Soviet-era probe plunges into Indian Ocean after 53 years in orbit
The Russian space agency Roscosmos said the spacecraft, known as Kosmos 482, entered the atmosphere at 0624 GMT before hitting the waters west of Jakarta, Indonesia.
No information was provided on potential damage or debris.
The European Space Agency also concluded that re-entry had likely occurred. Between 1961 and 1983, the Soviet Union sent several probes to Venus as part of the Verena programme to explore the planet. While several succeeded in landing on the planet's surface and transmitting data back to Earth, Kosmos 482 went astray shortly after lift-off.
Kosmos 482 was launched on March 31, 1972, and was scheduled to make a controlled landing on Venus. However, due to a failure of the launch vehicle, the capsule failed to escape the Earth's gravity and has been orbiting the planet for 53 years. (DPA)

Swiss nuclear power plant completely shut down due to hot weather
GenevacTypeface:> The more than 50-year-old Swiss nuclear power plant Beznau, located near the German border, has shut down its second reactor due to the high temperatures. The shutdown has nothing to do with the safety of the reactors but is related to environmental regulations, the operator said on Thursday. The operator, Axpo, must adhere to limits on the water temperatures in the river Aare. The plant draws water from the river to cool the reactors and later returns it warmer than before. If the Aare is already very warm due to the outside temperatures, additional warm water cannot be discharged. This is intended to protect the flora and fauna of the Aare, Axpo stated. South of the nuclear power plant, the water temperature was 24.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday evening, according to the Federal Office for the Environment. (DPA)

First Indian, Hungarian and Polish astronauts arrive at the ISS
New YORK: For the first time an Indian, a Hungarian and a Pole have arrived at the International Space Station (ISS). A Crew Dragon capsule carrying the three astronauts and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson docked at the ISS on Thursday at 1031 GMT, according to the US space agency NASA. The capsule had been launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by Elon Musk's space company SpaceX just under 30 hours earlier. The Ax-4 mission had been postponed several times due to technical problems with the rocket and the ISS. This is the fourth commercial space mission for Houston-based Axiom Space, in collaboration with the US space agency NASA and SpaceX. While Whitson has been in space several times, this is the first space flight for the three amateur astronauts. (DPA)

SpaceX's Starship explodes on test stand while preparing for launch
Berlin: A SpaceX Starship rocket exploded while preparing for its 10th test flight in Texas late on Wednesday, media reports said, as images of a dramatic fireball emerged. Starship 'experienced a major anomaly' while preparing for the test, SpaceX, which is headed by Elon Musk, posted on X. All personnel were safe and accounted for, the company said. 'Our Starbase team is actively working to safe the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials. There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue,' it said. Starship - the largest rocket system ever built - was first tested in April 2023, when it exploded after a few minutes. Later tests saw the upper stage reach space and land under control in the Indian Ocean. But since then, a number of tests have failed. (DPA)
