Former Czech ice hockey great Josef Černý has died. He was 85

Josef Černý–one of the highest-scoring forwards in the former Czechoslovakia who helped his country win three Olympic medals–has died. He was 85. His former Czech club, Kometa Brno, announced his death on Thursday. Černý scored 75 goals in his 210 appearances for Czechoslovakia. With 478 goals in the domestic league and in international games, he was the sixth-best scorer in the country, according to the Sport daily. He said he considered his biggest one to be the second goal in a memorable 2-0 victory over the Soviet Union at the 1969 world championship in Stockholm. That was the first major tournament after the Soviet-led occupation of Czechoslovakia in August of the previous year that crushed a period of liberal reforms known as the Prague Spring. 'I scored more than 400 goals, but the Russian one I value the most,' he once said. Černý played in the team that finished runner-up at the Olympic tournament in Grenoble in 1968 and claimed bronze in 1964 in Innsbruck and in 1972 in Sapporo. He also won four silver medals and four bronzes at world championships. He retired from international hockey briefly before the 1972 worlds in Prague that Czechoslovakia won. In his 21 seasons in the domestic league, he became the first player to score 400 goals. Černý rejected an option to emigrate in fear of the persecution of his family, he once said. After retirement, he turned to coaching at home and in Austria and Italy. In 2007, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Czech ice hockey association offered condolences to his relatives, calling him a legendary forward.

Sakura Trees Enchant Visitors at Japan Pavilion During Esports World Cup

At the Esports World Cup (EWC 2025) held at Riyadh City Boulevard, visitors were drawn to the Japan Pavilion by the graceful presence of sakura trees—cherry blossoms that serve as powerful cultural symbols of Japan. As part of the pavilion's immersive cultural showcase, Crunchyroll, the leading platform for Japanese anime, presented a striking sculpture inspired by these iconic blooms. Sakura trees, known for their delicate pink blossoms that bloom in spring, are deeply embedded in Japanese culture. Beyond their beauty, they hold culinary value: salted cherry blossoms are brewed into sakura tea—traditionally served to offer good wishes—and their leaves are used to wrap sakura mochi, a fragrant and flavorful rice cake enjoyed during seasonal celebrations. The installation provided guests with a chance to experience both the visual elegance and the emotional depth of one of Japan's most beloved natural and cultural treasures. Saudi Arabia's Esports World Cup aims to position Riyadh as global gaming hub

Saudi Arabia is hoping to establish itself as a global hub for esports, with major tournaments, dedicated gaming venues, and government support fuelling the industry's expansion. The recent 'Esports World Cup' in Riyadh, which featured the Dota 2 final between Team Spirit and Team Falcons, drew large crowds and enthusiastic fans. Mike McCabe, COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, cited government support and a national gaming strategy as key factors in the sector's growth. 'We have a national gaming and esports strategy, which is one of the pillars of Vision 2030… when you couple that with a very motivated government and an incredibly passionate population, it makes perfect sense,' he said. Saudi gamers say the changes are noticeable at the community level. 'Kids and young people are becoming more involved and informed,' said Hassan Al Himyari, a local gamer. 'Now every child has a game they regularly play, whether it's PUBG, Fortnite, Valorant, or others.' The Esports World Cup is in its second annual iteration in Riyadh, drawing over 2,000 competitors from 84 countries to the heart of Saudi Arabia. The event, running until August 24, boasts a $70 million prize pool. The tournament features popular titles such as Dota 2, Rennsport, and Valorant, captivating gaming enthusiasts worldwide. Sports, esports and gaming have been part of the crown prince's transformation plan, known as Vision 2030, in which the government is pouring hundreds of billions of dollars to diversify the kingdom's economy and reduce its reliance on oil. Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group, owned by sovereign wealth fund PIF, said in 2022 it will invest 142 billion riyals ($37.8 billion) in initiatives aimed at making Saudi Arabia a global hub for gaming. Under the plan, the kingdom aims to set up 250 game companies locally, which will create 39,000 jobs, and raise the sector's contribution to Saudi GDP to 50 billion riyals by 2030.
