GOF seizes six protected species of birds in raid on shop

RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized six birds of the 'Murai Batu' (White-rumped Shama) and 'Dendang Selayang' (Black-naped Oriole) species in a raid at a shop in Kampung Bukit Tandak, here, yesterday.
GOF Southeast Brigade GOF Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the birds were seized during Op Taring Wawasan carried out at noon.
"During the raid, the GOF personnel discovered 22,000 sticks of white cigarettes hidden in a toilet of the premises.
"Upon further inspection outside the premises, they found five 'Murai Batu' birds and one 'Dendang Selayang', both protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
"A 44-year-old local man, believed to be the caretaker of the premises, was detained. The birds as well as the cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country, were seized," he said today.
Ros Azhan said the estimated total seizure value was RM56,000.
"The case has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of Pasir Mas district police station and the state Wildlife department for further action," he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(e) of the Customs Act 1967 and Schedules (1) and (2) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

'The GOF, assisted by the Perak Inland Revenue Board, the Batu Gajah Municipal Council, and the Perak Department of Environment (DOE), arrested a local male who is in his 40s, along with the seized items at a factory that processes copper dust and raw materials into copper scrap, which is suspected to be for export,' he said in a statement. He added that intelligence gathered over the past month found that the activity had been ongoing for about a year, and inspections revealed that the factory was operating without any approval from the DOE. He said the case is being investigated under Section 34A and Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and the Perak DOE also took action by issuing a stop-work order under Section 38(1)(a) of Act 127. 'The case is also being investigated under Section 113(2) of the Income Tax Act 1967, which pertains to making incorrect declarations to eliminate or reduce income for oneself or others. Or providing any false information regarding any matter that affects one's own or another's tax liability,' he said. He stated that if convicted, the penalty will be 45 percent of the tax evaded. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Over RM8.5mil worth of copper materials and machinery were seized, and a local man was arrested during the Ops Hazard enforcement operations in Simpang Pulai. Ulu Kinta, General Operations Force (GOF) Northern Brigade Commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said in a statement on Friday (Aug 1) that the factory was suspected of processing materials intended for export overseas. 'Intelligence units gathered over a month revealed that the illegal activity had been continuing for more than a year. Inspections showed that the factory had been operating without any approval from the Environment Department,' he said. The Northern Brigade Intelligence Branch of the General Operations Force, with support from the Inland Revenue Board of Perak, Batu Gajah Municipal Council, and the Perak Environment Department, took part in the operation from 7.00am to 8.00pm on Friday. According to Shahrum, the case was being investigated under Section 34A and Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. 'GOF is actively conducting monitoring and patrols around Perak, Penang, and Kedah to curb illegal activities. The brigade remains committed and consistent in enforcement efforts and will not compromise in upholding the law,' he added. He has urged the public to be the eyes and ears of the authorities by reporting illegal activities to the relevant enforcement agencies.

PASIR MAS: The General Operations Force (GOF) has seized 14 goats and 190kg of ketum leaves, with a combined estimated value of over RM18,000, in two separate operations carried out here and in Tanah Merah. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said two local men were arrested in connection with the possession of the livestock and the ketum leaves. He said both seizures were made under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan, which took place on Monday and last night. In the first operation, members of the 7th Battalion spotted a suspicious vehicle at Chabang Empat Tendong in Pasir Mas at around 7pm yesterday. "Upon inspection, GOF personnel found 14 goats cramped in the rear of the vehicle. "The 41-year-old driver failed to produce any documentation for the animals, which are believed to have been intended for sale on the local market. The estimated value of the seizure is RM10,500," he said. The case has been referred to the Kelantan Veterinary Department for further action under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. In a separate case, Ros Azhan said GOF personnel discovered several packages of ketum leaves in a vehicle. "The car was stopped as it passed through Kampung Bechah Butir Nangka in Tanah Merah at around 9am on Monday. Inside, the personnel found 19 black plastic packages containing 190kg of ketum leaves. The driver was also detained. "The seizure, valued at about RM7,600, has been handed over to the Tanah Merah Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.
