KOTA SAMARAHAN (Aug 15): Civil servants here should believe in their abilities, strive to become the best versions of themselves, and perform their duties with integrity and sincerity.
Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang made this call when officiating at the 'Samarahan Division Integrity Festival 2025' at Dewan Pertubuhan Peladang Negeri Sarawak here today.
'I believe that through the organisation of this festival and continuous efforts to instil integrity, we can build a strong, principled, and corruption-free community,' he said in his speech.
'I also hope that everyone, especially civil servants, will have faith in their own abilities, be the best versions of themselves, and carry out every task to the highest standard, with full integrity and sincerity.
'May all our efforts be blessed by Him, Insha Allah (God-willing).'
Quoting Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's recent speech at the Borneo International Integrity Summit, Mohamad Irwan highlighted that efficient, transparent, and corruption-free governance was a vital prerequisite for sustainable development and public trust in institutions.
He also conveyed the message of State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who reminded civil servants to show determination and commitment to upholding integrity — a cornerstone to the Sarawak government's aspirations.
'All civil servants are urged to fulfil the trust given to them with full integrity, in line with our goal of achieving a high-income Sarawak by 2030,' he said.
This year's festival, themed 'Corruption-Free Zone', was held in collaboration with the Sarawak Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (Unions), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), and the Association of Certified Integrity Officers (ACeIO).
The event featured a 'Corruption-Free Pledge' ceremony and a motivational sharing by well-known Malaysian personality and Sarawak native, Amin Idris. civil servants integrity kota samarahan

Rallies continue in Sabah to demand justice for Zara

The crowd at Lintasan Deasoka demanding justice for Zara. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 16): Rallies across Sabah continued to be held in remembrance of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. On Saturday evening, one such rally took place at Lintasan Deasoka here, with around 500 people in attendance despite continuous rain. Participants stood under umbrellas as they chanted support for Zara and her family, while others held placards demanding that schools be made safe spaces for all. Police guarded the perimeter to safeguard against any untoward incidents. Jaya speaking at the gathering. According to organiser Jaya Kumar, 47, from the Indian Civil Servant Retirees Organisation, the gathering was to demand justice for Zara and highlight the rising number of bullying incidents. Jaya said if it wasn't for the rakyat's voices, the case might have already been closed, expressing dismay over a recent report that an investigating officer in the case failed to follow Standard Operating Procedures. 'This issue does not involve race or religion, it involves the loss of a child's life. I have children. How can I trust to send them to school with the situation now? Strict action must be taken by the authorities, parents and schools over this bullying issue. I hope that not just in Sabah, but the whole Malaysia, we do not see a second Zara,' he said. Rajandran addressing the rally. Meanwhile, Dato Seri Rajandran, 66, said to be from the Kedah Royal Family Association, suggested that schools place a complaint box for reporting bullying incidents. He explained that such boxes would give both students and staff a safe channel to report problems or daily incidents without fear of reprisal. 'With these boxes, we can receive daily updates on what is happening in schools and detect incidents early. I came here not to complain to any party, but to fight for justice as Malaysians. A Malaysian's blood was spilled — let us try to prevent another,' he said.

Anwar says up to RM5b recovered from corruption cases as govt steps up reforms

IPOH, 16 August — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that the government has recovered up to RM5 billion in assets and funds seized from corruption cases over the past year alone. He said the seizures were from various government ministries and departments, such as Immigration and Customs, as well as from politicians. 'Some people mock or criticise the anti-corruption drive. But let me tell you, over the past year alone, we have recovered between RM4 billion and RM5 billion in assets and funds. 'That shows the seriousness of our efforts to clean up governance. All of this, however, can only be achieved with good governance,' he said in his speech during the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ipoh Sentral Development Project located opposite the Ipoh Railway Station here. The prime minister said Malaysia cannot advance in dignity and status if it continues to follow outdated practices such as rewarding high commissions and or offering additional building floors in exchange for major projects. 'This must be stopped. Regulations must be clear across all sectors,' he said. Referring to the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said its foundation lies in strengthening growth and ensuring inclusivity. 'When we say 'raise the ceiling', it means the economy must expand. Growth must be faster, investments stronger, agriculture developed, all sectors strengthened. 'But when the ceiling rises, the floor must also rise, meaning people's livelihoods must improve. Salaries must go up,' he said. Anwar reiterated that the government has allocated an additional RM10 billion this year and RM18 billion next year to reform the public service under the Public Service Remuneration Scheme. He said such measures were taken to ensure basic needs were met. 'Because we cannot expect police officers, for example, to work long hours while their housing remains neglected. Tiny houses built 50 or 60 years ago. These things must change. That's what raising the floor means,' he said. On wages, he said the government has been making gradual increases as a 'step-up', adding that government-linked companies have already set a higher floor of RM3,100. 'Is RM1,700 enough? No, but we increased it gradually,' he said.

Logistics sector is nation's backbone, says Loke

PORT KLANG: It is crucial for everyone to join forces to uphold the nation's logistics sector, which is the backbone of the economy, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. "Without the logistics sector, trade cannot take place and the economy will be crippled as imports and exports can't be carried out," he said in his short speech at the Kibarkan Jalur Gemilang Komuniti Pelabuhan Klang event in conjunction with National Day on Aug 31 held at the Port Klang Authority Social and Recreational club. Loke said it is the mission of the logistics industry community to ensure Port Klang, currently one of the top ten busiest ports globally, continues to grow and prosper the nation's economy. He said the Port Klang community will continue to enjoy the economic benefits from the various developmental projects initiated there. "Currently, we are planning to ensure the development of Carey Island as the third port can be implemented soon," he said. On a separate matter, Loke said the recent incidents where the Jalur Gemilang was flown upside down must not make people lose focus of the fact that the Jalur Gemilang belongs to the people. Loke said that the flag is also the unifying symbol for all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. "Although there have been several recent incidents involving the Jalur Gemilang, we must not lose sight of the fact that the Jalur Gemilang is our common flag. "National Day should unite Malaysians and remind us that love for the country must be part of our character and daily lives," said Loke. Recently, two incidents of the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down courted controversy with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh initiating a protest over the matter. The Malaysian flag was first accidentally flown upside down at a primary school in Port Dickson and then at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang.
