Breaking new ground in Tamil storytelling: from YouTube Originals to TV serials

The Hindu6 days ago
With OTT platforms opening doors for new genres of storytelling, YouTube Originals is shaping a fresh era of Tamil content with bold themes, relatable stories rooted in everyday life, and homegrown talent.
In line with many production houses in other languages, Radaan Mediaworks India Limited, a prominent production house in south India, has stepped into a new media platform and is creating YouTube Originals. Led by actor and Radaan Mediaworks managing director and chairperson Radhikaa Sarathkumar, the production house will release its next venture, Taj Mahal, on August 1 at 6 p.m.
With increasing mobile viewership, direct access to global audiences, and monetisation tools like advertisements, production houses like Radaan are creating original content with storylines tailored for the new-age audience. The web series, Taj Mahal, will be premiered directly on Radaan Mediaworks' YouTube channel, which has nearly 18.2 lakh subscribers.
The teaser released recently offers a glimpse into the tale of love woven with layered emotions. Ansari, who has helmed the web series, hinted that the story revolves around an interfaith couple, who move to an unfamiliar city seeking a fresh start, and their struggles to survive.
The cast includes Kumaran, Siragadikka Aasai serial fame Sangeetha Leonis, and many social media influencers. Veteran newsreader Nijanthan has also played a key role. 'This is my third series with Radaan, which always set benchmarks in storytelling. The previous romantic series, Kadhalum Katru Mara, clocked nearly 11 lakh views. Taj Mahal is an emotional drama set against both rural and urban backdrops and has unexpected twists,' said Mr. Ansari.
The key advantages of YouTube Originals are its direct access to audience, instant feedback from viewers through comments, and sharing content that is freely accessible, he said.
'We have planned 10 episodes, and each one is 23-25 minutes long. We are also planning to edit episodes and release it as a movie in two parts,' said Mr. Ansari.
Unlike traditional serial formats, these projects aim to explore diverse narratives and give opportunities to emerging talents to create stories that connect with viewers. With budget constraints often limiting the scale of production, local marketers must step in to support content creators of YouTube Originals, Mr. Ansari added. While Jaya K. Doss has composed music for the web series, Pavel Nalini Natarajan has worked as the cinematographer.
A compelling daily soap
With a fresh wave of engaging storylines and strong relatable protagonists, Tamil television continues to raise the bar for daily entertainment to keep loyal serial fans hooked. The latest to join the league of compelling daily soaps is Chinnanchiru Kiliye, a Zee Tamil serial that is already striking a chord with viewers for its emotional depth and a strong female lead.
The serial targets to break stereotypes with a powerful narrative that highlights the struggles and aspirations of relatable characters and offers many unexpected twists. Actor Swathika plays the role of Indhu, a strong-willed woman who juggles multiple jobs to support her family. From tutoring schoolchildren to delivering milk packets and working as a bike taxi driver, Indhu takes on every challenge. Her two-wheeler, which she calls Bharathy, is her trusted companion.
Amidst her daily hustle, Indhu dreams of becoming a teacher. However, her life takes a turn when she marries Karnaa. Actor Naresh plays the role of this fierce man with a mysterious past.
As Indhu embarks on a new phase of her life, she finds herself at odds with the rigid expectations of her husband's patriarchal household. The story unfolds as she treads the fine line between preserving her identity and adapting to a world that demands conformity.
Actor Madhumitha, popularly known as 'Jangiri' Madhumitha, and actor Abitha, recognised for her role in Tamil movie Sethu and popular TV serial Thirumathi Selvam, Gayathri, and Rowthiram Syed have also been roped in to play key roles in the serial. The serial is aired at 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Stephen A Smith blasts Michelle Obama over ESPN drama jab and offensive Donald Trump claim

