Drug peddlers will face action, warns NTR District Collector
VIJAYAWADA: NTR District Collector G Lakshmisha and Commissioner of Police SV Rajasekhar Babu on Thursday issued a stern warning to drug peddlers and users, stating that strict action would be taken against anyone found selling or consuming narcotics in the district.
'The law is strict and no one will be spared,' they said, while addressing participants of a mega walkathon organised from Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The event, organised by the NTR District Police Department, aimed to raise awareness about the drug menace and promote a drug-free district, state, and country. Thousands of students, officials from various departments, and members of NGOs took part in the walkathon.
Lakshmisha declared that NTR district stands united in the fight against drugs. 'Drugs will destroy the individual, the family, and eventually harm the entire society,' he said. He added, 'We are appointing Eagle Clubs and campus ambassadors for this initiative.'
Commissioner Rajasekhar Babu said, 'The government is taking an iron-fist approach against drugs and is implementing the NDPS Act. We have already booked five individuals under this Act.'

Puttaparthi: On International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a walkathon rally was held in Puttaparthi on Thursday under the aegis of the district administration. District Collector TS Chetan emphasized the importance of building a drug-free Sri Sathya Sai district and urged youth to distinguish between right and wrong and to stay away from drugs menace. He called on students and youth to remain alert and not fall prey to bad habits or peer pressure. He highlighted the devastating effects of drug addiction on families and individuals, pointing out that many young lives are being ruined, and families are facing financial and emotional breakdowns. So far, the government has been taking stringent steps to control drug abuse for the past year. He urged students, parents, and the public to stay informed and report any drug-related activity in villages, mandals, or towns to the toll-free number 1972, assuring that all information will be kept confidential. He informed that the government has also set up an Eagle Task Force to monitor and crack down on drug-related activities continuously. District SP V Ratna reiterated the importance of staying away from drugs and warned youth not to destroy their families by falling into addiction. She encouraged the public to report any information related to drug use, sale, or transport via the toll-free number 1972 and highlighted the role of the Eagle Task Force in monitoring these cases vigilantly. Puttaparthi MLA Pallle Sindhura Reddy stressed the importance of making the right choices and steering clear of dangerous substances. 'Today's children are tomorrow's responsible citizens of India,' she said, urging them to stay away from drugs from this very day.

Gangster's mother shot dead in Punjab, another's nephew killed in Delhi in separate hits
Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother and another person accompanying her were reportedly shot dead by unidentified people on a bike in Batala, Punjab, police said. Harjit Kaur sustained critical injuries during the incident that happened around 9:30 pm on Thursday and was transferred to a hospital in Amritsar, news agency PTI reported. She died later from her bullet injuries, the report quoted a police official from Batala as saying. The incident toom place on Qadian Road, in the Civil Lines area. "Unidentified bike-borne persons opened fire when Harjit Kaur and another person Karanvir Singh were in the car," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Batala, Paramveer Singh told PTI. Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, was earlier elected as a member of village panchayat. In March, jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was detained under the PIT-NDPS Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. Bhagwanpuria was already in the custody of Punjab Police in the 2022 Sidhu Moosewala murder case. Besides, he faces several other cases. In a seperate incidint, a 43-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants while his daughter was injured in outer-north Delhi's Bawana area on Friday morning, an official said. The victim, identified as Dipak, is said to be the nephew of gangster Manjit Mahal. Accoridng to the Hindustan Times, the incident took place when he was on a morning walk with his daughter. 'One person, named Dipak, age 43, has died in a shooting incident in Bawana. Unknown persons had fired upon him,' Delhi Police officials said. Dipak sustained multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot. Dipak's daughter was with him at the time of the incident and sustained an injury to her hand. She is out of danger. "His daughter received a gunshot wound on her hand during the attack. She was immediately taken to a hospital and is stated to be out of danger," the officer said. A case has been registered and teams have been formed to identify and nab the attackers. The motive behind the shooting is yet to be ascertained, police said. However, the Delhi Police said the victim is the nephew of notorious gangster Manjit Mahal. 'He [Dipak] has no criminal background. The police suspect an angle of gang war in this incident. Two accused came on a motorbike and fired several rounds,' police said. They added seven to eight wounds are visible on Deepak's body, but only after the post-mortem report will it be known how many bullets were fired.

Stay away from drugs for a bright future
Tirupati: Youth can make their lives sweeter by focussing on studies, or can make it bitter by getting addicted to drugs, district SP Harshavardhan Raju suggested the students while addressing an awareness meeting at SV Medical College on Thursday, on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He said police alone can't wipe out the evil of drug abuse and needs the support of everyone in the society to end the menace for the better future of the youth. Instead of keeping away drug addicts and look at them with contempt, people should be compassionate towards them and should find out the reason for drug abuse, he suggested. He further said that family members also should approach drug addicts with love and affection to get them out of the addiction. Teachers also on their part must keep a watch on students to notice any abnormal behaviour and alert parents. Stating that drug usage starts as fun in the beginning but later it shatters their life, and in many cases youth turn to drugs due to failure in studies, the SP appealed to people to stop looking at drug addicts as criminals and show a humane approach that would go a long way in bailing them out of drug addiction. The district police intensified enforcement against drug sales and abuses. Drone cameras were also introduced to identify the shadow zones where drug supply and sales are going on and also desolated places, where drug abuse is more. Later in the evening, an awareness rally from RDO office to MR Palli Dandi circle was held with students of various colleges participating holding placards and banners. District Collector Dr S Venkateswar, MLA Arani Srinivasulu and others also participated in the rally. In Chittoor, International Day of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on Thursday. Marking the occasion, a meeting and rally was held. District Collector Sumit Kumar and SP Manikanta Chandolu, who participated in the meeting, stressed on concerted efforts to check drug abuse. Expressing concern on more and more youth falling prey to drug abuse, they emphasised on creating awareness among youth to remain away from drug abuse.
