Gujarat Giants on Tuesday announced Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) star Mohammadreza Shadloui as their captain ahead of the 12th edition of the league, which kicks off on August 29 in Vizag. Giants open their PKL 2025 campaign against U Mumba on August 30 at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Vizag. The team will play 18 league-stage matches this season with their sights set firmly on the title. While naming their captain, Gujarat Giants also unveiled a new jersey in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The unveiling event was attended by head coach Jairvir Sharma, assistant coach Varinder Singh Sandhu and others. This year's PKL auction was a landmark for the Giants, headlined by the signing of Iranian powerhouse Mohammadreza Shadloui for record Rs 2.23 crore, the highest bid of PKL Season 12. A two-time PKL champion, reigning MVP and multiple-time Best Defender, Shadloui brings unmatched defensive firepower and proven leadership credentials. "I am proud to have the opportunity to captain Gujarat Giants in PKL 12. With most of our squad in their early to mid-20s, we are a young, energetic, and dynamic unit. We are excited about the season ahead, and I thank Adani Sportsline and our coaches for trusting me with this responsibility. We will give our best," Shadloui said on his appointment. Meanwhile, head Coach Jairvir Sharma, a veteran with over three decades of elite coaching experience, said that the pre-season camp in Bengaluru has prepared them well. "I feel as excited, and just as nervous as a player, as this will be my first PKL season. Our pre-season camp in Bengaluru has prepared us well and we aim to come back to Ahmedabad with the title after a few months and celebrate with you," said Jairvir. Assistant coach Varinder Singh Sandhu said, "We had an intensive training camp in Bengaluru and are fully prepared for PKL Season 12. This will also be my debut in the league. UoM faces setback in sports funding, participation
Mysuru: The University of Mysore (UoM), already grappling with financial constraints and struggling to provide pensions to its retirees, is now facing a major setback in sustaining its sporting activities. Venkatesh, director of the department of physical education (PE), said that last year, the university had received Rs 60 lakh, which enabled them to send 40 teams — 21 men's and 19 women's — for inter-university competitions. "But this year, the allocation for the PE department is Rs 40 lakh," he said. Though the Syndicate, the university's highest decision-making body, has approved a budget of Rs 40 lakh this year, sources said that in practical terms only about Rs 19 lakh is available for sporting activities. "If the university fails to enhance the budget, many sportspersons wanting to vie for honours in the inter-university competition will be disappointed," they added. Students are particularly worried because, despite the university collecting more than Rs 1 crore from them every year under sports fees, only a meagre portion is being allocated for the sporting activities. "It is unfortunate that from what students have paid, only such a small amount is available," sources rued. With the inter-university season approaching, several students have been putting in extensive practice. They are also anxious about the games that would be played at the inter-university sporting event. According to officials, with only Rs 19 lakh at their disposal, the department estimates that it will be able to send no more than 10 teams (men's and women's teams combined) to the competitions. This marks a sharp decline compared to last year's participation of 40 teams, raising concerns about the university's ability to retain its sporting presence at the national level. Experts fear the cut in funds will affect not only performance, but also the morale of athletes. The department is scheduled to meet with PE directors on Aug 22 to make a final decision on the line-up of sporting events that UoM teams will compete in the inter-university event. Yuvraj Sandhu continues hot streak, leads after opening round
Agency: PTI Hosur (Tamil Nadu), Aug 19 (PTI) Chandigarh's Yuvraj Sandhu, the Order of Merit leader and last week's winner in Mysuru, continued his hot streak with his opening round effort of eight-under 63 that gave him the lead at the Rs 1 crore PGTI Players Championship here on Tuesday. The event is being played at the Clover Greens Golf Course & Resort. The trio consisting of Nepal's Subash Tamang, Delhi's Shaurya Bhattacharya and Hyderabad's Milind Soni shot scores of seven-under 64 at the Par-71 course to occupy tied second position. Mohd Azhar of Hyderabad was placed fifth at 65 while Bengaluru-based teenaged amateur Veer Ganapathy was placed tied sixth at 66. As PGTI made its debut at Clover Greens, most of the professionals were playing their first ever competitive round at the picturesque venue. Sandhu, also making his first visit to Clover Greens, outperformed all the others on day one in overcast, cool and extremely windy conditions as the temperature hovered between 20 to 24 degrees celsius. Sandhu, a three-time winner this season on the PGTI, mastered the tree-lined narrow fairways and the wind by producing three birdies on the back-nine and then adding an eagle and four birdies at the cost of a solitary bogey on the front-nine. The 28-year-old Sandhu's round was highlighted by a 20-feet eagle conversion on the second, a drive that found the Par-4 13th green and two terrific up and downs, one from the hazard and one from the rough, for birdies. Sandhu said, 'I've started really enjoying playing in such gusty conditions, I feel I thrive in these situations. Like I said last week, I've developed my skills of playing in these conditions with all my experience of playing in Asia. 'It's also great to lead in my very first round at a venue, just like last week in Mysuru. Clover Greens is a short track but it has a lot of challenges to offer courtesy its narrow, tree-lined fairways and the pot bunkers. 'Fortunately, I played the Pro-Am couple of days back with the owner of the course Mr. Austin Roach who gave me a good insight into the challenges posed by this course. That was very helpful for me." Subash Tamang, the 2023 All India Amateur champion, mixed eight birdies with a bogey on day one. His accurate approach shots left him six birdie putts within a range of four feet. Shaurya Bhattacharya and Milind Soni, who were both tied second along with Tamang, produced two eagles each during their rounds of 64. Shaurya, a winner this year, chipped-in for his eagle on the 12th and came up with a fabulous second shot from 190 yards to leave himself a tap-in for eagle on the second hole.
