Peter Navarro to India: Act like a US partner or pay the price
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday criticised India's crude oil imports from Russia, calling the move "opportunistic" and warning that if India "wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the US, it needs to start acting like one". In an opinion piece in the Financial Times, Navarro alleged that India was "now cosying up to both Russia and China" and argued that New Delhi's Russian crude purchases must stop as they were financing Moscow's war in Ukraine. His comments come ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, even as Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi visits New Delhi for talks on the disputed border. "This two-pronged policy will hit India where it hurts-its access to US markets - even as it seeks to cut off the financial lifeline it has extended to Russia's war effort," Navarro wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo He said India's reliance on Russian crude was "opportunistic and deeply corrosive of global efforts to isolate Putin's war economy". The remarks assume significance as US trade negotiators have postponed their planned August 25-29 visit for the sixth round of Bilateral Trade Agreement talks , the first tranche of which is targeted for conclusion by autumn. Live Events Trump has already imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, including a 25% penal levy for continued purchases of Russian oil, despite the external affairs ministry's assertion that India is being unfairly singled out while the US and EU continue to source energy from Moscow. While the 25% tariff on Indian goods entering the US took effect on August 7, the additional 25%, announced as penalty for crude and defence imports from Russia, will kick in on August 27. "India acts as a global clearing house for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs," Navarro wrote, adding that it was risky to transfer cutting-edge US military capabilities to a country "cosying up to both Russia and China".

Mumbai Police files charge sheet against ex-Religare chair Rashmi Saluja, 3 others in ESOP case
Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police on Monday filed a charge sheet against former Religare Enterprises chairperson Rashmi Saluja and three others in connection with alleged irregularities in the allotment of employee stock options (ESOP) at Care Health Insurance Ltd . A dispute over the ESOP allotment to Saluja at the insurance subsidiary had escalated into a legal battle between Religare's then management and the Burmans who were pursuing to take over the financial services company. The charge sheet filed at a local magistrate's court names Saluja, former Religare finance chief Nitin Aggarwal, ex-group general counsel Nishant Singhal and a Mumbai-based office assistant, Vaibhav Gawli. The EOW investigated the matter after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September last year filed a complaint alleging that Saluja and her colleagues conspired to derail the takeover bid for Religare by misusing ESOP allotments and orchestrating a police complaint filed by the office assistant. Gawli was allegedly promised cash and shares in return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Saluja, who has challenged the EOW's FIR in the Bombay HC, on Monday called the allegations "mala fide and flawed". She told ET: "When I have never met Gawli or ever communicated with him, how could I get him to lodge a complaint against the Burmans? Also, how could ESOPs be treated as proceeds of crime? They were issued by the board and NRC (nomination & remuneration committee)...why aren't they being questioned?" According to investigators, the insurance regulator had rejected Care Health's proposal to issue 22.71 million stock options, valued at more than ₹250 crore, to Saluja. Still, the company's board in August 2022 granted the ESOPs to her at ₹45.32 per share, to be vested in three tranches. In the same meeting, the board also cleared a ₹300 crore rights issue. Live Events The regulator in November 2023 ruled that the ESOPs were granted in violation of sectoral guidelines that cap non-executive director compensation at ₹10 lakh without prior approval.

14 law colleges in Gujarat back in admission process
Ahmedabad: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has conditionally allowed 14 granted law colleges in Gujarat to participate in the admission process after they deposited inspection fees, application fees and penalty charges with the council. With this approval, all 14 colleges will now be included in the centralised LLB admission process conducted through the Gujarat Common Admission System (GCAS). As a result, the state govt has decided to conduct one more admission round, with fresh online registrations beginning on Aug 20. Earlier, these colleges were excluded from the admission process due to non-payment of inspection and penalty fees, as well as a shortage of required number of faculty members. Last year, the issue even reached the high court, where the state initially refused to release the fees. Consequently, only seven to eight colleges could participate in the admission process. This year too, the case continued in the court until the govt assured payment of over Rs 11 crore towards inspection, penalty and related charges on behalf of the colleges. Following this assurance, the BCI granted conditional permission to 14 of the 28 granted law colleges in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The conditional approval requires each college to appoint at least one principal and four faculty members, provide them salaries as per UGC rules and ensure proper infrastructure and library facilities. An affidavit confirming compliance with these requirements must be submitted to the council. Meanwhile, three of the approved colleges have filed fresh petitions in the high court, challenging the aspects of the decision.
