France expels 12 Algerian officials as tensions escalate

Al Jazeera15-04-2025
France says it will expel 12 Algerian diplomatic and consular staff members and has recalled its ambassador from Algiers, deepening a crisis that threatens to unravel months of attempted reconciliation between the two countries.
The announcement on Tuesday comes a day after Algeria ordered 12 French diplomats to leave within 48 hours.
Algiers announced the expulsions after French prosecutors indicted three Algerian nationals, including a consular official, over the alleged kidnapping of a prominent government critic in Paris last year.
The activist, Amir Boukhors – better known to his more than one million TikTok followers as 'Amir DZ' – was granted asylum in France in 2023. He was abducted in a Paris suburb in April last year and released the next day. French authorities said the three suspects are also facing charges of 'terrorist' conspiracy.
It is the first time France has detained an employee of the Algerian consulate, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between Paris and the former French colony.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Monday that the expulsions were directly linked to the arrests.
The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs noted that Algeria's move, if carried out, would mark the first expulsion of French diplomats from the country since its independence in 1962.
Algeria, which has issued nine international arrest warrants for Boukhors on charges including fraud and 'terrorism', is demanding his extradition.
The escalation comes despite recent overtures between the two countries. Just a week earlier, Barrot met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and declared bilateral relations had returned to normal after a period of simmering tensions.
French President Emmanuel Macron's backing of Morocco's autonomy plan for the disputed region of Western Sahara last year sparked outrage in Algiers. The jailing of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal by an Algerian court last month only added to the strain with Macron calling for his release.

Trump hosts Zelensky for Oval Office talks

dpa Washington US President Donald Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky held a highly publicized meeting in the Oval Office on Monday. European leaders including Zelensky also met with Trump at the White House amid ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Just days after he warmly received Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump and Zelensky answered questions from journalists before closed-door discussions on ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting, a repeat of the infamous showdown in February that erupted into a heated shouting match on live television, was far more courteous this time. Zelensky notably wore a black suit in a departure from his usual military outfit. Following a bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office, the pair convened with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnland's Alexander Stubb. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also attended the meeting. During the meeting with Zelensky, Trump dodged questions about details on US peacekeeping troops and security guarantees for Ukraine, but promised: 'We will give them very good protection, very good security.'

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,271

Here is how things stand on Monday, August 18: Politics and diplomacy The leaders of several European countries announced that they will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet with United States President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday to discuss ending Russia's war on Ukraine. The leaders accompanying Zelenskyy will be: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. White House envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to 'robust security guarantees' for Ukraine that were 'game-changing' at a summit with Trump in Alaska on Friday. Zelenskyy welcomed Witkoff's announcement, saying it was 'a historic decision that the United States is ready to take part in security guarantees for Ukraine'. However, he added that the guarantees 'must be developed with Europe's participation'. Macron said that European leaders would ask 'to what extent' Washington would participate in the security guarantees on Monday. Macron also said that 'there is only one state proposing a peace that would be a capitulation: Russia'. Von der Leyen welcomed the proposal as an offer of NATO-style security guarantees from the US, adding that the 'coalition of the willing, including the European Union, is ready to do its share'. Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova, in a statement shared on Telegram on Sunday, said that Macron's claims of capitulation were an 'abject lie'. In an interview with CNN, Witkoff also said that Russia had 'made some concessions' in relation to 'all five of those regions', in an apparent reference to the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Crimea. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on NBC that a ceasefire 'is not off the table' but 'what we ultimately are aiming for is an end to this war', a day after Trump said he was aiming for a peace agreement without a prior ceasefire. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday morning, simply saying: 'BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA. STAY TUNED!', without elaborating. Fighting Russian forces killed five people and injured four in Ukraine's Donetsk region, Governor Vadym Filashkin said in a post on Telegram on Sunday. The attacks killed two people in Raiske, two more people in Sviatohorivka, and one person in Kostiantynivka, Filashkin said. Four people were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a commercial facility in the village of Rakitnoye in Russia's Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a post on Telegram on Sunday. Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported on Sunday that in total, Ukrainian forces struck 13 locations across Belgorod in one day, using 111 drones and 52 munitions. TASS also reported on Sunday that Russian forces shot down four aerial bombs and 300 drones in the past day. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces claimed that Ukrainian forces cleared the city of Pokrovsk of Russian forces and occupiers. Ukrainian forces advanced up to 1km (0.6 miles), in the Yablunivka area of the Sumy region, the General Staff added in a post on Telegram on Sunday.

France says Mali's arrest of embassy worker on coup charges ‘unfounded'

agencies paris France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has said that a French man recently arrested in Mali on 'unfounded' charges of plotting a coup was a French embassy employee. The Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that it was in talks with Bamako to 'clear up any misunderstanding' and obtain the 'immediate release' of Yann Vezilier, who had been arrested in recent weeks alongside two generals and other military personnel. It added that the arrest of the French national was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Mali's security minister, General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, had announced Vezilier's arrest on Thursday, alleging that he had been working for the French intelligence services, mobilising 'political leaders, civil society actors, and military personnel' to destabilise the country. Mohammedine said that a full investigation into the alleged plot, which he said had been launched on August 1, was under way and that 'the situation is completely under control'. The arrests followed a crackdown on dissent following a pro-democracy rally in May, the first since the military government came to power after back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021. France's once close relationship with its former colony in West Africa's Sahel region has soured since soldiers seized power nearly four years ago. The military government, led by President Assimi Goita, has turned away from Western partners, notably former colonial power France, expelling its troops and turning to Russia for security assistance. The country has since been gripped by a security crisis since 2012, fuelled notably by violence from groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the ISIL (ISIS) group, as well as local criminal gangs. In June, Goita was granted an additional five years in power, despite the military government's earlier promises of a return to civilian rule by March 2024.
