Brunei's anti-drug efforts shared at regional parliamentary meeting
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The 8th Meeting of the AIPA Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD), hosted by the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia, was held on June 10 and 11 in Pahang.
The Legislative Council (LegCo) was represented by Datuk Seri Setia Awang Suyoi Osman and Safiah Sheikh Abdul Salam, members of the LegCo.
The meeting was officiated by Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia and President of AIPA Tan Sri Johari Abdul and was attended by over 50 delegates from the parliaments of Asean member states.
The 8th AIPACODD meeting discussed the role of parliaments in shaping effective policies and emphasised collective cooperation among Asean member parliaments in combating the persistent threat of drugs, which continues to pose challenges to regional security, public health and well-being in realising the shared aspiration of a drug-free Asean.
The delegation from Brunei Darussalam shared a report on the drug situation in the country and efforts in addressing drug abuse issues.
The delegation also had the opportunity to exchange views on regional challenges, which were presented by representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Asean Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD), as well as Malaysian enforcement and health agencies.
The 8th AIPACODD meeting considered a draft resolution themed 'Uniting Parliaments for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges', which was agreed to be tabled at the 46th AIPA General Assembly scheduled to take place in September. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties. The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company. 'The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters,' she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today. Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights. Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation. KLIA assault: Immigration union demands swift action, better security
KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia has condemned the assault on a female immigration officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday. Its president, Ajeet Singh, said the union takes the incident seriously and has urged the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) to take proactive measures to safeguard officers on duty as well as travellers. He said provoking or assaulting civil servants is subject to legal action, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a Malaysian or foreign citizen. "Any action that contravenes Malaysian law can be considered a challenge to the country's legal sovereignty, and every tourist is obliged to respect the laws of the country they are visiting," he said in a statement today. He also urged the Home Ministry to revisit its proposal to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all counters to enhance monitoring of immigration procedures. He called for the investigation to be expedited and for the perpetrators to be prosecuted without compromise. "The union will continue to provide full support to the officers involved, including welfare and legal assistance, until the justice process is completed. "Immigration officers are the front line of the country's sovereignty. "Abusing them while on duty is not only rude, but also tarnishes the country's image and threatens security at international ports of entry," he said. Earlier, a Chinese national was arrested after allegedly behaving aggressively and injuring an immigration counter officer during a departure check at KLIA 1. The incident occurred at 7.40pm when the woman, accompanied by a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration clearance. The officer on duty discovered that they had no records of entry into Malaysia and referred the matter to a supervisor for further verification. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency said the suspect became agitated when instructed to allow other passengers to proceed while checks were carried out. She allegedly hurled abuse at the officer, pulled her headscarf, and pushed her head towards a pillar in front of the counter.

PM Anwar meets UKEC to discuss brain drain and student cooperation
