Netflix to Invest $1B in Mexico Over Four Years, Put $2M Into Churubusco Studios

Yahoo20-02-2025

Netflix has committed to invest $1 billion in Mexico for the production of series and films over the next four years, meaning from 2025 through 2028, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said during a press conference with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday.
'This investment, and the productions derived therefrom, will benefit Mexican production companies and will contribute to the growth of the local audiovisual industry and the creation of opportunities nationwide,' the streaming giant said.

Netflix will also invest $2 million in Mexico City's iconic Churubusco Studios, one of the oldest and largest production facilities in Mexico, to 'elevate' its facilities. And Netflix will continue creating and funding programs that help develop diverse and creative talents behind the camera, so that they may develop their careers in the entertainment industry. In August last year, a fund worth more than $1 million was unveiled in Mexico to be used in 2024 and 2025 for this purpose.
The global streamer has a long history in Mexico. In September 2011, Netflix became available in the country. In 2015, the company produced its first series outside the U.S. in Mexico, namely Club de Cuervos.
In 2019, Netflix opened its first offices in Mexico and then decided in 2020 to set up its Latin American headquarters there. 'Over the past six years, Netflix's local employee base has increased more than tenfold, from 30 employees to nearly 400,' according to the streamer.
'This country holds a special place in Netflix's own history,' Sarandos said during Thursday's press conference, referencing Club de Cuervos. 'We created it in Mexico for Mexico — and it paved the way for our programming strategy, which is all about local production.'He continued: 'A few years later, a film called Roma, which was made here, won the Oscar for best (international) feature – it was a first for Netflix and for Mexico. In fact, it won three Academy Awards on that night. We were also proud to produce Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Bardo, which was the Mexican submission for the Oscars in 2022. And a year after that, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio won for best animated feature — which was another first for both Netflix and Mexico.'Concluded Sarandos: 'Over the years, we've worked with Mexican creators on hundreds of other series and films that have captured the hearts of Mexican audiences — from The House of Flowers to Where the Track Ends, to the recently announced Love Sick and The Dead Girls. And we can't wait for you to see a new documentary on the life and art of Juan Gabriel, which is coming soon. All of this helps explain why in 2020, when President Sheinbaum was the mayor of Mexico City, we decided to establish our Latin American headquarters here.'

Mexican President Sheinbaum seeking meeting with Trump at G7

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she hopes to have a pull-aside conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump when the two North American leaders travel to Alberta next week for the G7 summit. Her trip north comes as both Canada and Mexico grapple with Trump's persistent tariffs and economic threats, which have also stressed the Canada-Mexico relationship; Ontario Premier Doug Ford has suggested Canada go it alone with the U.S. on trade. Mexico is not part of the G7, but other leaders are often invited for discussions around the global leader summit. Last month, Sheinbaum confirmed she was invited but wasn't sure if she'd attend. "I have decided that I will attend the G7," Sheinbaum said in a statement Monday. "The foreign affairs minister is working on setting up bilateral meetings — it is likely that we will have one with Trump." Prime Minister Mark Carney's office has signalled he is hoping to reach a deal around tariffs and trade around the G7 meetings, taking place in Kananaskis, Alta., from June 15 to 17. The prime minister has also said he wants to make progress on bilateral issues with the U.S. before talks take place on the trilateral Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). A review of that deal is officially slated to start in 2026, although Mexican officials have suggested they expect a review to start earlier than that.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 9 (UPI) -- Netflix released a trailer for Tyler Perry's Madea's Destination Wedding, marking the writer, director and actor's 13th cinematic outing as the iconic matriarch. The film, which debuts July 11, is Perry's second Madea film to be released in creative partnership with Netflix. The 13th installment in the film franchise sees Perry's Madea traveling to the Bahamas with her family to celebrate the surprise wedding of her nephew's daughter, Tiffany (Diamond White), to a rapper she met on a yacht. "It's been 20 years now since Diary of a Mad Black Woman came out," Perry told Netflix. "To see that this character is still enduring, and people are still watching and enjoying and laughing, it's really mind-blowing to me." Perry, who plays multiple roles in the film, said returning to Madea is a form of comfort. "I keep coming back because some of this is just escapism," he said. "Just let's leave the world behind for a moment and come to Madea's house, and have some good food and laugh, and cry and celebrate and be all of those things." Tyler Perry's Madea's Destination Wedding also stars Cassi Davis Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Taja V. Simpson, Jermaine Harris and Xavier Smalls.
