BRUSSELS -- The European Union seeks to form a "competitiveness alliance" with Japan that involves working together to mine rare-earth elements, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told Nikkei recently.
Von der Leyen visits Japan for two days starting Tuesday. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will hold a summit with von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa on Wednesday.
