'This group has serious heart' - All-Ireland joy for Tyrone

BBC News3 days ago
Tyrone boss Darren McCann praised his side's "heart and determination" in Sunday's All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate final victory over Laois. The Red Hands captured their first title since 2018 with a 2-16 to 1-13 victory at Croke Park Aoife Horisk and substitute Katie Rose Muldoon scored goals in either half to help the Red Hands avenge last year's agonising one-point decider defeat by Leitrim, much to McCann's delight."On the sideline, we felt totally in control," he said. "We were creating chances but we just weren't taking them, which was frustrating for us."When we play relaxed football, we are a hard team to stop and we played relaxed football, especially in the second half."The whole group have serious heart and determination as a collective and that was a collective performance. I was really happy with their performance today and the key thing was getting on top and staying on top."
But while Tyrone toasted an immensely satisfying triumph, Antrim were left disappointed after being edged out by Louth in the Junior decider. The Saffrons started strongly, scoring an early goal, but Louth fought back to eventually win 0-13 to 1-8 and deny the Ulster county their fourth title at the grade - and first since 2022.For joint manager Chris Scullion, it was a case of Antrim not taking their chances in the second half. "It just didn't fall our way today. It seemed to be mistake after mistake sometimes and we were constantly trying to regroup the girls to go again, go again," said Scullion, who leads the team alongside Michael Devlin."It maybe took a toll on them, but I'm not taking anything away from Louth. Louth were brilliant today. They set up defensively, kept their same structure and they were able to break out and it caused us problems. "They were able to work the ball around and get their scores. Fair play to them."

Over €300,000 raised for teen who lost legs in farming accident days before her 13th birthday

An appeal which was launched to raise funds for a girl who had to undergo a double leg amputation after a farming accident occurred just days before her 13th birthday has raised in excess of €300,000. Garnish GAA in west Cork set up a GoFundMe page in late July to pay for the medical expenses of Féile O'Sullivan. Advertisement Féile was hospitalised after she suffered serious injuries in an accident in the Beara area earlier this summer. The organisers of the fundraising drive said that the accident changed the life of Féile 'in ways no child should ever have to face". 'In a moment, her world was turned upside down — she has suffered severe lower abdomen injuries and undergone a double leg amputation. "Anyone lucky enough to know Féile will tell you how full of life, energy, fun, kindness and what a pure messer she is. She adores dogs and horses. Advertisement "Farming is in her blood, and she loves everything about nature, outdoors and staying active. "She's also a true sports star — whether football, soccer, gymnastics, or anything involving movement and fun, Féile is always giving it her all, with a smile and a sparkle in her eyes. This accident hasn't changed who she is, but has just changed what she now needs.' Monies raised will be given to the O'Sullivan family to pay for her medical care. Féile will require additional surgery and intensive rehabiliation, specialist care, physio therapy, emotional support and home adaptations. The youngster remains in hospital. The organisers are grateful for the outpouring of support for Féile who they describe as being 'a true warrior.' Donations can be made to the appeal here .

McAree wants Swifts to push for Europe again

Dungannon Swifts manager Rodney McAree says qualifying for Europe again must be "the challenge" for his side ahead of the new Irish Premiership campaign. During an impressive 2024-25 season, the Swifts won the Irish Cup for the first time to qualify for Europe and finished fourth in the league. However, they became the second team to exit the Uefa Conference League qualifiers after being defeated 3-1 on aggregate by FC Vaduz despite winning the away leg though that defeat put to an end to the Swifts' first European run in over a decade, McAree is hoping his side "can have another go" soon."If we can show the grit, determination and desire that we have shown in our European games in the league then we will hopefully be all right," McAree told BBC Sport NI."It would be nice to experience this again and that has to be the challenge. If we can win the Irish Cup or be fortunate in the league, then we can have another go at it."Despite all focus now going to the league campaign, and Sunday's season-opener against champions Linfield, McAree said his players did "the league proud" during their European adventure. "I am disappointed that we are going out, but I am proud of everyone," McAree continued."The boys have done themselves and their families proud and I think we have done the league proud as well."It is disappointing for our league that we don't have three teams going through but it is great to see Larne and Linfield fly the flag and we have given it a good go."

Powys ace McPhee shines for Wales at cricket championship

DYLAN McPhee has shared his pride after helping Wales to a second place finish at the International Masters Cricket Championship. Also known as the Triple Crown of Cricket, the tournament was held in the shadow of the William Wallace statue in Stirling and featured some of the best over 40s players in the world. The Builth Wells allrounder was joined in the Welsh squad by former Llanidloes bowler Simon Jones who now plays his cricket for Shropshire Premier League club Shelton. Wales had a tough start to the tournament with defeat against the English but tasted success in their next two games against Scotland and Ireland. England proved too strong with Wales defeated by eight wickets with 28 overs to spare. McPhee revived Wales' tournament in their second match. Wales were chasing just 141 against Scotland when they were reduced to 113-8. Up stepped McPhee to hit the winning runs as Wales edged a tense one wicket win. Wales signed off the tournament with an emphatic seven wicket win over Ireland who were defending 180 before Wales replied with 183-8. McPhee said: 'I bowled very well all week but had great opening spell against Ireland with 9-3-18-3. 'To finish second was very pleasing and a great effort as Scotland and Ireland are strong. 'England are extremely good and a very strong team but another great experience shared with other teams and family.'
