India must become more energy-efficient for sustainable growth: IIT-Jodhpur director
2
Nagpur: By increasing the share of renewables, electrifying end-use sectors, and utilizing biomass-enabled carbon capture, India could potentially save 36.9 GW of energy demand, said Avinash Kumar Agarwal, director of IIT-Jodhpur, on Tuesday.
Agarwal, who was delivering the keynote address at the 'Energy Dialogues: Clean. Viable. Inclusive' workshop organized by CSIR-Neeri, stressed India must become more energy-efficient to ensure sustainable growth. G Sridhar, director general, SSS-NIBE, Kapurthala, and Thallada Bhaskar, director, CSIR-AMPRI, Bhopal, were the guests of honour.
"Energy consumption is directly tied to economic growth," Agrawal said, noting that India's per capita greenhouse gas emissions are low.
Referring to India's Panchamrit goals, he said, "While we are aiming for 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, India's high coal consumption (400 million tonnes/year) necessitates the development of efficient coal technologies, including exploring high-ash coal and hydrogen (blue to green), for future energy solutions.
"
He urged scientists to focus on the development of green fuels compatible with IC engines to facilitate a more inclusive and sustainable energy transition.

Neeri director S Venkata Mohan stressed energy access is a fundamental right. Neeri chief scientist Nitin Labhsetwar said, "India must chart its own low-emission growth path, rather than blindly emulating Western models."
Later, Agarwal chaired a session moderated by Labhsetwar, which brought together leading scientists and innovators committed to tackling climate change with home-grown solutions. The central theme of the discussion was how Neeri is gearing up to take sustainability to the next level with several ambitious initiatives.
The institute is focusing heavily on scaling up carbon capture technologies that can reduce industrial emissions effectively, alongside developing integrated solar-biomass hybrid energy systems designed to maximise clean power generation even in rural areas.
The panellists made it clear that these projects are not just lab experiments but are being designed for real-world impact solutions that will reach communities, industries and policymakers alike.
Amit Bansiwal, chief scientist at Neeri, spoke passionately about the institute's roadmap to embed sustainability across every stage of a product's life cycle, ensuring environmental responsibility is built into development from the ground up.
Avneesh Anshul, principal scientist at Neeri, emphasised Neeri's commitment to making clean technologies accessible and practical for India's diverse population, highlighting collaborations with industry partners to bring innovations from pilot stages to large-scale adoption.
S Venkata Mohan outlined plans to strengthen grass roots innovation, encouraging local solutions that align with national sustainability goals.
The event concluded on an optimistic note, reinforced by LITU VC Atul Vaidya's call for a science-driven future that balances innovation with social and environmental needs.

Asian Paints saw Q1 sales drop marginally by 0.2% to ₹8,924 crore while profits declined 6% to ₹1,081 crore. The paint sector's woes deepened with Indigo Paints and Akzo Nobel India both reporting double-digit profit declines. PSU behemoth Coal India reported a 21% profit decline to ₹8,590 crore on sales of ₹31,880 crore. Power major NTPC saw profits crash 32% and revenue fall 3%. Despite the widespread earnings disappointment, market veterans remain cautiously optimistic about the road ahead. "Earnings growth for FY25 is tracking in line with expectations at high single digits, and consensus estimates for the next two years point towards a recovery to low double-digit growth," said Shridatta Bhandwaldar, Head Equities, Canara Robeco Asset Management Company. "Midcaps continue to show the strongest earnings resilience, followed by large caps, while small caps remain a concern given stretched valuations and weaker earnings trends." Bhandwaldar expects consolidation to continue until earnings momentum strengthens. "In our portfolios, we remain constructive on large banks, insurance, industrials, telecom, pharma, aviation, and hospitals, while staying cautious on global commodities, tier-2/3 NBFCs, and FMCG until clear signs of recovery emerge," he added. Satish Mishra, Fund Manager, Tata Asset Management, acknowledged the weakness but found silver linings. "Q1FY26 earnings season has been weak but broadly in line with expectations. Large sectors like IT, financials, auto and consumer have shown weak earnings growth while few sectors like cement, healthcare have shown strong earnings growth," he said. Mishra remains optimistic about the second half. "We do believe that earnings growth in H2FY26 will be better than H1. The RBI's frontloaded 100-bps rate cut, ₹1 lakh crore in tax relief in budget and favourable monsoon are all expected to stimulate credit growth and consumption." Jimeet Modi, Founder & CEO, SAMCO Group, sees opportunity in the current turmoil. "Q4 FY25 earnings came in below expectations, with broad-based profit pressures across the segment. This reinforces the need for caution, even as valuations have moderated post the July correction," he said. "The recent dip has reset market expectations, creating a more favourable entry point for sound companies. With India's structural growth drivers intact and domestic liquidity remaining robust, smallcaps could see improved traction in H2 FY26." India ‘recalcitrant' in trade talks amid tariff dispute, says US Treasury Secretary Bessent
