FAMU football 2025 training camp primer: What to know for when the Rattlers take the field
Rattler players reported to Tallahassee on Wednesday, July 30, and had preliminary training camp meetings with coaches before the team's first practice.
The Rattlers, head coached by James Colzie III, are returning from posting a 7-5 record during the 2024 season.
Last year, FAMU had signature victories over Black College Football National Champion runners-up South Carolina State and beat Bethune-Cookman in the Florida Classic for the fourth consecutive season.
However, the Rattlers were upset at Southwestern Athletic Conference's worst team, Mississippi Valley State, to end their 23-game home winning streak and lost to Black College Football National Champions Jackson State.
FAMU opens its 12-game regular season schedule on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. versus Howard in the Orange Blossom Classic at Miami Gardens' Hard Rock Stadium.
Year two could be Colzie's and the Rattlers' biggest leap.
And now, FAMU football is preparing to do the groundwork to rebound from last season, starting with Friday's opening practice.
How many preseason training camp practices will FAMU football have in 2025?
The Rattlers will practice 20 times, including two scrimmages from Friday, Aug. 1, until Saturday, Aug. 23, leading into the season opener versus the Howard Bison.
FAMU football's 2025 preseason training camp the prelude to a bounce-back season?
The Rattlers went 7-5 last season in Colzie's first year as head coach.
It was a season removed from when FAMU football, then led by current Florida International coach Willie Simmons, defeated Howard in the Celebration Bowl to claim the program's 16th Black College National Championship.
Seven wins are FAMU's lowest win total since the 2018 season, when the Rattlers finished 6-5.
The SWAC picked the Rattlers to finish second in the East division behind the defending league and HBCU football champions, Jackson State. The prediction means FAMU is expected to have a similar season to last year.

FAMU has eight preseason All-SWAC selections on the team this year.
Thad Franklin Jr., running back, headlines the Rattlers on offense on the Preseason All-SWAC First Team. His blockers, Charles Davis and Ashton Grable, join him on the first team.
Edge rusher Davion Westmoreland, linebacker Nay'Ron Jenkins, and cornerback TJ Huggins made the SWAC's preseason defensive first team.
Defensive lineman James Gardner Jr. and defensive back Jameel Sanders round out the Rattlers' preseason SWAC picks as defensive second teamers.
FAMU football's 2025 preseason training camp will have some heated position battles
FAMU's quarterback competition will headline the Rattlers' preseason training camp this year.
The Rattlers have a handful of quarterbacks entering practices, including transfers Tyler Jefferson from Central Michigan, RJ Johnson III out of Toledo, and former Long Beach City College signal caller Jett Petty. FAMU also has Lawrence Wright IV, a reserve quarterback from the Florida Gators, but he is also listed as an athlete, meaning he could play multiple positions.
The Rattlers' returning quarterbacks are Traven Green and Bryson Martin, who sat behind last year's starter Daniel Richardson.
Newly promoted offensive coordinator Henry Burris, who's also the quarterbacks coach, will closely watch the battle to help determine FAMU's 2025 starting signal caller.
Other spots up for grabs during the Rattlers' camp could be the top wide receiver, the defensive end spot opposite from Westmoreland, cornerback, and kicker.

Love's absence, Colts QB battle are feature attractions of joint practice with Packers
WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Jordan Love showed up to Thursday's practice wearing a red jersey and a bucket hat, his injured left thumb in a protective cast. A short distance away, on a second field, Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones resumed their battle to become the Indianapolis Colts' starter. 'Had a torn ligament in my thumb and we did a surgery to repair it. So on the road to recovery,' Love said in his first public comments since having the procedure earlier this week on his non-throwing hand. 'If this was in the middle of the season, we probably would have been doing something that we didn't get the surgery on. But with it still being early, having time to recover and be fully ready for Week 1, the recommendation was for surgery.' The hope is Love begins working his way back next week and will have a couple of additional weeks to recover before Green Bay's Sept. 7 season opener against Detroit. Love said it hasn't been decided whether he'll participate in next week's joint practice with Seattle. So for now, Malik Willis is running the offense. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters Tuesday that Love would be out at least a week. 'I think easing back into it, we might do some things differently just to protect the thumb for now,' Love said. 'That's one of those things where, after having the surgery, you don't want to go back out there and re-injure it before the season. So we'll be smart with it.' Love was injured on the final play of Green Bay's second series in last week's loss to the New York Jets. Initially, he said he didn't think anything was wrong, but he talked with trainers to see what they thought. While he practiced Monday, Love was making handoffs with his right hand instead of his left. Meanwhile, the Colts still haven't announced who will start their opener against Miami. Richardson is expected to get his most extensive action of the preseason when the Colts and Packers square off Saturday. Coach Shane Steichen said earlier this week he plans to use Jones for the first two series and let Richardson take most of the first-half snaps. That assumes Richardson stays healthy. He missed some of Indy's offseason workouts with a sore throwing shoulder, and then dislocated the pinkie on his throwing hand during last week's preseason loss at Baltimore. Trainers popped the finger back into place, but Richardson didn't take another snap against the Ravens because he couldn't grip the ball properly. By Saturday, he was back on the practice field. Jones and Richardson continued to split snaps Thursday, with both taking turns with the starters and the backups. But as another week nears its end, no starter has been named. 'I think that's natural,' Jones said when asked if he wonders when a winner will emerge. 'I think in this position, obviously, you're aware of it and are thinking about it. But I think you know that strategy for me and anyone in this situation is kind of focus as much as you can on what you need to do.' Colts coach Shane Steichen and Packers coach Matt LaFleur were watching more than just quarterbacks, especially after miserable opening-week performances from both teams. Near the end of practice, the Packers were credited with a sack of Jones, who then threw an interception as play continued. He was far from alone in making a mistake. After spending the 2024-25 NBA season with the Dallas Mavericks, 25-year-old forward Kessler Edwards has agreed to a training camp contract with the Denver Nuggets. This deal was first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Last season, Edwards played 40 games, averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game. He shot 49.6 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from 3-point range, both of which were the best averages of his young career. Edwards was drafted 44th overall in 2021 by the Brooklyn Nets and spent the first two seasons of his career in New York City. He was then a member of the Sacramento Kings before spending the entire 2024-25 season with Dallas. This has been an eventful offseason for the Nuggets. Aside from trading Michael Porter Jr. and a future first-round pick to the Nets for Cam Johnson, the Nuggets also revamped their roster with the addition of veterans like Jonas Valanciunas, Bruce Brown, and Tim Hardaway Jr. DaRon Holmes II, Denver's first-round pick from the 2024 NBA Draft, will also be making his debut this year after suffering an Achilles injury at the start of Summer League last season. The organization remains very high on the recent first-round pick as an impactful talent in the frontcourt next to three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets currently have 14 players under contract, which is why they will take a look at Edwards and see if he can fit in during training camp. All three of the team's two-way roster spots are currently occupied by Curtis Jones, Tamar Bates, and Spencer Jones. Although he has bounced around between three different teams, Edwards has always been viewed as a potential 3-and-D type of player on the wing given his versatility. Denver is always seeking more depth on the wing and reliable, defensive-minded players who can provide extra production behind Aaron Gordon at the power forward position. Perhaps Edwards will turn out to be a diamond in the rough for the Nuggets during training camp, as his Exhibit 10 contract can easily turn into a standard, one-year deal. The Nuggets went 50-32 last season, marking the first time this franchise has won at least 50 games in three consecutive seasons since they achieved this feat in four years from 2008-11. Ultimately, Denver was unable to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games during their Western Conference semifinal series.
