror up to society in a way that's both playful and powerful - and collectors have responded to that message in extraordinary ways.' Banksy, born in 1974, is the anonymous British artist and political activist known for his stencil-based street art. Often laced with satire and social commentary, his work has appeared on buildings, bridges and public spaces worldwide - sparking debate and reshaping the art world. The works will be sold as part of Hansons 20th Century, Modern Art & Design Auction on June 13 with bidding available worldwide online and in person.

Hand-painted Captain Scarlet titles and Banksy work among auction items

A hand-painted Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons end title and an artwork from Banksy are among items being auctioned. The sale features more than 430 examples of music, animation, comics and gaming memorabilia as well as contemporary and street art pieces. The piece by illustrator Ronald Embleton accompanied the final credits of Captain Scarlet, the puppet-based series similar to Thunderbirds and also created by the animation duo Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The image of the 'indestructible' hero, which shows Scarlet diving as inflammable barrels explode, was held in a private collection for more than 20 years, before becoming part of the auction by Propstore. It is estimated at £22,000 to £44,000. Also in the sale is graffiti artist Og Slick's Money Mouse sculpture, which has an estimate of between £14,000 and £28,000, and a circular artwork bearing a black, white and red face by Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp that could go for £3,000 to £6,000. READ MORE: The Banksy jobs" target="_blank">work is a Di-Faced Tenner, which features Diana, Princess of Wales. That is listed at between £500 and £1,000 with 100% of the wining bid going to development agency Unicef. Bolton has had its fair share of suspected Banksy pieces. Last November, a Banksy-style piece of art was spotted in Bolton town centre and it's sparked rumours as to whether it could be the man himself. The piece in Bolton depicts a child wearing a life jacket paddling with an oar in his hands. Little is known about the mysterious artist although much of his work is associated with political causes. The Bolton mural was later claimed by British graffiti artist, Zedsy – which has been entitled 'Adrift' in a post on Instagram. Music memorabilia includes a Noel Gallagher-signed Fender Acoustasonic guitar, which also has proceeds going to Unicef, with an estimate of £5,000 to £10,000, as well as a Tupac autograph and a framed Dark Side Of The Moon album cover print by Storm Thorgerson that could both go for between £4,000 and £8,000 each. There are also £8,000 to £16,000-listed prints from 1951 science fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still, and a royal charity premiere for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back that took place in 1980. The Empire Day Is May 20 poster, featuring Darth Vader, was designed by Ralph McQuarrie. It references the original UK Empire Day of Queen Victoria's birthday in May. In 1958, Empire Day was changed to Commonwealth Day, and took place on March 11 this year. Stephen Lane, founder and chief executive of Propstore, said: 'We're incredibly excited to launch our Pop Culture Auction – a dynamic new auction to add to Propstore's calendar that pulls together multiple categories of influential work across music, animation, poster design, contemporary art and more. 'Whether you're an experienced collector or exploring for the first time, the auction offers a wide range of unique and significant pieces, some of which are coming to market for the first time.' Online bidding opens on June 3, before the auction takes place on July 2.
