Former South Africa versatile batter AB de Villiers isn't tempted to a return to international cricket or a high-profile tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite proving his insatiable appetite for piling up runs in the World Championship of Legends.
The 41-year-old pulled the curtains down on his illustrious adventures in the international circuit in 2018, and since then hasn't looked back. On Thursday, during his second appearance since his last competitive game in 2021, he turned back the clock in the World Championship of Legends while representing the South African Champions.
Often recognised as 'Mr 360', de Villiers unleashed a barrage of boundaries from his heavily loaded arsenal in Leicestershire. He pummelled England Champions, clobbered every delivery that landed in his arc and returned unbeaten with 116 from a mere 51 deliveries.
Despite getting the thrill of his sizzling exploits, de Villiers doesn't entertain the idea of returning to top-level cricket again and told ANI, "I am not playing international or big franchise cricket again. This is the king of leagues I will commit to."

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced a 'blanket ban' on any future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL), and slammed the tournament organisers for being 'biased' and hypocritical. The move comes after a sequence of events in recent days in which the team representing India boycotted their matches against the side representing Pakistan citing tensions between the two countries. India Champions first gave their group stage match against Pakistan Champions a miss after which they also withdrew from the semi-final against the same opposition. Pakistan went on to lose the final to South Africa Champions by nine wickets. 'The PCB, during its 79th BoG meeting held virtually under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi reviewed with considerable disappointment WCL's appalling conduct of awarding points to a willfully forfeiting team, and the content of the press releases of the WCL announcing the cancellation of the scheduled India vs Pakistan legends matches, which were tainted with hypocrisy and bias,' said the PCB in its statement. The PCB also slammed the WCL for its statement in response to the backlash it received in the days ahead of the match between the teams representing India and Pakistan. 'The WCL's apology for 'hurting the sentiments', whilst being farcical, inadvertently acknowledges that the cancellation was not based on cricketing merit, but rather on succumbing to a specific nationalistic narrative. This bias, masquerading as sensitivity, sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community,' it said. Earlier, it was reported that the PCB has banned the the use of the country's name in all privately-run cricket leagues. Telecom Asia Sport, quoting sources, said the PCB took the decision during its Board of Directors meeting on Thursday in which senior officials 'expressed frustration after Indian players twice refused to take the field against Pakistan during the WCL's second edition.' The tournament consisted of teams representing India, Pakistan, South Africa, the West Indies and Australia. All teams were made of former players with Brett Lee leading Australia Champions, Shahid Afridi leading Pakistan Champions, Eoin Morgan captaining England Champions, AB de Villiers being skipper of South Africa Champions and Chris Gayle leading West Indies Champions. India Champions were captained by Yuvraj Singh.

Kotak also commented with a heart emoji. While the WCL didn't get a BCCI and ICC approval, the tournament has got the green light from the England and Wales Cricket Board (WCL). However, the highlight of WCL 2025 was India Champions' withdrawal against Pakistan Champions twice, including the semifinal in the light of Pahalgam attack. Batting first, Pakistan Champions rode on a 76 from opener Sharjeel Khan to post 195/5 in 20 overs. In reply, South Africa Champions lost the wicket of Hashim Amla as De Villiers (120 not out) and JP Duminy (50 not out) to romp home with 3.1 overs to spare. While ABD smashed 12 fours and seven sixes in his 60-ball known, Duminy accounted for four fours and two sixes. It was also ABD's third hundred in WCL 2025.

World Championship of Legends owner Harshit Tomar has questioned how he was wrong in going ahead with the league stage game between India and Pakistan, mentioning how India and Pakistan are going to play each other in the upcoming Women's World Cup as well as the Asia Cup. Former India cricketers Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan and Yusuf Pathan pulled out of the contest a day before the game and the organisers had to call the match off. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board on Sunday, August 3, announced a blanket ban on its cricketers' participation in future editions of the WCL, accusing the tournament organisers of being 'biased" and lacking sporting integrity. 'We are going ahead with the tournament in England, which means that everything was taken care of 8-10 months in advance. Our schedule was revealed in December. The Champions Trophy was played in February," Tomar said while speaking on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. 'I cannot express my sadness at what happened in Pahalgam. We supported Operation Sindoor. The war happened and then it was stopped. Then, the sports between the two countries started to get normal," Tomar said.
