DOGE IRS Cuts Make No Sense

DOGE may be an acronym for the Department of Government Efficiency, but it is far from efficient in its plans to cut up to 25% of the IRS staff which include significant cuts to the staff of the IRS Criminal Investigations unit.
The Criminal Investigation unit of the IRS plays an essential role in combating drug and human trafficking, terrorism, tax crimes, financial crimes and money laundering.
Through the Criminal Investigation Unit's Asset and Investigative Service, it seizes assets used by criminal enterprises and then sends those forfeited funds to the Treasury Forfeiture Fund which returns funds to crime victims, reimburses law enforcement agencies for expenses incurred in conducting criminal investigations as well as share forfeited funds with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
According to its annual report, in 2024 the IRS-CI initiated more than 2,667 criminal investigations, obtaining 1,571 convictions representing a 90% conviction rate. It uncovered more than $9.1 billion in fraud from tax and financial crimes, obtained court orders totaling $1.7 billion in restitution to the IRS and seized criminal assets totaling approximately $1.2 billion far exceeding the cost of its budget.
In addition, in the Fall of 2024 the IRS-CI increased its efforts against wealthy tax cheats with actions against 1,600 taxpayers earning more than a million dollars a year which by July of 2024 had already brought in $1 billion in collections.
According to a study at the University of Michigan the top .5% of the highest earning Americans account for about a fifth of the income that is hidden from the IRS estimated to be more than $50 billion. Efforts by DOGE to reduce the CI's efforts to collect taxes owed by the very wealthy appear to be extremely shortsighted.
IRS-CI has also played a major part in criminal actions against drug cartels, which are a major focus of the present administration which makes DOGE's efforts to reduce their staff all the more confusing.
As noted in a letter from Senators Ron Wyden, Chuck Schumer and seven Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee:
'IRS Criminal Investigation is at the forefront of federal law enforcement efforts to investigate fentanyl trafficking by cartels, human trafficking, terrorism financing, and sanctions evasion. For example, CI was the lead investigative agency in the largest international fentanyl/opioid seizure in U.S. history. This operation took down a massive drug trafficking operation and seized 864 kg of drugs, including an astounding 64kg of fentanyl and fentanyl-laced opioids, enough to kill thousands of people. CI was also responsible for the dismantling of several large fentanyl trafficking networks operated by the Sinaloa cartel, including a collaboration with Chinese money laundering organizations. An indefinite hiring freeze at CI would endanger both public safety and national security by directly hampering multi-agency efforts to pursue and dismantle thee highly dangerous criminal networks.'
Cutting staff and funding from an efficient government agency that returns far more than it costs makes no sense and leaves the country more vulnerable to criminal enterprises and encourages tax cheating.

Obituary: Milwaukee Courier founder Jerrel Jones, pioneer in local journalism, dies at 85

Milwaukee journalism pioneer and visionary, Jerrel Jones, 85, founder of the weekly newspaper, the Milwaukee Courier and owner of WNOV radio station, has died according to a statement from the family. 'He was a mentor, a pioneer, and a beacon of strength,' Mary Ellen Jones, daughter and general manager of WNOV, said in a statement. Jones led Courier Communications Corp., which included the newspaper for 61 years. The Courier was founded in 1964 during the Civil Rights movement and desegregation in Milwaukee's schools. In 1972, Courier Communications bought WNOV, with Jones as the majority stakeholder, making it the first Black owned radio station in Wisconsin and one of 30 in the United States, according to the station's website. In 2013, Courier Communications bought the Madison Times, a Black newspaper in Madison. In a statement Mayor Cavalier Johnson said: "Milwaukee has lost a titan of local media with the passing of Jerrel W. Jones. His leadership of both the Milwaukee Courier newspaper and WNOV radio provided important outlets for news, entertainment and information. Jerrel was an engaged owner and community leader. His family, friends and colleagues have my condolences." A special tribute edition of the Milwaukee Courier is planned for the end of July and community members are invited to share a reflection of Jones. The Courier is the oldest continuously publishing Black newspaper in Wisconsin and has been a force in politics, culture and community since its first edition. Jones gave it the slogan "the newspaper you can trust" and it was a key source of information and commentary for Milwaukee's Black community. And Jones held politicians to account, even those whose campaigns he helped support financially. One of those was Democratic state Sen. Gary George, who represented part of the northside of Milwaukee at the time. In 2003, Jones supported then-Gov. Jim Doyle's efforts to expand casino gambling in the state that would have benefited Potawatomi Casino, and one of the major advertisers for the Courier and major employer in the Black community. However George voted against it. Jones was furious after the vote and the Courier wrote an editorial lambasting George saying he "has had the opportunity to represent his loyal supporters for a long time. It is time that he must go. His actions, votes and leadership are clearly in question." Jones went even further, launching a recall against George in March that year. "I backed Gary for 20 years. I've taken a lot of crap from Gary over those 20 years," Jones said in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2003. "I've never even heard of a recall effort where we recall our own. this is the first time and, hopefully, the last time." Jones led the recall effort gathering 15,000 signatures, nearly more than double what was needed to launch a recall and a month before the deadline, according to a Journal Sentinel story. Roughly seven months later George lost his recall election to Spencer Coggs. This story will be updated. Musk's Tech Banker Grimes Sells SpaceX, Anduril for Trump Role

Michael Grimes, the veteran technology investment banker who helped Elon Musk buy Twitter in 2022, reported assets worth as much as $98 million in a financial disclosure as part of his new role at the Commerce Department. Grimes reported nearly $67 million of income, stock and accrued vacation payout from Morgan Stanley, where he worked for roughly 30 years as a managing director and a co-head of global technology investment banking. That total includes the $56 million he realized from selling restricted stock units that vested after he left in February. Grimes no longer owns shares in the company, according to his disclosure.
