
AI drives growth for a few Chinese companies. Analysts share their picks
Spending on artificial intelligence helped give some Chinese tech companies a boost in the first quarter, despite economic headwinds. "The standout for this [first quarter] reporting season was the growth in cloud business for Alibaba and Baidu ," said Brian Tycangco, an analyst at Stansberry Research. Alibaba said earlier this month its cloud revenue in the latest quarter rose by 18% year on year , while Baidu on Wednesday said its AI cloud business grew by 42% . "At these rates of growth, cloud business is poised to become the 2nd largest business segment for both companies," Tycangco said. "More importantly, cloud will become the basis for a return to heady growth days after several years of single-digit topline growth." Alibaba, Tencent and JD.com also reported double-digit growth in marketing revenue, which they said were bolstered by AI tools that were able to target consumers more effectively. The trend signals a fundamental change in Chinese markets. "AI/Tech/New Economy [are] further gaining traction as equity market leaders," Morgan Stanley's chief China equity strategist Laura Wang said in a May 20 note. "We believe that a new generation of equity market leaders is forming in these sectors, after a 5-year-long disruption period post market peak in early 2021," she said, noting how consumer and internet stocks previously led gains. Out of Morgan Stanley's 60 Chinese AI stock picks, those rated overweight, traded in Hong Kong and with expected upside of more than 50% as of May 19 are: Gushengtang — This health-care company is focused on traditional Chinese medicine, and it's training targeted AI models to create an "AI physician assistant." The company said customer visits rose by 12.7% in the first quarter to 1.21 million. Bairong — This cloud-based AI services company is focused on state-owned banks and other financial services companies. The company added in its 2024 annual report that Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall e-commerce platforms use Bairong's AI model service to evaluate consumers' purchasing power. When it comes to more popular names, the Morgan Stanley analysts prefer Alibaba and Tencent over Baidu and iFlytek. They also prefer Meituan, Meitu and Trip.com over Kuaishou and JD.com. Among mainland China-listed companies, 68% mentioned AI in their 2024 annual reports, up from 43% in the first half of 2024, HSBC Qianhai Securities head of research Steven Sun, said in a May 16 report. 'We also observed a slightly upward revision of 2025e consensus capex for major cloud service providers after 1Q25 results, suggesting they are still upbeat about their AI business.' The information technology sector saw earnings rise by 24.7% in the first quarter from a year ago on improving AI penetration, the HSBC report said, noting it was one of the fastest-growing sectors. One of HSBC's buy-rated picks is enterprise software and cybersecurity company Sangfor, listed in Shenzhen, with a price target of 143 yuan. The firm thinks accelerating AI adoption can help drive earnings growth. Chinese-developed DeepSeek surprised global investors in late January with its ability to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT, while claiming a fraction of development cost. In the months since, several Chinese companies have also released new AI tools for generating video or 3D models. China's recent tech breakthroughs stem from the country's breadth of engineers, data and vast social media and e-commerce ecosystem, the Morgan Stanley analysts said, noting how government support can enable faster tech adoption. "We continue to believe that such structural improvement would be less susceptible to the ongoing tariff dispute and the overall macro challenges," the report said. 'This is important in attracting foreign investors to build long-term commitments of allocation, as they discover a decent number of companies that are distinctive and exclusively available in China, despite the broad macro slowdown.' Listed Chinese stocks generate the majority of their revenue domestically, with only 3% U.S. revenue exposure, the analysts said. — CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

That policy shift by tweet came late Friday after markets shut, so there was some anticipation of an impact today, maybe a drop in the Canadian dollar given the scale of their steel exports to the U.S. Yet the loonie is actually firmer against a broadly softer greenback, while European share futures are off a shade and Wall St futures only modestly lower. This could be the TACO meme in action as investors assume 'Trump always chickens out', though he's leaving it late with the new higher tariff supposed to go into effect on Wednesday. Then again, last minute cliffhangers work well on reality TV. European Union negotiators weren't pleased with this latest plot twist and threatened retaliation in return, while also letting it be known that the court case decision against the April 2 tariffs gave them added "leverage". Neither does Trump's latest rhetorical attack on China seem to be working, with Beijing sticking to its guns. If Trump is counting on a call from China's President Xi Jinping to sort things out, he might be waiting by the phone for a while. It was also somewhat ironic hearing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent complaining that China was holding back vital products from the United States, given it was the U.S. that started a trade war with the specific aim of rebuffing Chinese imports. