Introducing the Lantern series ‘No Kentucky Home'

John Prine, whose statue overlooks Festival Square in Central City, is part of the rich musical heritage that sets Muhlenberg County apart. Local concerns about a rise in homelessness and conflicts over how to respond give it something in common with many other places. (Kentucky Lantern photo by Austin Anthony)
Driving from the Lantern's office in Frankfort to my house in Lexington, I'm often snagged by a couple of red lights, where I avoid eye contact with the person standing on the corner holding a cardboard sign asking for money.
One of the luxuries of city life, I suppose, is keeping some people no closer than your peripheral vision — and thoughts.
That luxury is less available in small towns, where the person on the street is not anonymous but someone you once worked beside on the line at the poultry plant. Or someone who reminds you of your child or mother. Or someone who's sleeping in your church's parking lot.
Today we begin a series of stories from one such Kentucky place.
It's a small place that looms large in the imagination because of its musical heritage. It inspired John Prine to sing 'Oh, daddy, won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County' in his anti strip-mining anthem 'Paradise.' Not much more than 30 miles from the cradle of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe's Rosine, Muhlenberg County contributed a guitar style — thumb-picking — made famous by native son Merle Travis, who also wrote the GOAT of coal mining songs: 'You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.' Don and Phil Everly — the chart-topping Everly Brothers — trace their lineage to Central City.
Muhlenberg County is not extraordinary, though, in another respect: The struggle to come to terms with what it owes the people who many of us (me included) conveniently keep on the far outskirts of our minds. I'm confident we'd find similar stories and conflicts across Kentucky, in state capitols and all the way to the debates raging right now in Washington, D.C.
These very personal stories introduce us to people who don't avoid eye contact, who see the 'campers' and couch surfers and evicted as neighbors. And, most emphatically, not as eyesores or threats.
These stories are about a shortage of services and housing, made worse by a surplus of untreated addiction and trauma.
Reporter Liam Niemeyer and I are sorry that some officials were unwilling to talk to him. Liam reached out via email, phone messages and dropping by. And it's not too late. Their perspectives are important; we need to hear them, especially those of people who hold elected office. I recognize that solutions are not obvious, simple or inexpensive.
We are able to tell such intimate stories because Liam has spent a lot of time getting to know the people and the place. We weren't sure what the story would be in the summer of 2023 when, pursuing an idea sparked by a report in a local newspaper, Liam spent a day with several people in Muhlenberg County who lacked housing. He also began to meet local people who wanted to help. As he stayed in touch by phone and in person, we knew we had a story worth telling even as we wrestled with how to tell it.
I hope you will find our efforts worthwhile as you meet Mallie and Gwen, Courtney and Jennifer, Zachary and the cantankerous but lovably philosophical John Paul.
We hope these personal stories will inform and inspire policy discussions and the search for solutions.

Miley Cyrus's Completely transparent Gown Wasn't Her Only Statement on NYC Trip

Miley Cyrus brought her 'Walk of Fame' lyrics to life for a day out in New York City yesterday, 'walk[ing] the concrete like it's a stage.' For a full day of press for her ninth studio album Something Beautiful, the Grammy winner began the day signing autographs and taking photos with fans wearing a black sequin halter top with denim shorts, a black belt, fishnet tights, black and tan heeled boots, and shades. She posted photos of the look on Instagram with the caption, 'Your love not just today, but for nearly two decades means so much more to me than the words I can find at the end of a long, fulfilling day. You make my world go round. Thank you for showing up & supporting the release of Something Beautiful with me @roughtradenyc.' (That same day, Cyrus also stopped by the classic record store Rough Trade for a performance and signing.) That evening, she went for a more risqué look when she was spotted arriving at her hotel in a floor-length transparent black dress with a plunging neckline. She accessorized with a gold necklace, dainty hoop earrings, and shades. She switched up her hair, too, opting for a messy up-do. And while stopping to sign autographs, one fan in particular had a noteworthy experience to share. A man named Liam revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Cyrus signed the message 'the best Liam' on his Something Beautiful vinyl. Cyrus's ex-husband is Liam Hemsworth, so some fans saw it as a reference to him. While sitting with Fallon, Cyrus revealed that her favorite song on the new album is 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved,' featuring supermodel Naomi Campbell. 'With Naomi, what I do is treat her the way I'd like to be treated,' she said. 'Call time? 5 P.M. Glam? Lots of glam. Lots of clothes. All fabulous things.' She went on to speak more about the album and why she was drawn to featuring Campbell on the LP. 'This project is such a dream and such a fantasy, and that's what I've always loved about supermodels and the runway and fashion. It's something that's so out of this world.' Oasis fans invited to send personal stories for Oasis Live '25 Tour film

