6.3 magnitude earthquake jolts Papua New Guinea, tremors felt in Indonesia
According to the United States Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was nearly 6.3 and the depth was around 10kms. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center added that the region had no threat of a tsunami after being hit by the earthquake.
The epicentre of the earthquake was around 193 kilometres northwest of the town of Abepura in Papua. The places around the area, including Jayapura in Papua, Indonesia; Vanimo and Sandaun in Papua New Guinea; Agats in South Papua, Indonesia; and Nabire in Central Papua, Indonesia, also experienced tremors when the calamity shook the area.
Peak ground velocity during the earthquake was at nearly 20 cms per second, which falls under the category of 'very strong shaking' according to USGS' official website.
Frequently shaken by earthquakes
This comes just about five days after the New Britain region in Papua New Guinea was jolted by another quake with a magnitude of 5.9, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The quake was at a depth of 58 km (36.04 miles), EMSC said.
Last month, Papua New Guinea experienced similar tremors, when an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude struck the region. The earthquake was at a depth of 106 kms (66 miles), according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ)
Earlier in April 2025, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea's New Ireland province on April 12, Saturday.
The earthquake in April struck at a depth of 72 km (44 miles) about 115 km southeast of the town of Kokopo, read the USGS website.
Papua New Guinea's close proximity to the Pacific ring of fire, which stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin and is characterized by frequent and intense tectonic activity, makes it vulnerable to natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis every year.
Although the calamities do not reportedly cause significant widespread devastation, they often trigger aftershocks and landslides, that disrupt daily lives.

Tropical storm Podul disrupts southern China schools, courts
Tropical storm Podul on Thursday dumped torrential rain on southern China, still reeling from record downpours last week, and disrupted hospitals, schools and courts in Hong Kong after tearing through Taiwan and leaving 143 people injured. The hearing of Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy advocate Jimmy Lai was cancelled after authorities put in place their highest-level 'black' rainstorm warning, as supporters queued under umbrellas outside the court. Medical authorities also announced that out-patient clinics would remain shut until the rain had passed. Meanwhile, airports across the region reported cancellation rates of around 20%, according to data from Flightmaster, as Podul pelted parts of the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Hunan and Jiangxi with more than 70 mm (2.76 inches) of rain an hour. Over a third of flights to Quanzhou – a key textile, footwear and apparel export hub – were cancelled, with analysts warning extreme weather events increasingly pose a threat to growth in the world's second-largest economy. China has been battling with record rainfall in its north and south as well as prolonged heatwaves in its interior. The government on Thursday announced 430 million yuan ($59.9 million) in fresh funding for disaster relief, taking the total allocated since April to at least 5.8 billion yuan. Across Guangdong, 75,000 people were evacuated last week, as a record 622.6 mm (24.5 inches) of rain fell on Guangzhou, the provincial capital from August 2-6 – almost three times the average rainfall for the city in August – killing at least seven people. Hong Kong last week experienced its heaviest August rainfall since 1884 last Tuesday. Authorities in Guangdong's Meizhou closed all the highways on Thursday due to the downpour, state media reported, while the high-speed railway linking the high-tech hubs of Shenzhen and Hangzhou in eastern Zhejiang province, some 1,200 km (745 miles) away, was also suspended.

Typhoon Podul brings no major damage as it crosses Taiwan, heads for China
Taipei, Aug 13 (AP) Typhoon Podul crossed southern Taiwan, where authorities closed schools and government offices as heavy rain threatened more damage to agriculture in the island's southeast. No major damage was reported. The storm hit Taitung county on the east coast shortly after noon, moving across the south of the island at about 36 kilometres per hour. By 5:00 pm (0900 GMT) its centre was just off Taiwan's west coast, churning out into the Taiwan Strait and China, according to the Central Weather Administration. In China, the coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong recalled fishing boats to port and evacuated around 15,000 people living near the coast to shelters further inland. Taiwanese media reported one person missing on the east coast. Typhoons like Podul typically hit Taiwan's east coast hard before losing speed and strength as they pass over the Central Mountain Range before continuing toward the Chinese coast. Podul measured 120 kilometres across and was expected to broaden even while losing strength as the storm moved westward. The areas affected were well south of the capital, Taipei, along with Taiwan's main international airport and high-tech industrial base. Around a dozen flights that would have travelled south toward the path of the storm were delayed or cancelled. The counties and cities of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yunlin, Pingtung and Hualien on the east coast and the island group of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait were taking the brunt of the storm. Along with flooding, typhoons routinely damage fruit and other cash crops and bring landslides through the island's centre. Much of central and southern Taiwan was badly hit by heavy rains in recent weeks that caused severe damage to crops but minimal casualties, while also knocking out electricity to rural areas that took weeks to repair.
