LAHAD DATU: The family of a former student at SMK (A) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, Papar lodged a police report over claims linking their daughter to the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Muhammad Yasim when contacted said his 16-year-old daughter had already transferred to Kolej Vokasional Lahad Datu (KVLD) early 2025.
Advertisement 'My daughter studies at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in 2022 (form 1) to 2024 (form 3) and transferred to KVLD early this year. The incident involving Zara Qairina occurred when my daughter no longer studies at the school. 'Her photo was shared in a video that was uploaded by an account on Tik Tok saying she was the murderer of Zara Qairina. The video garnered more than 10,000 views and full of negative comments towards our daughter and family,' he said. The family who feared for their safety lodged a police report at Lahad Datu Police Headquarters at 2.30pm on August 8. The report was also lodged as a reference for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Court if the video involving his daughter was not taken down. According to Muhammad Yasim, the report was lodged against a Tik Tok user that uploaded his daughter's photo which was taken in 2024. He said although the Tik Tok account has apologized and deleted the video, there are some individuals who were still spreading the fake news. 'I strongly denied the slander against my daughter, Nurul Qurratu Aini, and I will not hesitate to take legal action against any individual who links my daughter to this case,' he stressed. Inquest Into Zara Qairina's Death To Begin Sept 3
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Coroner's Court here has set Sept 3 to commence inquest proceedings for Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Coroner Azreena Aziz today scheduled the proceedings to run from Sept 3 to 4, Sept 8 to 12, Sept 17 to 19 and Sept 22 to 30. Earlier, Conducting Officer Mohd Fairus Johari, who is also a Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP), said the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday applied for an inquiry into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina. He said 195 witnesses are involved in the case, but the final witness list will be determined before the inquest begins. Azreena requested that the witness list be finalised at least two days before the start of proceedings. Other Conducting Officers are Dana Arabi Wazani, Afiq Agoes and Dacia Jane Romanus, all of whom are also DPPs. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here on July 17. She had been admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar at 4 am on July 16. In a statement last Wednesday, the AGC said an inquest would be conducted into Zara Qairina's death after reviewing the investigation report submitted by police.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 18): A Coroner's Court here today fixed several dates in September to hear an inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, to determine whether any criminal elements were involved. Sabah State Court director Azreena Aziz, presiding as a coroner, reserved Sept 3-4, 8-12, 17-19 and 22-30 for the hearing. Today was the first mention of the inquest. In a statement on Aug 13, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said it had decided to conduct an inquest to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding Zara Qairina's death. The AGC said the decision was made after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police in connection with the death of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha student on Aug 12. According to the AGC, the inquest proceedings aim to establish the cause of death and determine whether there were any criminal elements involved. 'This process will be conducted at the Coroner's Court independently and transparently under the provisions of the law,' the statement read. The AGC said the decision to proceed with an inquest was in line with subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code [Act 593]. On Aug 7, the legal team for Zara Qairina's family issued a statement requesting the AGC to instruct an inquest to be held to investigate whether there is criminal elements were involved in her death death. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I in Kota Kinabalu on July 17 after being admitted a day earlier. Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu set to hear 195 witnesses in Zara Qairina inquest, starting Sept 3
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 18 — The Coroner's Court here has fixed September 3 for the start of the inquest into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir to determine any criminal elements. Lawyer for the family, Hamid Ismail, said that the inquest will be heard before coroner judge Azreena Aziz and could involve up to 195 witnesses, though the final number will be determined by the Attorney General's Chambers. 'The mention for the request has been completed smoothly. The inquest is set for September 3 until September 30, 2025,' he told reporters after court proceedings here. The court fixed the hearings for 3 to 4 September, 8 to 12 September, 17 to 19 September and 22 to 30 September. Reporters were at the courthouse this morning ahead of the 9am proceedings, with police present to maintain order around the premises. Last week, the Attorney General's Chambers decided to hold an inquest into the death of Zara Qairina after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the police. The inquest will be conducted under subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593). The death of the 13-year-old SMKA Tun Mustapha student in Papar, Sabah after an alleged bullying incident has sparked public outrage nationwide and renewed calls for safer schools.