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said India has been 'a bit recalcitrant' in its trade negotiations with Washington, days after President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. In an interview with Fox Business Network's Kudlow, Bessent said several major trade agreements remain unfinished, naming Switzerland and India among them. 'There are big trade deals that aren't done and aren't agreed. Switzerland is still around; India has been a bit recalcitrant. I think we have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries,' ANI quoted him as saying. On the possibility of concluding tariff talks by October, Bessent added, 'That's aspirational. I think we're in a good position.' Ethanol blending in petrol won't void your insurance policy, gives better acceleration, doesn't affect mileage: Govt on E20
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said that 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) improves acceleration, lowers carbon emissions, and does not significantly impact mileage. It also dismissed concerns that E20 use could void vehicle insurance, calling such claims 'totally baseless' and the result of a misinterpreted social media post. E20 offers better acceleration The ministry stated that E20 offers 'better acceleration, better ride quality and most importantly, lowered carbon emissions by approximately 30% as compared to E10 fuel.' With a higher octane number of about 108.5 versus petrol's 84.4, ethanol-blended fuels are suited for modern high-compression engines. Mileage depends on several factors beyond fuel type, including driving habits, regular maintenance, tyre condition, and air conditioning usage. Research by Indian Oil Corporation , the Automotive Research Association of India, and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers shows that any efficiency drop in compatible vehicles is marginal. Some models have been E20-ready since 2009. Insurance validity unchanged The ministry rejected suggestions that using E20 fuel could lead to insurance claims being denied. 'This fear mongering is totally baseless and has been clarified by an insurance company whose tweet screenshot was deliberately misinterpreted to create fear and confusion. Usage of E20 fuel has no impact of the validity of insurance of vehicles in India,' it said. Live Events You Might Also Like: Govt says 20% ethanol blended petrol doesn't have any negative impact on older vehicles It added that authorised service stations are available to support vehicle owners who believe their vehicles may need tuning or parts replacement for optimum performance. Broader benefits and future roadmap Beyond performance, the ethanol blending programme reduces greenhouse gas emissions, cuts crude oil imports, and increases farmer incomes. From 2014-15 to July 2025, blending by public sector oil companies saved over ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange and avoided about 736 lakh metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The government's current roadmap keeps E20 in place until October 31, 2026. Any move beyond will follow consultation with automakers, ethanol producers, fuel suppliers, and other stakeholders. Ethanol blending as a transition fuel The ministry said biofuels and natural gas are 'India's bridge fuels' and part of the country's commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. A NITI Aayog study found that greenhouse gas emissions from sugarcane-based ethanol are 65% lower than petrol, while maize-based ethanol reduces emissions by 50%. 'With the Ethanol blending programme, money which was earlier spent on crude oil imports is now going to our farmers who have become 'Urjadaatas' apart from being 'Annadatas',' the statement said. From 2014-15 to July 2025, blending by public sector oil marketing companies saved over ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange, replaced about 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil, and cut CO₂ emissions by about 736 lakh metric tonnes — equivalent to planting 30 crore trees. This year, at 20% blending, farmers are expected to receive around ₹40,000 crore, while forex savings may reach ₹43,000 crore. Performance and fuel efficiency Concerns over mileage loss, the ministry said, had been anticipated and studied as early as 2020 by an inter-ministerial committee of NITI Aayog, with research support from IOCL, ARAI, and SIAM. It said E20 offers better acceleration, improved ride quality, and about 30% lower carbon emissions compared to E10. The ministry highlighted ethanol's higher octane number of about 108.5 versus petrol's 84.4, adding that vehicles tuned for E20 'deliver better acceleration which is a very important factor in city driving conditions.' The claim that E20 drastically reduces fuel efficiency was rejected, with officials noting that mileage depends on multiple factors, including driving habits, maintenance, and tyre condition. You Might Also Like: Ethanol has become pricier than petrol: Oil ministry Vehicle readiness and global examples Discussions with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and major automakers found that some vehicles have been E20-compatible since 2009, making efficiency loss negligible in such cases. The ministry said Brazil runs successfully on E27 fuel 'with zero issues,' using the same automakers that sell in India. E20 meets BIS specifications and automotive industry standards. For older vehicles, some rubber parts and gaskets may need earlier replacement, which the ministry described as inexpensive and manageable during routine servicing. Pricing and consumer concerns The ministry said ethanol was cheaper than petrol when a 2020-21 NITI Aayog report was prepared, but procurement prices have since risen. The current average ethanol cost for 2024-25 is ₹71.32 per litre, higher than refined petrol, yet the government continues blending to support energy security, farmers' incomes, and environmental goals. It also dismissed claims that E20 affects vehicle insurance validity, calling such fears 'totally baseless' and citing a misinterpreted tweet as the source of confusion.