Oasis fans are being invited to share their stories about "a particular song" that holds "deep meaning" to them for the Oasis Live '25 Tour film. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is producing the reuniting Britpop legends' documentary, with renowned filmmakers Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace on board to direct - the duo behind LCD Soundsystem's concert film Shut Up And Play The Hits. Magna Studios - whose credits include Beastie Boys Story, Gangs Of London, 20000 Days On Earth, and Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now - are heading up the production and are asking fans to send in their special memories associated with the Live Forever hitmakers' songs for potential inclusion in the film. A post on the website read: "Now, in the year of Oasis' sell out reunion tour, Magna Studios and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, A Thousand Blows) - in association with Oasis - are making a film exploring how this band's music has become so important to so many. We are asking people all over the world if there is a particular Oasis song that has deep meaning for you. A song that tells the story of a life changing moment, a love, a loss, a heartbreak, or a break for freedom. 'Whatever the Oasis song, whatever the story – tell us…' Oasis' UK and Ireland shows - their first in 16 years - will kick off in Cardiff on July 4 and see them joined by special guests Richard Ashcroft and Cast. The Supersonic band will also play USA, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. Meanwhile, frontman Liam Gallagher recently dismissed fan concerns over his vocal health ahead of the long-awaited reunion tour. The 52-year-old frontman - who has Hashimoto's disease, which can cause a hoarse voice - sparked a frenzy online after posting about taking throat lozenges, sour candies and cough syrup, prompting speculation from fans that his voice might not hold up during his and older brother Noel's upcoming stadium comeback shows this summer. One fan messaged him on X after his admission: '@liamgallagher If you need that many throat stuff does that mean anytime your voice can still go? We don't want cancellations.' Liam replied: 'Shut up you melt.' Another user asked the singer: '@liamgallagher Did you eat all your sour throat candies yesterday?' – to which Liam responded: '@adele_liam I did 2 pacs.' The Oasis reunion marks the first time the band have performed together since 2009, when they split after a backstage altercation between the siblings at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. Their return to the stage has been one of the most anticipated music events of the decade. Rehearsals kicked off in London, with Liam joining his bandmates — including his brother Noel, 58 — for rehearsals this week.

James Gunn says Peacemaker season 2 has a "really, really, really big cameo" as he teases key connections between the HBO show and the upcoming Superman

All eyes might be in Superman right now as it is the first movie in the new DC Universe (DCU), but James Gunn is already teasing many surprises and cameos for the upcoming Peacemaker season 2. The show is set to return in August after a three-year hiatus. According to the DC boss, that big gap in between seasons has allowed him to weave the story into the DCU in a more organic way. "I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we're doing, so it's very much connected to Superman and it's very much connected to what comes after," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. "I had a rough idea of what I was going to do, but it was actually quite different than what the show ended up being," he added. The first Peacemaker season 2 trailer already revealed some unexpected cameos from the new Superman, including Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord. They are not the only ones, though. "You've seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman," Gunn explains about the connections between the HBO show and Superman, revealing that "the QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2". "We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show," he teased. Could that big cameo also be from Superman? Could it be Superman himself, or even Supergirl? Or is it perhaps related to the old DCEU? We will have to wait and see how DC Studios' grand plans in DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters unfold. As for the plot for Peacemaker season 2, Gunn also revealed that the story will follow John Cena's hero while he struggles to be taken seriously among the superhero community. "We come into season 2 with Peacemaker knowing that he saved the world from the Butterflies. He thinks he's a big star now, and he should be a real superhero. And we see at the very beginning of episode 1 that he's meeting with the group of superheroes from Superman, and he's basically interviewing for membership in the group. But they just mock him the entire time, so he's not taken seriously," he said. Peacemaker season 2 will be released on August 21, 2025.
