Mets' Juan Soto forced out of Padres game with painful injury
The New York Mets have a big series against the San Diego Padres leading into the MLB trade deadline. They already added Gregory Soto, a key piece to their bullpen. But a key player suffered an injury on Tuesday that could change the entire season. Mets superstar outfielder Juan Soto left Tuesday's game with a foot contusion injury, per the team.
'Juan Soto was removed from tonight's game with a foot contusion,' the team's official account announced.
Soto fouled a 0-2 pitch off his foot during an at-bat in the fourth inning. He finished the at-bat, grounding out, and was removed before the bottom of the inning. Tyrone Taylor came in to play center field, bumping Jeff McNeil to right field. Then, Starling Marte pinch-hit for Taylor, pushing McNeil back to center.
Despite Soto not making the All-Star Game, the first year of the Mets' experiment has been sensational. He has 25 homers already, leads the majors with 84 walks, and has a team-high .875 OPS. The largest contract in North American sports history is hard to live up to, but Soto has done that so far.
The Mets should be pushing to add pitching at the MLB trade deadline. Sean Manaea is finally back at full strength, but Griffin Canning is out for the year. Clay Holmes has never been a starter, making it tough to trust him late in the season. With so few pitchers available and many teams in need, Steve Cohen should be pushing all of the buttons to land a starter.
If Soto is hurt, that only increases their need for a pitcher. Even if he is in the lineup on Wednesday, the Mets need a pitcher before Thursday. All Mets fans hold their breath as they await an announcement on Soto's foot. Meanwhile, the team plays an important game in San Diego.

"Still, all of these teams are probably at least a season away from competing for a playoff spot, and they'd love to add another top pick first." As this relates to the Nets, this statement rings true in the sense that Brooklyn does not yet have a player on the roster that is currently considered to be an All-Star at some point in their career. The Nets will enter the 2025-26 season as one of the youngest teams in the league due to the amount of youth on the roster, but the hope is that guard Egor Demin, who was taken eighth overall by Brooklyn, can realize his potential sooner rather than later. As of this writing, BetMGM gives the Nets an over/under of 20.5 wins over the course of the 2025-26 regular season, meaning that the Las Vegas betting market could be expecting another tough season for Brooklyn. With the 2026 NBA Draft expected to boast premium talent such as AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson, the Nets could be best served to keep the future in the forefront of their mind.

The drop in performance likely caused interested teams to drop their price for the right-hander when the deadline came around, despite Alcantara rebounding slightly after the All-Star break. The Yankees were reportedly in the running for Alcantara as well as Edward Cabrera at this season's deadline but were unwilling to move two of their top five prospects to land a frontline starter at the deadline. Lombard Jr. is the team's top prospect and is not expected to arrive in the Bronx until 2027. Given shortstop Anthony Volpe's struggles this season, the Yankees likely want to keep Lombard Jr. around to take over at shortstop when he is ready. Jones was once one of the best two-way prospects but is now primarily playing outfield and is crushing at the minor league level this season.
