The tribunal called it a clear quid pro quo. It also flagged Kochhar's failure to disclose her conflict of interest while being on the loan-sanctioning committee.
Assets under ED attachment include a flat transferred for ₹11 lakh to a trust linked to Deepak Kochhar, despite being purchased earlier by a Videocon-related firm for ₹3.25 crore.
The tribunal said earlier authorities ignored key facts, calling their order 'perverse'.
Live Events
The ED's case, along with a CBI FIR for conspiracy and cheating, is now set to proceed in trial court. The Supreme Court has also issued notices on the Kochhars' bail.
A letter Kochhar wrote in 2016 to her daughter, encouraging honesty and fair play, has resurfaced, now seen in sharp contrast to the tribunal's findings.
Chanda Kochhar's letter from 2016 resurfaces
In the middle of all this, a letter Chanda Kochhar wrote to her daughter Aarti back in 2016, as published by NDTV has gone viral again. It paints a picture of values and resilience, one that now reads very differently, given the circumstances. Here's the full text:
Dear Aarti,
As I sat in the plane from London to Mumbai, I realised that you will be graduating from your management school in a few days. And that you will be coming back to India to pursue your career and build your life.
I want to share with you some lessons that I have learnt in life, and I hope that these will help you as you embark on your own beautiful journey.
1. When you grow up, become financially independent. You must be able to take your own calls, and the only way to do that is to be financially independent.
2. Do not let your gender define you. I grew up in a time when career options for women were considered limited. I chose to study management because my mother encouraged me. She told me I could pursue whatever career I wanted. So I did.
3. Don't take shortcuts. Never lose sight of what is right. Because whatever you do, wherever you go, your values will eventually catch up with you.
4. Be kind. No matter what. People may not always be nice to you. But you have a choice to rise above that and be kind in return. It leaves you lighter. Happier.
5. Work hard. You will never regret working hard. Yes, you may get tired. But you will never feel bitter or resentful.
6. Find balance. There is no formula for it. You will need to create your own equation between work, relationships and yourself. But remember that balance is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
7. Remember that happiness is a journey, not a destination. Don't postpone your happiness. Live in the moment. Take time to appreciate the little joys of life.
As you start this new chapter of your life, I want you to know that you are never alone. I will always be there for you.
Love always,
Mumma
What was the alleged deal: Loan first, kickback next day
In August 2009, ICICI Bank sanctioned a ₹300 crore loan to Videocon International. The very next day, ₹64 crore was transferred from Supreme Energy, a Videocon-linked firm, to NuPower Renewables — run by Kochhar's husband, Deepak.
That timing is what raised red flags. The ED and CBI flagged it as a kickback disguised as investment. The tribunal agreed.
Kochhar sat on the bank's credit committee that cleared the loan, never disclosed her husband's ties to the borrower, and flagged the proposal as 'urgent'. All of it breached ICICI's own policies.
The tribunal called this concealment deliberate and criminal.
South Mumbai flat for ₹11 lakh?
In 2016, a flat in Mumbai's CCI Chambers — originally bought by a Videocon firm for ₹3.25 crore — was transferred to a Kochhar family trust for just ₹11 lakh.
The tribunal called it 'proceeds of crime', not a property deal.
Deepak Kochhar's ownership web
The Kochhars had claimed that NuPower had changed ownership. But the tribunal found that Deepak Kochhar remained in control the entire time, indirectly holding over 95% of it through layered firms.
Statements from Videocon's Venugopal Dhoot backed that finding.
Timeline of events
2009: Loan sanctioned. ₹64 crore transferred next day.
2016–18: Whistleblower complaints. Media reports. CBI probe begins.
2019: FIR filed against the Kochhars and Dhoot.
2022: All three arrested, then released on interim bail.
2025: Tribunal rules Kochhar guilty.
The 2020 ruling had dismissed the ED's attachment of Kochhar assets. The tribunal now calls that decision 'perverse' and factually wrong.
Key evidence like Dhoot's testimony and transaction timing had been ignored.
The case will proceed to trial. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Kochhars in response to the CBI's petition to cancel their bail. With this ruling, the legal tide has turned.

