Gayton on son's PSL club purchase: 'My family has the resources'
The R50 million purchase, via a consortium, took place during a closed bidding process.
Calvin, also a prominent businessman, dropped his father's last name in recent years. He plans to change its name to Siwelele FC and fill the void of the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, which later became Royal AM.
Speaking to eNCA's Percy Young, Gayton McKenzie addressed the contentious issue of his son Calvin Le John's purchase of SuperSport United.
The Minister of Sport insisted that he was not involved in the closed bidding deal.
He said: 'I'm at arm's length. But there are family members who dug into their pockets and got the team, they got SuperSport United.
'But there's no link to me, and there shouldn't be a link.
'My involvement was actively, publicly telling South Africans that I was going to make sure that Siwelele returns to the Free State. It's about to happen.'
Gayton jokingly added: 'As a minister, when I get reshuffled, I will go look for a job there, as a mascot'.
While Gayton McKenzie claims he was not involved in the SuperSport United deal, he does hope that the club will fill a void left by his favourite PSL club, Bloemfontein Celtic.
He continued: 'The only time my family was together, and the only time my father hugged me, was when Celtic scored a goal. It's very emotional for my family. 'He was at the deathbed of my father, and the last thing he spoke about was Celtic.
'We can't sit here when my family has the resources…people in the Free State are suffering. That can never happen'.
Last month, Gayton McKenzie, in his capacity as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, vowed that Bloemfontein Celtic, under its nickname Siwelele, would return to the PSL.
What he did not mention was his son's investment.
He told reporters: 'I'm still meeting the people who will fulfill that promise. Siwelele or Phunya Sele Sele is coming back. I can promise. I can't make promises that I can't keep as a minister. I'm a politician.
He added: 'They are on track, and I trust them absolutely because I know them.'
'I asked them if they were still on track with bringing Celtic back. They said they are 100% on track to bring Celtic back'.
According to Goal.com , Free State businessman Edward Modise owns the naming rights to Bloemfontein Celtic.

Baby Boks triumph over England in thrilling World U20 Championship match
Junior Springbok scrumhalf Haashim Pead feeds one of the scrums against Australia. He was a constant thorn in the flesh of England on Friday night as the Baby Boks beat the defending champions 32-22. The Junior Springboks started slowly in their World Rugby U2O Championship pool match against champions England in Rovigo, Italy on Friday night, before eventually settling into their stride and running out 32-22 winners. The South African youngsters had no answers to an early England onslaught that yielded two tries, the first from fullback Josh Bellamy, who converted his own try, and the second from Connor Treacey (14-0). But SA hit back with a spectacular score from the hot-stepping Cheswell Jooste, who burst through the England defensive line after a set move in midfield, and blew past a number of defenders to score. Jooste was a menace whenever he touched the ball. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo kicked the conversion to make the score 12-7. The Baby Boks were suddenly full of running, with scrumhalf Haashim Pead, who was pulling strings for SA at scrumhalf, starting and finishing an attacking move down the right wing for SA's second try. England were then gifted a try off a South African mistake close to their try line (19-12). More silky touches and pace to burn by the SA backs put fullback Gilermo Mentoe over for the third SA try. Centre Cupido showed great vision and timing in the pass. Moyo landed the conversion to draw SA level (19-19).

Junior Boks beat England at U20 Championship

Picture:The Junior Springboks overturned an early 14-point deficit to claim a bonus-point win against England at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Rovigo on Friday. The 32-22 triumph took South Africa to the top of Pool A with 10 points. England are second on five points, along with third-placed Australia, who beat winless Scotland 34-24 earlier in the day. The final round of pool matches take place on Wednesday, with the Junior Boks up against Scotland (3.30pm SA time) and England taking on Australia (6pm). Both teams came into this match on the back of big opening wins, with South Africa smashing Australia 73-17 and defending champions England hammering Scotland 56-19. But it was England who carried on from where they left off last Sunday, with tries to scrumhalf Jonny Weimann and flanker Connor Treacy giving them a 14-0 lead after 10 minutes. Junior Boks fight back The Junior Boks hit back with a brilliant try from Cheswill Jooste, who ran the perfect angle off his wing to split the defence of England, who had sloppily conceded a scrum after knocking on from a quick penalty tap. Shortly after, another dazzling Jooste run resulted in a try to scrumhalf Hassiem Pead that reduced the deficit to two. England wing Jack Bracken then capitalised on a risky in-field pass from Junior Boks replacement Jaco Williams to score. But Williams made amends by putting fullback Gilermo Mentoe over for a try that flyhalf Vusi Moyo converted to levelled the scores. England took a 22-19 lead into the break after a penalty goal from No 10 Ben Coen, but two from Moyo – the second from 55m – put the Junior Boks in front for the first time. Pead then scored an outstanding individual try from just outside his 22, converted by Moyo, to extend the lead to 10. Centre Gino Cupido was yellow-carded with 10 minutes to go, but the Junior Boks' defence stood firm and they ended the game on England's tryline.
