Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and current Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas are among the favourites to drive for Cadillac next season, but they are far from the only drivers in the mix.
The American outfit, backed by 1978 F1 world champion Michael Andretti, has been linked with several other drivers.
Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon confirmed to the High Performance podcast that Schumacher is one of the contenders to drive to the team.
'Yeah, we are talking to Mick,' Lowdon said.
'Yes, I know Valtteri really well,' he added about 10-time race winner Bottas.
'I think they (Schumacher and Bottas) have both proved a whole bunch of things,' Lowdon explained.
'Everyone wants to prove something else again. I never look at that as the biggest motivator. Our team is not there as a vehicle for someone to prove a point.
'Our team is there to provide a position on the pitch, if you like, for someone to prove what they can do for sure. But it's not a vehicle to kind of show the world to prove a point or whatever.
'Drivers are there to prove the best they possibly can for the team and they should be motivated for the team around them as well. I'm less keen on people who kind of want to prove a personal point.'
Perez and Bottas loom as the most likely driver pairing for Cadillac, who are not expected to challenge for race wins in their first season.
'Yes, we are talking (to Perez),' confirmed Lowdon.
'Mick is great,' Lowdon told Sky Deutschland. 'He's a very nice guy, I like him a lot. I've got to know him better now.
'He's still young, but he already has Formula 1 experience. Of course, that was a while ago, but he's kept himself up to date.
'He is no stranger to the team. He knows where we stand. There are some positive things to say about Mick.
'He is clearly one of the drivers on the list. But, I should also say that the list is quite long.'
Schumacher has support from an unlikely source in Guenther Steiner, who was critical of the German during their time together at Haas, where Steiner was team principal.
'I think Mick has a good chance,' the former F1 team boss told RTL.
'Cadillac needs a driver with experience in Formula 1 and there are currently not many drivers who don't have a job but have already driven Formula 1.
'When he was a test driver at Mercedes, he didn't race, but he learned a lot about a good big team.
'This knowledge of how a successful team works could help Cadillac.
'I don't think they'll take an American driver because the risk is just too great,' he added. 'The guys have no experience in Formula 1 and then it can quickly backfire. That doesn't help anyone.
'Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu. All of them have experience in Formula 1. With Mick Schumacher, these are my four favourites.'
'Discussions are ongoing,' Schumacher told Motorsport.com Brazil.
'The communication has been very positive so far.
'They've already hired a fantastic number of people,' he added. 'It's an honour to be part of it, to negotiate with them, and a great position to be in.'
Schumacher, 26, served as Mercedes' reserve driver in 2024 but has branched out in the World Endurance Championship and raced in Le Mans this year.
Lowdon also name checked other names including former F2 champion Felipe Drugovich and Red Bull academy driver Arvin Lindblad as some younger drivers in the mix if Cadillac picked a younger driver to develop.
'There are a bunch of young (drivers),' he said.
'There are some really good F2 drivers, Felipe Drugovich, Fred Vesti. The list kind of goes on.
'Arvid (Lindblad) is a really good guy. He has done a good job. He has Red Bull (as his backer).
Indy Car driver Colton Herta is the main American name mentioned as a potential option if Cadillac wants a local to drive for the team
'In Colton's case, it's the superlicence that's the issue, but he can certainly drive a race car,' said Lowdon.
Bottas' former Sauber teammate Guanyu Zhou, who is managed by Lowdon, is another name that's been floated.
The F1 season continues this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix as Oscar Piastri looks to claim his sixth win of the season.

