
Age of Asean: Building trust in Southeast Asia's digital future
In the bustling streets of Jakarta, 50-year-old Siti sits behind her food stall, where the aroma and sizzle of fried rice and grilled satay mingles with the hum of passing motorbikes.
With a range of digital food delivery and e-commerce platforms helping her connect with more customers, business has never been better.
Siti is just one of 70 million micro entrepreneurs driving economic growth in the Asean region.
Over the last two decades, the region has seen its real GDP grow by five per cent annually, reaching US$3.8 trillion. in 2023, making it the fifth-largest economy globally.
With digitalisation empowering microenterprises like Siti's, it is no surprise that Asean's digital economy is poised to reach almost US$2 trillion by 2030.
A foundational piece of this growing digital economy is the proliferation of instant payment systems (IPS), more recently, the rapid adoption of low-cost national QR payment channels.
From Indonesia's QRIS to Cambodia's KHQR and Thailand's PromptPay, Asean has swiftly adopted the digital way to pay, with the share of digital payments to gross transaction volume already surpassing cash with just 48 per cent in 2022 to about 56 per cent in 2024.
With payments transmitted directly to the merchant's digital accounts, microenterprises can now easily manage their books, helping them monitor the growth of their business.
Asean continues to make strides in building and expanding cross-border QR payment linkages.
Through the commitment and hard work of the Asean Working Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems (WC-PSS), several Asean countries – Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – are now able to conduct cross-border QR payment or person-to-person funds transfers.
This translates into bigger business opportunities for microenterprises. Yet despite the increasing digital savviness, microenterprises still face hurdles in accessing much-needed financing.
This is exacerbated by microenterprises' mistrust in the digital ecosystem due to cases of fraud, hidden fees, and lack of recourse, which could potentially undermine their growth.
In Indonesia, for example, only 41 per cent of merchants using QRIS completed at least one transaction per month, and 18 per cent remained dormant, largely due to trust erosion from unexpected charges and unresolved disputes.
It is therefore imperative to build and ensure MSMEs' continued trust in digital payments and the broader financial ecosystem.
The United Nations' Better Than Cash Alliance's Trust Quotient Policy Toolkit, which was developed together with the Asean Working Committee on Financial Inclusion (WC-FINC) and noted by Asean Ministers and Central Bank Governors, reflects the region's collective commitment to this vision.
Focusing on fraud, hidden fees, and lack of recourse, the Trust Quotient Policy Toolkit provides policy and regulatory recommendations to promote clear pricing, accessible dispute resolution, and transparent data practices, which will then help ensure micro-merchants confidently adopt digital payments in a safer, more accountable ecosystem.
Ensuring quick and seamless recourse mechanisms, particularly for small-value disputes, is critical for fostering trust as delays or unresolved issues can significantly damage confidence.
Programmes such as the 'BOB' (BSP Online Buddy) chatbot initiative by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showcase how technology can simplify dispute resolution and build trust.
Similarly, the Philippines' Paleng-QR Ph and Indonesia's QRIS SIAP have helped merchants through financial literacy, streamlined tools, and responsive support. Simplified data privacy disclosures can further empower merchants to navigate digital systems confidently.
Moreover, integrating support for digital financial services into existing MSME development programmes can be transformative. Indonesia's Jakpreneur program, for instance, onboards merchants to digital platforms but also provides training in financial literacy and business management.
For Siti, the success of her business relies not just on the convenience of digital payments but her trust in continued use of digital payments which grants her a formal financial history.
By addressing challenges such as hidden fees, lack of recourse, and data privacy concerns, Asean can ensure that entrepreneurs like Siti feel confident in trusting and embracing digital transformation and ensure that no enterprise is left behind.

