Rapist repeatedly attacked woman and then fled to Ireland to evade cops
A man who fled to Ireland after repeatedly attacking a woman has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years for rape.
A court has heard how Sultan Amjad made a bid to evade police after his victim reported him following several incidents of non-consensual sexual assaults in September of last year.
However, Amjad was later arrested in Ireland where his details had been circulated as a wanted person. He was charged with rape and brought before the courts.
The victim told police how Amjad had subjected her to an 'emotionally and physically abusive relationship'.
She had also been 'manipulated financially and degraded' by Amjad and felt 'broken, afraid and unsure' of herself following the attacks.
With the support of police the victim, whose identity remains anonymous due to the nature of the offences, issued an emotional statement encouraging others to speak out if they are the victim of abuse.

"There are moments in life that change you forever — moments that challenge everything you thought you knew about strength, courage, and healing," she said.
"Reporting the rape I experienced was one of those moments; it was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but one that I do not regret, because I was foreseen with no judgment or indifference, but with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering support.'
She paid tribute to Detective Constable Sam Cullen who 'treated me with dignity and respect'.
'In a time when I felt broken, afraid, and unsure of myself, he saw me — not just as a victim, but as a person worthy of being heard, believed, and protected.
'His patience, his clear communication, and his calm reassurance helped me take the first steps in what felt like an impossible journey.'
She told how she had been kept informed at every stage, 'treated with care and professionalism, and never once made to feel alone in what I was facing'.
'The updates, the follow-through, the consistent reassurance, all of it helped rebuild a sense of safety and control that I thought I had lost forever.
"Even one conviction represents something monumental to me — it is proof that my voice mattered. This process has been incredibly painful, but because of the care and professionalism shown by you and your team, it has also been healing. You reminded me that I was not alone, that I was not to blame, and that I deserved to be fought for. That kind of support changes lives — it changed mine.'
Amjad, aged 23, of Kirkmanshulme Lane, in Longsight, Manchester was sentenced to four-and-a-half years for rape. He was also given a five-year restraining order against his victim.
DC Cullen, of GMP paid tribute to the woman for their bravery in reporting these incidents to us, 'which is not an easy thing to do'.
'The victim told us she was subjected to an emotionally and physically abusive relationship for some time where she was manipulated financially and degraded by Amjad,' he said.
'Time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused – no matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you. We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators. We will take your allegations seriously and treat you with dignity and respect.'

Pit bull-type dog that mauled woman in Cork was ‘beloved family pet'
It is likely that the woman will require plastic surgery once she has recovered from her injuries The dog at the centre of a Cork mauling was a family pet which was a pit bull cross-breed. The revelation came as a woman badly injured in the attack is recovering from surgery at Cork University Hospital (CUH). Her injuries, while not life threatening, have been described as serious as the dog was apparently able to knock her to the ground and repeatedly bite her head and upper body. It is likely that the woman, aged in her 30s, will require plastic surgery once she has recovered from her injuries. The incident occurred in a housing estate in the Ballyvolane area after 6pm on Friday, and the woman's desperate screams for help alerted local residents. Horrified locals tried to help the woman and attempted to fend off the enraged dog. The large animal had apparently knocked the woman to the ground and was attempting to maul her arms, face and head. Courageous locals rushed to the scene and tried to get the dog away from the woman and protect her from further injury. At least one other person suffered bite injuries as they bravely tried to protect the woman. Gardaí, supported by armed officers, attended the scene along with paramedics, dog control officers and a vet. The woman was brought to safety, and the animal was euthanised. Locals said the woman was left traumatised by the mauling. She was treated at the scene before being rushed by ambulance to CUH. A second individual who suffered bite injuries during the incident was treated at the scene but did not require hospitalisation. Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The dog involved is understood to have been a beloved family pet and had never before displayed any aggressive traits. Locals were deeply shocked by the mauling. The area involved has a lot of children playing in greens and open areas. Ireland has witnessed a number of serious dog attacks over recent years. Two people, including a young baby, died in separate attacks in Waterford in 2021 and in Limerick in 2024. A young boy was left with serious facial injuries after he was attacked by an XL Bully dog in Wexford in 2022. A woman narrowly escaped fatal injuries in Cork in 2016 when she was attacked by her partner's bull terrier and surgeons subsequently had to fight to save her arm. XL Bullys were effectively outlawed each year, with owners required to surrender their animals or apply for special permission to keep them. A pit bull type dog. 'Family man' was dealing drugs to support his children, court told
Thomas Verbickas (29) was trying to hide cocaine and cannabis when gardaí twice caught him A 'family man' who turned to drug dealing to support his children while unemployed made a 'very poor choice', his defence solicitor has said. Thomas Verbickas (29) was trying to hide cocaine and cannabis when gardaí twice caught him on the streets in a 'small-scale operation'. Judge Susan Fay adjourned the case for a community service assessment, recommending 200 hours instead of an 18-month sentence. Verbickas, of Belcamp Lane, Coolock, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs with intent to sell or supply. Dublin District Court heard he was caught hiding €720 of cocaine in a bush after gardaí saw him acting suspiciously at Hampton Wood Lawn, Finglas, on March 13, 2024. The following April 3, he was seen discarding a package at Hampton Wood Square and it contained €100 of cannabis and €500 of cocaine. 'He's a family man who was trying to support his children and made a very poor choice to engage in this conduct as a way of raising money,' defence solicitor Andrew Broderick said. It was 'to keep himself and his family going'. The accused had since 'mended his ways, was very remorseful and actively looking for work in construction'. Verbickas was eager to do community service if required. Stock image Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 20th