Stephen A Smith blasts Michelle Obama over ESPN drama jab and offensive Trump claim (Image Via X) On August 2 and 3, 2025, a heated exchange unfolded between ESPN star Stephen A. Smith and former First Lady Michelle Obama . The clash began when Michelle Obama, on her 'IMO' podcast, compared ESPN comment shows especially featuring Stephen A. Smith to The Real Housewives of Atlanta. In response, Stephen A. Smith pushed back sharply on his YouTube show, calling her 2024 campaign remarks 'offensive' and saying he took them personally. What followed is a clash of perspectives blending sports, politics and media culture. Michelle Obama's ESPN comparison draws fire On August 1, 2025, during an episode of her 'IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson' podcast, Michelle Obama likened watching ESPN even shows like First Take to reality TV. She said: 'If I listen to ESPN for an hour, it's like watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta. It's the same drama… they're yelling at each other… Stephen A. Smith… he's just like every other talk show host.' She described the network's debates as sociological drama, full of constant tension and conflict. Smith's response to Michelle Obama On August 2–3, 2025, Stephen A. Smith answered on his own show. He began by expressing respect: 'Michelle Obama… you are revered by me personally… but I'm still a bit salty at you.' He criticised her campaign claim that 'a vote for Trump was a vote against women,' stating he found that message emotionally manipulative and offensive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mountain Gear for Extreme Conditions Trek Kit India Learn More Undo He emphasised that voters decide based on many issues like economy, security, immigration, safety, long before considering identity politics. Smith also challenged her reality‑TV comparison of ESPN. He argued that sports commentary is live, competitive, authentic entertainment and not scripted reality TV. 'You are so wrong about that assertion,' he said, defending ESPN's value. Despite disagreement, Smith lauded her: he said Obama was 'sensational' and suggested she or Barack Obama would beat Donald Trump in a presidential run. Yet he reaffirmed that he 'won't say a negative word' about her personally. This dispute highlights the intersection of sports media criticism and political tension. With Michelle Obama's viral podcast comments and Stephen A. Smith's candid rebuttal, both delivered on different platforms and dates, the back‑and‑forth reflects deep cultural divides over identity, political messaging, and media presentation. Expectations were high from the remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, and the film managed to open to mostly positive reviews. Dhadak 2 box office collection day 3: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in a still from the film. Dhadak 2 box office update The latest update on Sacnilk states that Dhadak 2 collected ₹ 3.77 crore on its third day of release. The film had collected ₹ 3.5 crore on its opening day, and showed little growth on its second day of release, collecting ₹ 3.75 crore. The overall collection now stands at ₹ 11.02 crore. Dhadak 2 is facing stiff competition at the box office from several releases—Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2, the animation film Mahavatar Narsimha, Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda's Saiyaara, and Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom. Saiyaara, now in its third week of release, collected more than Dhadak 2 on Sunday, with ₹8 crore. Saiyaara has now crossed the ₹300 crore mark in India and emerged as a blockbuster. About Dhadak 2 Dhadak 2 tells the tale of a law student who falls for his classmate, only for her family to harass him due to caste differences. Talking about the film's sensitive message, Triptii told PTI, 'It should reach the maximum audience because it's entertaining and also leaves a little note, so that is something which we are constantly looking for. We found that equilibrium... There is something real and sensitive about it ('Dhadak 2'). All of these guys have more responsibility, and they are very well aware of that. That's why they have been very quiet about everything, like while we were shooting for the film, even the censor board issues, we never spoke about anything.'

Tamannaah Bhatia finally breaks silence over dating Virat Kohli and Abdul Razzaq, reveals stunning truth, says...

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been in the headlines for a while now. The actress has an impressive career, having performed in multiple languages — be it Hindi, Telugu, or Tamil, she has won hearts everywhere. Recently, Tamannaah got candid during a chat show, The Lallantop, and finally, after much anticipation, opened up about the persistent rumors romantically linking her to two cricket stars — Virat Kohli and Abdul Razzaq. Tamannaah Bhatia Opens Up About Dating Rumors With Virat Kohli and Abdul Razzaq Setting the record straight regarding the rumors of her dating cricketer Virat Kohli, Tamannaah Bhatia said, 'I feel so bad because I literally met him for only one day.' She further added, 'I have never met Virat after the shoot. Na maine unse baat ki, na unse mili hoon.' The story about Tamannaah's dating rumors with Virat goes back to 2010, when a picture of the duo from a commercial shoot went viral, sparking relentless speculation about the two being together. Adding to the buzz, another wild internet rumor suggested that she had secretly tied the knot with former Pakistani cricketer Abdul Razzaq, sparked by a photo of them browsing jewelry together. 'Mazaak mazaak mein Abdul Razzaq! The internet is a fun place,' she chuckled. 'Yaa, according to the internet, I was briefly married to Abdul Razzaq.' Turning towards the camera, she folded her hands and said, 'I'm sorry sir, aapke do-teen bachhe hain… I don't know what your life is!' Calling it 'so embarrassing,' Tamannaah clarified that the viral photo was simply from the inauguration of a jewelry store they both happened to attend by coincidence. Talking about disadvantages of fame, Tamannaah admitted, 'It's very awkward. Jab koi bhi taalluq nahi hota hai aur log bana dete hain. But there is nothing you can do. Waqt lagta hai, you come to accept that aap iske baare mein kuch kar nahi sakte. Jisko jaisa sochna hai, wo waisa hi sochega. Aap sabko baith ke control nahi kar sakte.'