Dropping Formula One was a mistake, says Sepang boss
KUALA LUMPUR: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif believes it was a mistake for Malaysia to stop hosting Formula One races here. Shafriman said it is now very difficult to bring back the race to Sepang as there is a long waiting list for a slot on the Formula One calendar. SIC is currently preparing to negotiate a contract renewal for MotoGP hosting rights with Dorna Sports. "We do not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. We let Formula One go and now it is very hard to get it back. I hope we don't make the same mistake with MotoGP," said Shafriman recently. "There is a waiting list to get back in (for Formula One) and of course, the costs are very expensive. We were quoted US$70 million race fees (by owners Liberty Media). "That is for each event (edition of Malaysian GP). That does not include our setup costs which are in the region of RM10 to RM20 million for each event. "In total, it would cost us more than RM300 million to bring back the race (annually). "A lot of people (countries) are queuing so it won't be easy. But if we are really serious about it, then maybe we can start the conversation." Sepang hosted Formula One between 1999 to 2017 but dropped the event due to high organising costs, dwindling global interest in the championship and disappointing ticket sales in Malaysia. Formula One has, however, been given a new lease of life since being taken over by current owners Liberty Media in 2017. The Drive to Survive Netflix series, which began airing in 2019, and the introduction of Saturday sprint races in 2021 has significantly boosted interest in the championship. Shafriman added there is strong interest in bringing back the event to Sepang and believes it could be successful if done the right way. "It is not just SIC that wants Formula One. Many other stakeholders from both the government as well as the corporate sector also want it back," said Shafriman. "We have to look at how Singapore is hosting it. They have everyone on board in making it a success, from the ministries to the corporate sector to the hotels. Everybody contributes. "It has to be like that if we bring it back here." Shafriman, however, stressed that it will take some time to turn a profit if Malaysia does once again host Formula One. SIC last week claimed that the highly popular Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia (MotoGP Malaysia) provides 6.3 times return on investment for Malaysia based on an economic impact study conducted last year. "It will take time. Even with MotoGP, it took time for us to increase the ROI," said Shafriman. "The important thing is that everyone (stakeholders) comes together. "All this while people view MotoGP and Formula One as SIC's events, when they are actually national events. "We are at the forefront in terms of managing the thing, branding and so on, but essentially they are Malaysian events."

Canada moves to halt strike as hundreds of flights grounded
TORONTO: The Canadian government intervened Saturday to end a strike by Air Canada cabin crew members that saw hundreds of flights cancelled and triggered summer travel chaos for the carrier's 130,000 daily passengers. Canada's largest airline, which flies directly to 180 cities worldwide, had stopped all operations after some 10,000 flight attendants began industrial action fueled by a wage dispute just after midnight on Saturday. Hours later, Canada's labor policy minister, Patty Hajdu, moved to invoke a legal provision that would halt the strike and force both sides into binding arbitration. "This is not a decision that I have taken lightly. The potential for immediate negative impact on Canadians and our economy is simply too great," Hajdu told journalists. However, she said it could still take five to 10 days for Air Canada to resume regular services after the disruption. The airline had earlier urged customers not to go to the airport if they have a ticket for Air Canada or its lower-cost subsidiary Air Canada Rouge. It said flights by Air Canada Express, which are operated by a third party, would not be impacted by the walkout. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which is representing the workers, said its members would remain on strike until the government formally issues an order that they return to work. "Please remember there is only a referral, we are still in a legal position to strike and will continue to do so, we must show the company we are in control of this," the union's Air Canada branch wrote on Facebook. In a separate statement, CUPE slammed the Canadian government's intervention as "rewarding Air Canada's refusal to negotiate fairly by giving them exactly what they wanted." "This sets a terrible precedent," it added. "This will only ensure that the unresolved issues will continue to worsen by kicking them down the road." In addition to wage increases, the union says it wants to address uncompensated ground work, including during the boarding process. Rafael Gomez, who heads the University of Toronto's Center for Industrial Relations, told AFP it is "common practice, even around the world" to compensate flight attendants based on time spent in the air. He said the union had built an effective communication campaign around the issue, creating a public perception of unfairness. An average passenger, not familiar with common industry practice, could think, "'I'm waiting to board the plane and there's a flight attendant helping me, but they're technically not being paid for that work,'" he said, speaking before the strike began. "That's a very good issue to highlight," Gomez said, adding that gains made by Air Canada employees could impact other carriers. Air Canada detailed its latest offer in a Thursday statement, specifying that under the terms, a senior flight attendant would on average make CAN$87,000 (US$65,000) by 2027. CUPE has described Air Canada's offers as "below inflation (and) below market value." The union has also rejected requests from the federal government and Air Canada to resolve outstanding issues through independent arbitration. Canada's economy, though showing resilience, has begun feeling the effects of US President Donald Trump's trade war, with his tariffs hitting crucial sectors like auto, aluminum and steel. In a statement issued before the strike began, the Business Council of Canada warned an Air Canada work stoppage could add further pain. "At a time when Canada is dealing with unprecedented pressures on our critical economic supply chains, the disruption of national air passenger travel and cargo transport services would cause immediate and extensive harm to all Canadians," it said.

Market Review: Hong Kong Stocks End Week Up Despite China Data Drag
Hong Kong stocks closed the trading week in the positive territory after a midweek rally, though gains were trimmed on Aug 15 as weaker Chinese economic data revived concerns over growth momentum.
