Introducing the Lantern series ‘No Kentucky Home'
Driving from the Lantern's office in Frankfort to my house in Lexington, I'm often snagged by a couple of red lights, where I avoid eye contact with the person standing on the corner holding a cardboard sign asking for money.
One of the luxuries of city life, I suppose, is keeping some people no closer than your peripheral vision — and thoughts.
That luxury is less available in small towns, where the person on the street is not anonymous but someone you once worked beside on the line at the poultry plant. Or someone who reminds you of your child or mother. Or someone who's sleeping in your church's parking lot.
Today we begin a series of stories from one such Kentucky place.
It's a small place that looms large in the imagination because of its musical heritage. It inspired John Prine to sing 'Oh, daddy, won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County' in his anti strip-mining anthem 'Paradise.' Not much more than 30 miles from the cradle of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe's Rosine, Muhlenberg County contributed a guitar style — thumb-picking — made famous by native son Merle Travis, who also wrote the GOAT of coal mining songs: 'You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.' Don and Phil Everly — the chart-topping Everly Brothers — trace their lineage to Central City.
Muhlenberg County is not extraordinary, though, in another respect: The struggle to come to terms with what it owes the people who many of us (me included) conveniently keep on the far outskirts of our minds. I'm confident we'd find similar stories and conflicts across Kentucky, in state capitols and all the way to the debates raging right now in Washington, D.C.
These very personal stories introduce us to people who don't avoid eye contact, who see the 'campers' and couch surfers and evicted as neighbors. And, most emphatically, not as eyesores or threats.
These stories are about a shortage of services and housing, made worse by a surplus of untreated addiction and trauma.
Reporter Liam Niemeyer and I are sorry that some officials were unwilling to talk to him. Liam reached out via email, phone messages and dropping by. And it's not too late. Their perspectives are important; we need to hear them, especially those of people who hold elected office. I recognize that solutions are not obvious, simple or inexpensive.
We are able to tell such intimate stories because Liam has spent a lot of time getting to know the people and the place. We weren't sure what the story would be in the summer of 2023 when, pursuing an idea sparked by a report in a local newspaper, Liam spent a day with several people in Muhlenberg County who lacked housing. He also began to meet local people who wanted to help. As he stayed in touch by phone and in person, we knew we had a story worth telling even as we wrestled with how to tell it.
I hope you will find our efforts worthwhile as you meet Mallie and Gwen, Courtney and Jennifer, Zachary and the cantankerous but lovably philosophical John Paul.
We hope these personal stories will inform and inspire policy discussions and the search for solutions.

Oasis Dublin performance hailed as 'noisiest in Irish history'
Oasis have been hailed as the "noisiest and most celebratory concert in Irish live music history" after their performance at Croke Park in Dublin. The band took to the stage for the sixteenth concert on their reunion tour, playing yet another sell out show on the world tour after dates in Cardiff, Manchester, and London. Noel Gallagher previously played Croke Park back in July 2017, performing to a half empty stadium while supporting U2 on their sold out 30th anniversary tour of album The Joshua Tree, DublinLive reports. Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here Oasis played to a crowd of some 80,000 people at the venue, with the stadium already nearly full by the time second support act Richard Ashcroft took to the stage at 7pm. Journalist Mark Kavanagh went along to the performance for DublinLive to see the iconic Manchester band as they continue their world tour. Here's what he had to say: The joyous scenes and universal praise from the 15 previous Oasis Live 25 triumphs at Cardiff, Manchester and London perhaps heightened the sense of eager anticipation for the two Croke Park shows. The city has been buzzing all week and I've never had so many people enquire if I knew where they could get tickets. Ashcroft slayed the hyper Irish audience and the singalongs for his best known tunes suggested the raucous carnival atmosphere inside the Dublin stadium might just eclipse all of the UK dates and then some. And that's because no supporters in the world are more deafening than Irish fans, who tonight, like Oasis, were in scorching form, lapping up the solid gold set of back-to-back glorious anthems. Join our Oasis WhatsApp group HERE A wall of sound erupted when the siblings walked on stage before launching into a seismic opening salvo of Hello, Acquiesce and (What's the Story) Morning Glory. The wave of excitedly bobbing bodies on the pitch resembled a giant mosh shook his tambourine and spat out every lyric like his life depended on it; his voice sounded more potent than it has ever been, and especially powerful on the momentous Rock 'n Roll Star and Slide Away. The band were super tight, glued together by the chug of rhythm guitarist (and founding member) Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs. Noel looked not just relaxed and assured, but like he was actually enjoying every solo turns – which started with a pace-changing Talk Tonight – were the emotional heart of a spectacular show. Hearing more than 80,000 people almost drown him out by singing along to every word of Half The World Away was emotional. Bear in mind this was originally released as just a bonus track on 1994's standalone single Whatever. Noel stepped it back up a gear with Little By Little before Liam stormed the stage again for another rousing run of favourites that kicked off with D'You Know What I Mean? and Stand By Me and finished with phenomenal versions of the epic Live Forever and the blistering Rock N Roll Star. At that point, it was already a 10 out of 10 performance even without the ensuing encore of The Masterplan and crowd-pleasers Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova, the latter the type of song for which stadium-sized concerts like this were invented. It's incredible that all but three of the 23 songs performed at Croke Park were released in an 18-month imperial era between April 1994 and October 1995, and quite a few of them were just B-sides. This was a magnificent event, everything Irish fans could have wished for, with a little bit extra sprinkled on top. The sight and sound of multitudes of fans too young to have ever seen Oasis in concert before punching their arms and singing their hearts out in unison with 90s veterans like me was quite the communal experience to behold. The band was loud but the Irish crowd were even louder and Sunday night's revellers will need to up their game to beat there be more shows to follow this tour? It would seem like a folly not to seize the moment and do a couple of Slane Castle shows in 2026 alongside at least two mammoth Knebworth outings. On the evidence of tonight, I sincerely hope so.