Pakistan-linked arms rackets busted in Amritsar, 9 arrested

Amritsar: In coordinated operations targeting Pakistan-linked cross-border arms trafficking, Punjab Police on Friday announced the arrest of nine individuals — including a juvenile — and the seizure of 13 sophisticated pistols in a major crackdown on smuggling modules. Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the counter-intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar had dismantled a Pakistan-backed network, arresting five operatives and recovering six pistols — four 9mm Glock handguns and two .30-bore pistols — along with magazines and ammunition. The arrested individuals were Jagroop Singh of Dhun, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke, and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki — all from Tarn Taran district — along with Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar district. Police believe they were acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Rana, tasked with delivering arms to criminal gangs in Punjab to destabilise the sensitive border region. In a separate but parallel development, Amritsar police commissionerate uncovered two more smuggling modules, arresting four more suspects, including a 17-year-old, and seizing seven pistols. Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the weapons haul included two Glock pistols, four .30-bore Star pistols, one .32-bore pistol, six live cartridges, and a motorcycle used for consignment delivery. Those arrested in the commissionerate operation were Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of Bhagwanpura in Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh 'Babbal' (43) of Antaryami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and the unnamed juvenile from Tarn Taran. Preliminary investigations revealed that some suspects lived near the international border and retrieved drone-dropped weapons from designated coordinates. Bhullar said the weapons were linked to gang rivalries and intended to spark unrest. Two of the suspects, Pradeep and Jarnail, were associates of the late gangster Ravneet Singh 'Sonu Mota', who had rivalries with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. "The weapons recovered were supplied by Pakistan-based handlers and handed over to the accused prior to Sonu Mota's death," Bhullar said, adding that the timely seizure had likely prevented a major criminal incident. Separate cases have been registered under the Arms Act at the State Special Operation Cell (Amritsar), Gate Hakima police station, and B-Division police station. Authorities concerned say the operations are part of an intensified strategy to dismantle transnational criminal networks operating along Punjab's section of the international border. PMC-HDIL case: ED files add'l chargesheet on 1.7k-acre lands

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a third supplementary chargesheet in the Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC Bank) and Housing Development & Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (PMC-HDIL) loan fraud case. The recent chargesheet involves a part of an approximately 1,700 acre land parcels in Sindhudurg district, which the agency has already attached and requested the court for confiscation. In the chargesheet, the ED accused Rakesh Wadhawan and Sarang Wadhawan, along with others, of using money defrauded from PMC Bank to purchase the agriculture lands in benami names, including their employees. They intended to offer the lands at a higher rate for the proposed Vijay Durg port project, which did not materialise due to the ED's action. The state govt is keen to develop the port, and discussions suggested that through restitution, the land would revert to PMC Bank. With the consent of the ED, PMC Bank may explore the possibility of handing it over to the state for the port project while protecting its financial interests. They allegedly fraudulently replaced 44 loan accounts with 21,049 fictitious loan accounts, causing a wrongful loss of Rs 4,355 crore to PMC Bank and corresponding gains to themselves and others. So far, the ED has provisionally attached assets worth over Rs 772 crore in the case and filed four chargesheets naming a total 46 accused. The ED said, "The present supplementary chargesheet further strengthens the case by establishing the money trail from HDIL accounts for land acquisition in Sindhudurg through benamidars led by Mukesh Khadpe." During the investigation, the ED found Wadhawans diverted proceeds of crime from the bank accounts of HDIL and its group of companies, "to various persons/entities to acquire huge agricultural lands from several villagers in Sindhudurg district in the benami names of farmers/employees, led by accused Mukesh Khadpe".

Court rap for ED over ‘misleading' post on raid on Jain's premises

New Delhi: A court has criticised the Enforcement Directorate for posting information in a misleading manner on its X account in 2022 regarding a search on the premises of AAP functionary and the then Delhi govt minister Satyendar Jain . The agency should act "impartially", the court observed. The observations came on Thursday from the court of special judge Jitendra Singh while upholding the Feb 20 order of a trial court that there was no prima facie case to proceed against BJP parliamentarian Bansuri Swaraj under criminal defamation provisions. Jain had filed a defamation case against Swaraj over her comments made on the basis of ED's post. "It is incumbent upon an investigative agency such as ED to act impartially and uphold the principles of fairness and due process. Any dissemination of information, including but not limited to official social media platforms, must be accurate, non-misleading and free from sensationalism," the judge pointed out. The presentation of facts in a manner that is misleading, scandalous or intended to defame or politically prejudice a person would not only undermine the integrity of the agency but may also amount to an abuse of power and violation of the individual's fundamental rights, including the right to reputation under Article 21 of the Constitution, he opined. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi On June 7, 2022, ED posted on X that it had conducted a search on the premises of Jain and others and various incriminating documents, including cash worth 2.85 crore and gold coins weighing 1.80kg, were seized. The judge said the manner in which the phrase "at the premises of Satyendar Kumar Jain and others" was used in the tweet tended to create an impression that the recoveries were made from the former minister's premises. The subsequent inclusion of the phrase, "and others", in a subtle and ambiguous manner, following the explicit naming of Jain, failed to clearly attribute the recoveries to "others" whose residences were also raided, he added. Jain, who was arrested in May 2022 on allegations of money laundering, had challenged the Feb 20 order by a magisterial court, declining to take cognisance of his defamation case against Swaraj. In his complaint, Jain alleged that Swaraj had made defamatory statements against him during an interview aired on Oct 5, 2023, on a news channel, to tarnish his image. He added that the statements were made in the context of an ED raid at his house.