Piastri reigns in Belgium to extend world title lead
Oscar Piastri has taken a major step towards a first world championship title by defying wet conditions at the Spa-Francochamps track to win a rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix. Heading home McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who had started on pole, means Australian driver Piastri's lead has jumped from nine to 16 points. It also halted his English rival's gathering momentum - Norris had won the previous two races to slash Piastri's overall lead to single figures. The decisive moment came early once the race got underway, Piastri passing Norris on the first racaing lap to power on to finish 3.415 seconds clear of his arch-rival. Norris reduced Piastri's lead toward the end of the race but the Australian held on with worn tires and Norris could not get close enough to challenge. "I knew Lap 1 (after the safety car) would probably be my best chance of winning the race. I got a good exit out of Turn 1, lifted as little as I dared and yeah, we had it mostly under control," Piastri said after his eighth Formula One career win and sixth of this season. Piastri had been disappointed to qualify second for the race behind Norris, but it "turns out starting second at Spa is not so bad after all," he said. The world title initiative has suddenly swung back to Piastri, who heads to Hungary for next Sunday's engagement knowing he won his first race in Budapest last season. Norris remarked: "Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Oscar deserved it, I'll review my things but still happy for the team, another 1-2 and our first 1-2 here for many, many years." The race had been red-flagged after an initial formation lap due to standing water and heavy spray affecting visibility. That resulted in a delay of an hour and 20 minutes as officials waited for conditions at the notoriously weather-prone circuit to improve. Charles Leclerc was a distant third for Ferrari as dominant champions McLaren celebrated their sixth one-two finish in 13 races and the third in a row. Titleholder Max Verstappen, in his first full race under a new Red Bull chief following the departure of Christian Horner, finished fourth. George Russell, of Mercedes, who crossed the line first in Spa last year but was disqualified due to his car being underweight, was fifth this time and Williams' Alex Albon came home sixth. Red flag out as downpour delays Belgian Grand Prix
The start of the Belgian Grand Prix has been delayed by rain and poor visibility at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit after a formation lap behind the safety car ended with the red flag being waved. Australia's Oscar Piastri, who leads the world championship, was second on the grid, behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris. An FIA spokesperson said: "Most drivers have reported poor visibility during the formation lap, hence the red flag." Drivers returned to wait in their team garages. With more rain expected, there was no immediate announcement of a new start time. Norris was asked to report on the conditions. He said: "They are not ideal. I can't see a lot behind the safety car so I can't imagine what it is like for everyone else." The FIA did not immediately ssue any update as to when the 13th round of the season would get under way. The rain delay comes four years after a weather-induced debacle at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. Persistent rain meant it was cut to just two laps under safety car conditions. The shortest race in F1 history had no competitive action and angered fans who had waited hours in the rain for it to start. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen took aim at the decision to suspend the start of the race. "That's a bit silly," said Verstappen on the radio. "We should just run, like chillax. Jesus. "They're way too cautious. And now the rain is coming, the heavy rain. It's going to be a three-hour delay."

Belgian GP qualifying, Norris takes swipe at doubters after taking pole from Piastri, rookie in tears
Lando Norris said he had not lost any confidence in his ability to outpace McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after he bounced back on Saturday to claim pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Briton, who was beaten by series leader Piastri in Friday's sprint qualifying, said it was tough for both McLaren drivers as they battle for supremacy in their intra-team rivalry — and slug it out for the drivers' world championship. Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Defending four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull is third on 173 after two Grand Prix wins. Norris, who is chasing a third consecutive Grand Prix win on Sunday to overhaul the 24-year-old Australian, admitted he was aware that 'everyone was worried' after Friday when he was three-tenths slower. 'I wasn't that far off, but there were a couple of little issues and everyone was pretty worried,' he said. 'But I was confident after yesterday and I was confident coming into today so it's nice to see that I could get back to the top.' Asked where his improvement came from, he said: 'Three-tenths is just slipstream and not being the first out of the pit-lane. 'It was nothing to worry about, but people like to make a lot of things up. 'I felt good and the car has been flying all weekend.' Norris has been accused of mental fragility and being over-sensitive to his own high expectations and media criticism. He said that it was intense and challenging for both McLaren drivers to maintain a strong relationship as teammates while fighting for the drivers' title. 'Oscar has been doing a good job all weekend and we've been pushing each other a lot,' said Norris. 'It's tough because you see where your strengths and weaknesses are clearly — and then you learn from each other quickly. It's good, but it's a tough battle that we have at the minute.' Piastri agreed that maintaining a balanced approach was difficult. 'We're a good teammate pairing and we learn a lot from each other each weekend. That's what makes us a good team, but it also makes it difficult to fight each other.' Norris said he wanted Sunday's race to be run in dry conditions, despite forecast heavy rain for the Ardennes. 'I prefer it to stay dry honestly. For the fans! I think it's rained here for the last 10 years or something so it would be nice to have a dry Sunday.' It's a blow to Piastri given overtaking has proven increasingly difficult in F1 this season, and it will take something special for him to pass Norris in the race. Piastri set the track record for the fastest ever lap at Spa in sprint qualifying, but couldn't quite match that pace in qualifying for the main race. He was overtaken by Verstappen, who won the Sprint race before qualifying. Belgian Grand Prix starting grid 1st row: Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri 2nd row: Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen 3rd row: Alex Albon, George Russell 4th row. Yuki Tsunoda, Isack Hadjar 5th row: Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto 6th row: Esteban Ocon, Ollie Bearman 7th row: Pierre Gasly, Nico Hulkenberg 8th row: Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton 9th row: Franco Colapinto, Kimi Antonelli
