Asean Political-Security Blueprint nears full implementation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Political-Security Community (APSC) Blueprint 2025 has reached a 99.6 per cent implementation rate, reflecting the region's strong commitment to cohesion and security cooperation.
This was among matters reviewed during the 29th APSC Council Meeting chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
"The blueprint continues to serve as a vital framework for strengthening Asean's political-security architecture, promoting greater cohesion and building strategic trust across the region.
"The minister also reviewed ongoing efforts related to the implementation of the APSC Blueprint 2025 and discussed preparations for its End-Term Review.
"The review is expected to inform Asean's strategic direction as the region transitions into a new phase of cooperation under the Asean Community Vision 2045," said APSC in a statement after the meeting concluded.
The council also said Asean foreign ministers and Timor-Leste, during the meeting, had exchanged views in the Sectoral Bodies under the APSC Pillar.
It also said looking ahead, Asean remains committed to advancing the Asean Community Vision 2045 and finalising the next APSC Strategic Plan, which will chart a pragmatic and forward-looking path for Asean's role in both regional and global affairs.
Earlier, Mohamad said the Strategic Plan 2045 would serve as a vital compass for Asean's political-security cooperation over the next two decades, anchored in peace, resilience and people-centred growth.

This was highlighted by Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam Mikhail Baranov in his remarks at the Russian National Day reception held at the Songket Ballroom Wednesday night. 'Our bilateral relations with Brunei Darussalam are developing in a spirit of mutual respect and constructive engagement,' said the ambassador. 'In July 2024, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Brunei's Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Erywan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Mohd Yusof, on the sidelines of Asean-related events, reaffirming our shared interest in strengthening political dialogue.' Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Mohd Isham Jaafar was present as the guest of honour, representing the Brunei Government. Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, and invited guests from various sectors. The event commenced with the national anthems of Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Federation, followed by welcoming remarks from Ambassador Baranov. He noted that a recent visit by a Deputy Minister from the Prime Minister's Office to Moscow for the 13th Meeting of Senior Security Officials included a series of productive bilateral discussions, further strengthening cooperation in the field of security. 'Russia and Brunei also maintain close coordination within international institutions, where both countries often share similar views on global challenges and the principles that should govern international relations,' said the ambassador. 'I am confident that our partnership will continue to expand across many areas — from energy and education to cultural exchange and regional security — for the benefit of our peoples and in the interest of peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.' The evening concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony by the ambassador and the guest of honour to mark the celebration of Russia Day. The reception reflected the strong spirit of friendship between Brunei Darussalam and Russia and Russia's commitment to further deepening cooperation across multiple sectors for mutual benefit and global peace. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Hawana 2025 theme highlights role of journalists in the AI era, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) is the government's recognition of the important role that media practitioners play in shaping an informed society, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. With the theme "Journalism in the New Era: Balancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Ethics", Fahmi said it was crucial to adapt to advancements in AI in journalism without compromising ethical principles, information accuracy or social responsibility. "On behalf of the organiser, the Communications Ministry and the implementing agency and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), I express my utmost appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for officiating in the main event of the Hawana 2025 celebration today. "This year's theme highlights the importance of adapting developments in AI in journalism while upholding ethical principles, accuracy of information and social responsibility. "With immense pride and gratitude, I also warmly welcome our guests from Asean member countries who have joined us to commemorate this momentous occasion. "Your presence not only reflects the universal importance of journalism, but also underscores the global impact of the work you do," he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the National Journalists' Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur today. Present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai. Fahmi also said Malaysia, as Asean chair, was proud to provide a platform where voices from Asean could converge to address shared challenges, promote sustainable growth and strengthen unity among nations. The media, he added, had always played a vital role as the bridge between these important deliberations and the global public. "While you are here, we hope you will also take the opportunity to experience the rich cultural tapestry, warm hospitality, and dynamic spirit that make Malaysia truly unique," he said. The Hawana 2025 celebration aimed to recognise the role and contributions of media practitioners in the nation's development. May 29 had been gazetted as National Journalists' Day to commemorate the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu on May 29, 1939, honouring the contributions and services of media practitioners to the nation.
