Shannon Sharpe discusses ESPN departure, reveals why he wanted to wait for news to break on specific day
The Pro Football Hall of Famer-turned-national television star was accused of assault, sexual assault, battery and sexual battery. He was also accused of engaging "in the intentional infliction of emotional distress," and his accuser was seeking $50 million in damages.
Sharpe initially called the allegations a "shakedown," and his legal team released sexually explicit messages that the woman had allegedly sent him in efforts to prove their interactions were consensual.
Nonetheless, the woman's attorney, Tony Buzbee, announced earlier this month that the sides "reached a mutually agreed upon resolution," but other details were not revealed. Buzbee represented two dozen of the women who accused Deshaun Watson of sexual assault, and all but one of those cases ended in a settlement.
Sharpe discussed his departure from the network on the most recent edition of his podcast, stating that he understood their decision, but was hoping the news could be released later for a specific reason.
"The only thing that I really asked was, 'guys can we wait until Monday.' My brother [Sterling] is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family.' I said 'this coming out is going to overshadow everything that he's worked his entire life for.' And unfortunately, you know, it didn't happen that way…" Sharpe said.
"I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday because I hate the fact that I'm overshadowing my brother. First two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and this is what the headline's going to be for the next couple days."
Sharpe said that he apologized to his brother earlier in the day, who told him he did not have to do so. However, he did it one more time in a public forum.
"I know you told me I don't have to apologize, but I'm going to do it one final time tonight, and I won't apologize again - I'm sorry that I upstaged you in this manner. That was never my intent. You've been my hero, you've been my role model for as long as I can remember.
"I apologize, and I thank all of my fans for supporting me when I was at ESPN and every place that I've been… Thank you guys for your support."
Sharpe said that he "really enjoyed" his abbreviated stint at ESPN.
"I really enjoyed my time at ESPN. It gave me an opportunity to bring my audience that saw me really just grow. They saw me, you know, 'Lakers in 5' and they saw me say all these funny, these analogies that my grandparents gave me. And I was able to bring that to ESPN, so I'm very, very grateful for that."
Sharpe's attorneys admitted the former tight end had previously offered the woman a settlement of around $10 million, but she declined. Buzbee said that "both sides acknowledge[d] a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship."

2025 Tulsa Football Predictions: Golden Hurricanes Ranked 127th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Tulsa Football Predictions: Golden Hurricanes Ranked 127th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:24 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Tulsa lands in my Ultimate 136. Tulsa ranking: 127 Last year's ranking: 119 ( in Ultimate 134 ) Top player: RB Dominic Richardson: Has appeared in 45 career games between his time at Baylor and Oklahoma State, rushing for 1,767 yards and 16 TDs. [Tulsa's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: All right, this here is my alma mater. This here is my hometown. This here is where I graduated high school. And we suck. I hate it here, bringing up the rear in a race where we're being unmercifully and tauntingly lapped. ADVERTISEMENT Enter 35-year-old Tre Lamb, who flipped Directional State Tennessee — East Tennessee State for the uninitiated (and if I offended you) — from 3-8 to 7-5 after leading Gardner-Webb to FCS playoff bids in 2022 and 2023. He inherits Kirk Francis – a local man who done good – at QB but who has yet to throw touchdowns or complete more than 59% of his passes in a season. Maybe pairing him with former All-World and Tulsa Edison RB Sevion Morrison and Baylor back Dominic Richardson will allow the offense to function with something like a pulse and not like a resident at Oaklawn Cemetery. Four-straight years of being flat out bad at a school that produced four Pro Football Hall of Famers and two first round picks in the last five years is quite enough. Fix it, Tre. Get Tulsa off this train ride to bleak obscurity before it meets its terminus in oblivion. Michigan football aims for CFP despite ESPN's No. 5 Big Ten ranking
Expectations for Michigan football aren't incredibly high on a national level, but you would never know it if you were inside Schembechler Hall. Yes, the Wolverines went 8-5 last year and are likely to start a freshman quarterback in Bryce Underwood this year. But even so, they are notably improved across the board. Despite losing some key players to the NFL, the depth is there, and even with a freshman quarterback, the passing game should be much improved. Still, ESPN is bearish on Michigan's chances within the Big Ten, as the outlet ranked the Wolverines fifth in its preseason power ranking. 5. All eyes will be on five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, who has already been turning heads in Ann Arbor with his work ethic and dual-threat abilities. The Wolverines have the running game and figure to be stout defensively once again. If Underwood can supercharge the passing attack, the Wolverines could be back in contention for a playoff spot. This isn't to say that ESPN doesn't believe that the maize and blue will be out of the playoff hunt. In fact, the outlet says that the Wolverines are 'in the running' but not as likely to be in as Penn State, Ohio State, and Oregon. Michigan hopes to rejoin the CFP mix after its strong finish to last season, leaning on a talented defensive front and possibly incoming freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 recruit. With the schedule that the Wolverines have, the toughest games, besides OSU, are on the road. But Oklahoma was 6-7 last year, while Nebraska and USC were 7-6 -- far from being a murderer's row. If Michigan can, at the very least, play to expectations, it could be a sprint to the 12th game of the season against the Buckeyes. Reds rumors: Hunter Greene injury return is ‘imminent' for final playoff push
The post Reds rumors: Hunter Greene injury return is 'imminent' for final playoff push appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Cincinnati Reds are the first team out of the National League Wild Card race. With new manager Terry Francona running the show, they have raised their ceiling and could chase down a playoff spot. They've kept the train on the tracks without their ace for most of the season and now, he is coming back. The Reds are preparing for Hunter Greene to return from injury soon, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. 'It has been a long, slow climb back for Greene and the right groin strain he suffered, for a second time, on June 3,' Gonzalez reported. 'The right-hander seemed to be approaching a return in July, but he experienced lingering pain and had to shut it down once more. Now, though, his return seems imminent. Greene navigated a third rehab start on Sunday, during which he struck out seven batters in 3 ⅓ innings, and is scheduled to ramp up to 80 pitches on Friday.' The Reds are still getting great pitching from their starting rotation. Andrew Abbott was an All-Star, Nick Lodolo has been excellent, and Brady Singer has been great in his first season with Cincinnati. Greene was sensational before going on the IL, with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts. While the Reds are in contention this year, they have a bright future to consider as well. They should not push Greene this year and risk further injury, but considering his health through rehab starts, that should not be a big concern. If he continues his dominant form, the Reds can get hot down the stretch. Greene was solid in his first two years as a starter, with a 4.62 ERA in 46 starts. In 2024, he turned it up to another level. From July 1 to the end of last year, he posted a 1.02 ERA in nine starts. When he returns, it will be a massive boost to Cincinnati's rotation.