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller speaking in South Korea said tariffs meant there were downside risks to activity and unemployment, and upside risks to inflation. Yet he was still optimistic about the chance of "good news" interest rate cuts later this year, cementing his place as one of the more dovish Fed officials. Fed Chair Jerome Powell will speak later Monday, though limited to opening remarks to an international finance conference. Unlike many of its peers, particularly Walmart, Home Depot is less reliant on imports, with over 50% of its products sourced domestically. The company has been actively reducing its dependency on any single country since the early days of the Trump administration. This strategic positioning could allow Home Depot to gain market share, especially if tariff-driven price disparities widen. While some interpret Home Depot's decision to hold prices as a form of virtue signaling or political calculation, possibly aimed at avoiding friction with former President Trump, such speculation remains unconfirmed. What is clear, however, is that Home Depot's lower tariff exposure provides it with a competitive advantage in the current trade environment. Home Depot remains particularly exposed to pressures in the housing market, as a significant portion of its business comes from professionals such as contractors, builders, and plumbers. On its most recent earnings call, the company acknowledged that elevated interest rates are prompting many homeowners to delay major renovation projects. The broader housing landscape isn't offering much relief either—30-year mortgage rates remain above 7%, and home sales have slowed to their weakest pace since 2009. These high rates are creating a 'lock-in effect,' where homeowners are reluctant to trade up and give up lower mortgage rates, ultimately reducing housing turnover and shifting demand toward smaller, DIY-style projects. Despite these headwinds, Home Depot is well-positioned for a rebound when housing activity improves, which many experts expect to occur by 2026. Home Depot's valuation is admittedly high. Its Price to Earnings (P/E) ratio of 24.6 trades at a 50%-plus premium to the sector median. This suggests that Home Depot will have to not only reach, but beat expectations to keep its premium valuation. Home Depot's decision to hold prices steady while competitors raise theirs highlights a key strategic advantage—one rooted in strong supply chain diversification and smart market positioning. This approach could ultimately serve as a textbook example of how to navigate retail challenges during economic downturns. Additionally, Home Depot's recent investments in its pro services segment are likely to pay off once the housing market begins to recover. That said, the current economic uncertainty may linger longer than hoped, meaning it could take time before these strengths are fully reflected in the company's financial performance. For that reason, Home Depot is best viewed through a long-term lens. Despite its premium valuation, I believe HD remains a strong hold until macro conditions improve. ‘Keep on Buying,' Says Morgan Stanley About Tesla Stock
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock is back in focus as Elon Musk shifts gears, stepping away from political headlines and returning his attention to the company that made him a household name. Confident Investing Starts Here: The move was no doubt greeted enthusiastically by Tesla investors, who have grown frustrated with Musk's high-profile distractions since becoming Trump's 'first buddy.' But beyond the optics, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, a longtime Tesla bull, believes there's more at stake, pointing to broader strategic implications tied to Musk's renewed commitment. 'In our view,' Jonas noted, 'Tesla's expertise in manufacturing, data collection, robotics/ physical AI, energy, supply chain and infrastructure are more critical than ever before to put the US on an even footing with China in embodied AI.' Jonas points to China's rapid progress in humanoid robotics – what he calls the 'Humanoid Olympics.' After showcasing robots running a half marathon and competing in combat sports, China is now moving toward full-on humanoid games. 'China's gamification of robotic innovation is accelerating its path to AI supremacy,' says Jonas, who wonders if the US should fight back with a 'Humanoid Ninja Warrior.' The specter of Chinese EV maker BYD looms large too. The company announced significant price reductions across its entire lineup recently – ranging from 10% to nearly 30%. Notably, the price of its budget-friendly Seagull model was slashed to just RMB 55,800 (under $8,000). 'If you want evidence of the 'race to the bottom' in global EV prices, look no further,' says Jonas. The analyst also wonders if Musk might be having a change of heart regarding one possible business venture. For years, he has dismissed the idea of Tesla building eVTOLs or drones, pointing to concerns like noise, privacy issues, public nuisance, and inadequate battery energy density. However, during a recent all-hands meeting, when asked about the possibility of making a plane, Musk paused before replying that the company is currently 'stretched pretty thin.' 'In our opinion,' says Jonas, 'that's a decidedly different type of answer. Is Tesla an aviation/defense-tech company in auto/consumer clothing?' As for the upcoming Cybercab launch, slated for June 12, as with most highly anticipated Tesla events, Jonas thinks it's best to keep a lid on expectations. That said, he'll be watching closely for ongoing updates in the following days and weeks – particularly regarding network performance and growth metrics like vehicle count, mileage, and trip volume. All in all, Jonas remains on TSLA's side, assigning an Overweight (i.e., Buy) rating with a $410 price target, implying potential upside of 18% from current levels.
