TPCC president Mahesh calls for unity among backward classes
HYDERABAD: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Saturday said the time has come for the Backward Classes (BCs) to unite and assert their collective strength.
He underscored the need for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to rise above party considerations.
The PCC president, who is also an MLC, participated, along with BJP MP Eatala Rajender and others, in a function organised to mark the release of the book 'OBC Porubata', written by IAS officer Narahari Parikipandla and advocate Pruthviraj Singh, at Suravaram Pratapa Reddy Telugu University here.
Mahesh Kumar Goud stated that the Centre's decision to conduct a caste census stands as a major achievement for the Congress, adding that Telangana has emerged as a model for the country through its implementation of the caste-based survey. He praised Rahul Gandhi for championing the concept of the caste census to ensure social justice.
Historically, he said, OBCs were seen merely as instruments for vote-bank politics, but today, they have progressed to the stage where they are demanding their rightful share in the political space.

New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) Soon after the government issued a notification declaring the 16th Caste Census to begin from 2027, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday accused the opposition Congress party of always cheating and suppressing the rights of OBCs. "The OBC community has always been betrayed by the Congress. If the Congress had genuine intent, it would have formed a new commission after scrapping the Kaka Kalelkar Commission... Instead, they dismissed the commission's report and continued to rule... 'Later, when the Mandal Commission was constituted and the Supreme Court upheld its legality, the Congress worked to weaken the OBC Commission,' Union Minister Bhupender Yadav said at a press conference here. While slamming the Opposition party for "suppressing OBC rights and caste census reports", Minister Yadav gave credit to his party for taking various initiatives for the community including granting constitutional status to the OBC Commission and implementing welfare schemes. He said, "It was the BJP government that granted reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Congress has never stood with the poor, OBCs, or SC/ST communities. Congress MP & LoP Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, calls Karnataka an ideal state — but the timing and internal contradictions of their stance show that social justice is merely a showpiece for Congress, not a genuine commitment. Misleading the OBC community has been Congress's policy; delivering justice to them has never been their intent..." Rather, he said, Congress always worked towards weakening the OBC Commission and delaying the implementation of the Mandal Commission report. "We thank our PM for addressing the long-standing issue of reservations in admissions to central schools... Through his economic welfare schemes, crores of people have been lifted out of poverty," said the senior BJP leader. He also pointed out loopholes on the proposed census survey announced by the Congress-led Karnataka Government a few days ago, alleging that the Congress is using 'social justice for electoral engineering rather than genuine commitment.' In response to a reporter's question about the Congress party's demand to adopt the Telangana model for the census to gather socio-economic data of all castes, Yadav took a jab at the Opposition, remarking, 'If that's the case, then why are they not implementing the Telangana model in Karnataka, where they are in power?'

CHENNAI: Even as the war over coalition government in 2026 is on between the supporters of the AIADMK and the BJP on social media, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday said the state will see a coalition government after the 2026 Assembly elections and his party will be part of it. 'In 2026, there will be a coalition government in which the PMK will be a partner. The PMK is not here to make any party the ruling party in Tamil Nadu. We should also rule. Only when we are a part (in that government), will we be able to establish social justice,' Anbumani said while addressing the general council meeting of the party's undivided Tiruvallur district unit. In this regard, he recalled that in 2004 his party was a partner in the UPA-I government at the centre, and it was the PMK that made the demand to implement 27% reservation for OBCs in education in central government educational institutions a part of the Common Minimum Programme. Anbumani said when the promise was not implemented two years after the formation of the government by the UPA, the PMK founder (S Ramadoss) said that the party may walk out of the alliance if the promise was not honoured. Only then was the assurance fulfilled by the UPA. Later, addressing a similar meeting in Chengalpattu district, Anbumani said, 'Why am I underscoring coalition government? Despite the two parties ruling (DMK and AIADMK), social justice could not be established in the state, and we can only do so when we are part of the government.' Anbumani also attacked the DMK government on various counts. While charging that law and order has been deteriorating in the state, he said there is no safety for women in Tamil Nadu.

This growing divergence over the upcoming "socio-economic and educational survey" comes days after CM Siddaramaiah's seemingly reluctant acceptance of what he said was the Congress brass's call rather than his government's. Some OBC representatives have been urging the state government to implement the recommendations of the original caste survey report, submitted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes last year. Data collated by the Kantharaj Commission is said to favour OBCs, especially communities like the Kurubas that were classified under a separate 1-B category with 12% reservation. The report also proposes doubling the reservation for Muslims from 4% to 8%, which some still deem insufficient. "Govt claims the survey must be conducted once every 10 years, but that is irrelevant since the Kantharaj report was never implemented," he said. "Our demand is to implement its recommendations. We will meet on June 20 to decide the modalities for our agitation." In contrast, the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, both of which had opposed the Kantharaj report, are planning an outreach and an online survey, respectively, to "complement" the survey. B Kenchappa Gowda, president of Vokkaligara Sangha, confirmed his community's plan. Sources said the official notification for the survey could be issued next Thursday, coinciding with Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi's birthday. Rahul, who presided over the meeting in Delhi last week where the Congress brass asked Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar to prepare for re-enumeration, is a proponent of "social justice through caste-based surveys".
