The New York Times published its very first crossword puzzle on February 15, 1942, in the Sunday Magazine. Created by Charles Erlenkotter and edited by Margaret Farrar, this marked a turning point in American print media, introducing wordplay to a broader audience. Over the decades, the Times has steadily expanded its games portfolio to include Mini Crossword (launched in 2014), along with popular offerings like Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Tiles.
In 2022, the Times made headlines again by acquiring the viral hit Wordle, followed by the successful launch of Connections and now its latest puzzle sensation — Strands.
What Is NYT Strands?
Strands is the Times' newest
daily word puzzle
. Each game presents a themed challenge, where players identify related words hidden in a grid of 48 letters (6x8 layout). A key highlight is the
Spangram
— a theme word that stretches from one edge of the board to the opposite side, acting as a central clue.
Strands allows players to form words by connecting letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Found theme words are highlighted in blue, and the Spangram appears in yellow. To assist players, the game also offers a bonus mechanic: finding three non-theme words triggers a helpful letter hint.

Blake Lively comes face-to-face with Justin Baldoni in day-long deposition; 'It Ends With Us' star questioned under oath on sexual harassment allegations

Actress Blake Lively and 'It Ends With Us' actor-director Justin Baldoni came face-to-face for the first time since their messy legal battle which set off a wave of lawsuits began last December. The Deposition According to TMZ, Baldoni was physically present in the room during Lively's deposition, which forms an integral part of the ongoing legal battle. The deposition was held behind closed doors in a private setting, with only attorneys from both parties, a court reporter, and a videographer in attendance. ABC News confirmed the testimony will be sealed and will not be released to the public. Questioned Under Oath Reports further state that Lively sat for the all-day deposition on July 31, where she was questioned under oath by Baldoni's attorneys about her allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation during the production of the film. The actress in her original complaint, filed in December 2024, had accused the director of engaging in inappropriate behaviour during filming, including discussing his sex life, making comments about her body, and improvising intimate scenes without prior agreement. Baldoni, on the other hand, claimed that Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds , and her publicist engaged in a coordinated effort to destroy his reputation and filed a $400 million defamation countersuit. The Legal Drama That lawsuit was dismissed in early June by Judge Lewis J. Liman, who ruled that Lively's statements were protected from defamation claims. A separate $250 million libel suit against The New York Times was also dismissed. Following the dismissal of Baldoni's lawsuits, Freedman indicated that his client would not be refiling the defamation claims and would instead focus on challenging Lively's sexual harassment allegations in court. Prior to the deposition, Baldoni's attorney Freedman made headlines for suggesting it be held "at Madison Square Garden, sell tickets or stream it, and donate every dollar to organisations helping victims of domestic abuse.' Upcoming Hearing Freedman has since confirmed that Baldoni will take the stand during the trial, which is scheduled for March 2026. Lively's attorney, Mike Gottlieb, has also confirmed that she will testify during the proceedings. Cameras will, however, not be allowed in the courtroom.

Hogan, who made wrestling a household name and brought the sport into the mainstream, passed away at the age of 71 following a cardiac arrest. In honor of a great Floridian, Hulk Hogan, we are lowering the flags at the capitol and in Pinellas County tomorrow. Additionally, I am officially declaring tomorrow, August 1st, 2025, as 'Hulk Hogan Day" in in peace, brother. — Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) July 31, 2025 Terry Eugene Bollea, widely known by his stage name Hulk Hogan, rose to fame with his iconic handlebar moustache, colorful bandanas, and memorable catchphrases such as 'Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?" He became the most recognizable figure in professional wrestling during the 1980s and early 1990s. Hogan headlined eight of the first nine WrestleMania events and secured the WWE championship six times. He also ventured into films, TV shows, and commercials, further cementing his celebrity status. His charisma and theatrical performances attracted millions of fans during a period when wrestling lacked the glamour it would later attain, largely thanks to Hogan's contributions to the sport. Hogan's wrestling career was diverse, featuring roles from an all-American babyface hero to the villainous 'Hollywood Hogan.' He was first inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 but was removed in 2015 after a leaked sex tape published by Gawker revealed him making racist remarks while being secretly recorded. He subsequently won a lawsuit against Gawker, receiving a significant financial settlement that led to the outlet's bankruptcy. In 2020, Hulk Hogan was re-inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, this time as a member of the NWO, alongside wrestling legends Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
