The 20 best things to do in Hamburg

Hamburg has always been a popular weekend destination for visitors from all over the continent, especially the Dutch and Danes, for whom it's only a train ride away. Yet it's never overrun with tourists, and even its busiest attractions are rarely beset by queues. Fine art and classical music are among the biggest draws, but it's not all highbrow: families come to tour the city's waterways; couples come to see a show or go shopping for designer clothes. 'The pearl of the north' (as Hamburgers call their hometown) isn't merely a place for sightseeing – it's what Germans call a 'treffpunkt' – a cool place to hang out. All our recommendations below have been hand selected and tested by our resident destination expert to help you discover the best things to do in Hamburg. Find out more below, or for more Hamburg inspiration, see our guides to the city's best hotels, restaurants, and bars and nightlife. Find things to do by type: Best for arts and culture Best for boat trips Best for families Best free things to do Best museums Best for shopping Best for arts and culture Krayenkamp The street that survived the firestorms Hamburg's Altstadt (Old Town) was once an attractive cluster of narrow alleys, but most of it was swept away in the firestorms of the Second World War. This is one of the few surviving streets. Beautifully preserved, it's a window to a lost world. Come here to buy tea and coffee, then fill your boots at Krameramtsstuben, a delightful old-fashioned restaurant serving hearty Germanic grub. Insider tip: Hidden down this narrow alley is one of the city's most charming museums. Hamburg's Kramer-Witwen-Wohnung (the Kramer Widows' Home) – a cosy and evocative museum of social history. Chilehaus Hamburg's modernist marvel If you're a fan of early modern architecture, a walk around the monumental Kontorhaus district is fascinating. It's a Unesco World Heritage site and gives you a good idea of the creative verve of German architects between the wars. The kingpin is the Chilehaus building, the front resembling an ocean liner, but the surrounding buildings are equally imposing. Insider tip: The Speicherstadt Museum arranges tours of the key sites. It also holds tea tastings (Hamburgers take their tea very seriously).