Halle Berry Trolls Ex-Husband David Justice's Remarks About Why They Split While Celebrating Birthday: ‘Phew'
Halle Berry spent her birthday trolling ex-husband David Justice's recent comments about why their relationship didn't work out. 'Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering,' the actress, 59, wrote via Instagram alongside a series of snaps while celebrating her birthday in a tropical destination on Thursday, August 14. The first photo of the slideshow featured Berry smiling brightly as she posed in front of the ocean. Berry rocked a yellow bikini plus a blue and white bandana. An additional pic showed off Berry and boyfriend Van Hunt relaxing in a cabana and snacking on some chips. Berry also included multiple shots of her taking in the tropical paradise, including one of her holding a glass of wine between her toes as she lay out to overlook the ocean. Berry also gave a glimpse of her birthday celebration, including a slice of chocolate cake with a candle on it. She also received a card seemingly from her kids, Nahla, 17, and Maceo, 11, as it was addressed to 'Mom' on the envelope. (The Oscar winner shares Nahla with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, and Maceo with ex-husband Olivier Martinez.) Halle Berry's Ex David Justice Admits Questioning Whether She Was the 'Woman He'd Have Kids With' Berry's caption was a subtle dig at Justice's remarks earlier this month about his reasoning for why he and the actress separated in 1996. 'I was young and I had only, honestly, been in one relationship before her. My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast,' the former baseball player, 59, said while appearing on the 'All the Smoke' podcast in August. 'So, I'm looking at my mom and I'm a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean.' Justice continued: 'Then I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' At that time, as a young guy, she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues. I'll say this, we never had any issues about any women, other men.' Berry and Justice tied the knot on New Year's Day in 1993 after meeting the previous year. The pair split in 1996 and finalized their divorce the following year. In 2001, Berry moved on with Eric Benét, whom she was married to from 2001 to 2005. Following her split from Benét, she moved on with Aubry from 2005 to 2010. Berry was later linked to Martinez from 2013 to 2016. The Catwoman actress has been in a relationship with Hunt since 2020. Solve the daily Crossword

Halle Berry turns heads with birthday bikini photos from vacation
Halle Berry is sharing snapshots from her family vacation in paradise. The actress celebrated her 59th birthday by sharing a number of photos from her beach vacation, which included pictures of her in different Monday Swimwear bikinis. In one of the photos, Berry laughs at the camera while dressed in a gold bikini, which she paired with a silk headscarf and white sunglasses. In another, she throws her head back with laughter while dressed in the same gold bikini, this time pairing it with a long-sleeve cropped cover-up and a tropical drink in a coconut. Other photos show her from behind as she looks out at the ocean while sitting on the trampoline attached to her boat anchored while out at sea. "Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering," she captioned the post, seemingly referencing recent comments made by her ex-husband, David Justice, during his Aug. 7 appearance on Matt Barnes' "All the Smoke" podcast. On the podcast, Justice explained that his understanding of relationships "wasn't vast," and he believed at the time that a wife "should cook, clean, [and be] traditional, you know? "Then, I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?'" he explained. "At that time, as a young guy — she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem, like, motherly, and then we start having issues." Fans of the actress flooded the comments section with birthday messages, including some famous faces. Actress Julianne Moore wrote, "Happy birthday beautiful," while Jurnee Smollett wrote, "Happy birthday to our Queen!!!!! Love you so." Others were tickled by Berry's caption, with one fan writing, "that's awesome your [sic] having a lot of fun being a mother and a cook," and another adding, "Your the best at being a mother Halle." A third chimed in with, "Great clap back!" while another added, "AMAZING CAPTION." One of the photos in her birthday post featured her relaxing in a bed while in a white bikini with boyfriend Van Hunt, who she has been with since 2020. "The minute I started to feel like I understood myself and what I had been doing wrong, Van's brother, who I had known for many years, came to me and said, 'You should meet my brother,'" she told Marie Claire in September 2024. "The nature of the way this happened, I have a real belief that this is it. This is my person."
