Man charged as part of investigation into organised crime and child exploitation

STV News7 days ago
A man has been charged as part of a police operation into the exploitation of vulnerable children by organised criminals.
Officers working as part of Operation Dynos, tackling retail crime, arrested a 22-year-old man in Hamilton on July 17.
Police believe that vulnerable young people are being targeted by organised criminals to steal alcohol from stores across the West of Scotland.
The stolen goods are then resold, with profits being used to purchase drugs and fund further criminal activity within the region.
Operation Dynos received £3m in funding from the Scottish Government for 2025 and 2026 amid a concerning rise in retail crime.
The man was due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on July 18.
Detective inspector Vicki Douglas, who leads Operation Dynos, said: 'Retail crime is not victimless and in fact, what we've seen are some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities being actively recruited and indoctrinated into the theft and resale of goods from stores in the region by organised criminals for their financial gain.
'We are committed to tackling retail crime, while at the same time safeguarding young people from harm and coercion into criminal behaviour.
'Operation Dynos will continue to gather evidence and utilise all resources at our disposal to bring these individuals to justice.
'Meanwhile, our colleagues within the Retail Crime Taskforce will work alongside retailers to help enhance security measures and ensure all aspects of crime prevention are considered.'

Concerns growing for hillwalker missing in Scottish mountains

Concerns are growing for a hillwalker who did not return from a walk in the Scottish mountains on Saturday. Richard Dawson was reported missing after he failed to return from a planned walk of the Five Sisters of Kintail. Police confirmed the 61-year-old's car has been found in Glen Shiel, and he has not arrived at his booked hotel accommodation. He is described as 6ft 1ins, of athletic build, with short brown hair, a goatee beard and wears glasses. He had a dark coloured rucksack and usually wears a baseball cap or a straw hat. Inspector Graham Brown said: 'Richard's car has been found in Glen Shiel and our enquiries so far suggest he intended walking the Five Sisters range. He had booked hotel accommodation but did not arrive. 'Concerns are growing for his welfare and extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace him including assistance from mountain rescue. 'We are asking anyone who may have seen Richard to get in touch. Also, if anyone spoke to him and he mentioned his plans then let us know.' Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1036 of Wednesday, 16 July, 2025. PROTESTS against US president Donald Trump have started in Aberdeen with Scottish Greens MSPs in attendance. Demonstrators have gathered in Union Terrace Gardens with various placards, including several pointing out his previous friendship with disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. "We say 'no' to the genocide in Palestine, and we say 'no' any politician who says that their politics has to be built on hate, has to be built on division, and has to be built on enriching the billionaires while the majority of the rest of the world starve', Chapman said. 'Not in our name. Never in our name. That is why we are here today.' Trump arrived at Prestwick Airport on Friday evening before heading to the Turnberry estate in South Ayrshire. He is expected to visit his Menie estate before opening a new course dedicated to his mother, Mary Anne Macleod, who was raised on the Isle of Lewis. Elsewhere, protests have started in Edinburgh outside of the US Consulate. Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie and MSP Ross Greer are set to attend the demonstration in the capital, after the party issued fresh calls for Trump's finances to be investigated by the Scottish Government through an Unexplained Wealth Order.
