Space & infrastructure constraints: GMDA turns down reversal track plan near Millennium City Centre metro station for new corridor

Time of India2 days ago

Gurgaon: GMDA has turned down a request by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) to widen the central median on Vyapar Kendra Road for the construction of a rear reversal metro track, citing space constraints and the presence of high-tension power infrastructure.
GMRL had sought modifications in the road design of a 350m-long stretch to accommodate the track planned behind the proposed Millennium City Centre metro station.
In a letter written earlier this week, GMDA stated that widening work on the road which has a 0.5-metre central verge was already underway, and expanding the verge to 2.5 metres, as sought by GMRL, was not possible. Further, GMRL was advised to plan the metro route along the utility corridor.
"The road widening project is already underway, and it is not feasible to widen the central verge beyond 0.5m given the site constraint. We have asked GMRL to plan their route along the service area as discussed earlier," a GMDA official said.
The reversal track is a crucial infrastructure element at terminal stations, enabling trains to turn around without obstructing mainline movement.
GMRL had argued that increasing the median width would help avoid the costly and disruptive relocation of three 66kV high-tension towers and allow the agency to save nearly 100 trees that fall within the proposed alignment.

When contacted, a GMRL official said such hindrances were part of large infrastructure projects. "However, we will pursue this matter and find a solution," he stated.
The development comes at a time when the work on MCC–Cyber City corridor is set to begin. Last month, GMRL opened tenders for the first phase of the 28.5km line, and the bids are being evaluated.

Sitharaman highlighted that over 64,000 MUDRA loans and more than 600 Stand-Up India loans have been sanctioned in Ladakh, with Leh district accounting for a significant share. Live Events Public sector banks have shown increased credit activity in the region, with total loan sanctions rising steadily over the last two financial years, she said. The minister commended the expansion of financial infrastructure in Ladakh, with over 500 banking touchpoints and increasing deployment of banking correspondents. She also stressed the need to anchor development in local identity, citing recent initiatives such as the recognition of local languages under the Ladakh Official Languages Regulation Act and the conferring of classical language status to Pali as the most ancient Buddhist texts exist in the language, reflecting the region's rich heritage. She underlined that the Union government is committed to improving access to education in the region. The first-ever cluster university in the Ladakh region (University of Ladakh) was inaugurated in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sindhu Central University has been established to provide quality higher education, she said. On the government's commitment to the preservation and promotion of local customs and traditions, Sitharaman said the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa has been set up to promote the Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine. She also spoke about the government's other initiatives, such as the lifting of a decade-long ban on the export and the GI tagging of Ladakh's Raktsey Karpo apricots, followed by GI tags for Ladakh's Pashmina wool, Shingskos (wood carving), and seabuckthorn products. Sitharaman further outlined the progress made in infrastructure, digital connectivity, and renewable energy, including the BharatNet rollout, mobile network expansion, and green hydrogen projects. The statement said the event brought together public sector banks, NABARD and financial institutions to deepen financial access, especially for the underserved sections, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women entrepreneurs and remote communities.

JNU puts its digital future on fast track with 11cr e-learning centre

New Delhi: What began in a small, soundproof room equipped with basic audio-visual tools for online lessons is now set to become a full-fledged Special Centre for E-Learning at Jawaharlal Nehru University . The university has earmarked nearly 11 crore to develop the new infrastructure. After years of deliberation, the project is finally taking shape. The plan to set up this centre was approved by JNU's executive council several years ago, but it was only in 2024 that the university established a makeshift recording facility to begin offering MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). With formal infrastructure now in the pipeline, the university is preparing to scale up its capacity for digital education in a more structured and sustainable manner. Once operational, the centre is expected to enable JNU to offer some of its regular courses online—an expansion that could benefit students from distant regions of the country and abroad. As per current University Grants Commission (UGC) norms, universities can allow their students to obtain up to 40% of their credits through online mode. Currently, Jamia Millia Islamia is the only central university in Delhi that has made it compulsory for their students to obtain up to 40 % credit from online courses offered by SWAYAM platform. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo According to officials, the upcoming facility at JNU will include content creation studios, support for learning management systems (LMS) and virtual classrooms to facilitate the production and delivery of online courses. The Special Centre for E-Learning will be spread over 2,500 square metres. In a move to balance infrastructure expansion with ecological concerns, JNU is also exploring a vertical space-sharing model—an approach that involves housing multiple university centres within the same building. The idea is to reduce land use and limit tree felling during construction. The university is currently considering clubbing the Special Centre for E-Learning with the proposed Incubation Centre under one roof. "The Supreme Court's Central Empowered Committee's clearance has helped us proceed with the plan. To minimise tree felling, we are working on clubbing several centres together. The e-learning centre could be built along with the incubation centre," said B S Balaji, chairperson, Special Centre for E-Learning. The Incubation Centre, estimated at 17.7 crore and planned across 4,000 square metres, aims to support start-ups and innovation on campus through co-working spaces, prototype labs, investor engagement cells, and mentoring support. Officials said that co-locating the two centres is both a spatial and strategic choice, allowing the university to maximise limited construction space while minimising ecological disturbance. This development comes in the wake of a recent clearance by the Supreme Court's Central Empowered Committee, which granted permission to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to construct hostels and academic facilities in a designated green zone on the South Central Ridge, subject to strict environmental safeguards. The committee recommended the use of 2.1 hectares of forested land for the project. According to the approved plan, 27 trees will be felled, and 19 others will be transplanted. As part of the compensatory measures, JNU is required to plant 500 saplings and contribute 5% of the project cost to the Ridge Management Board. Earlier, construction for both centres was expected to begin in July 2025. However, the university now expects to start work by the end of this year, according to chairperson Balaji.

Working with other Tata group firms to assist crash victims' kin: Air India

The solemn process of handing over the mortal remains of the 241 passengers and crew members killed in the Air India crash is currently underway, the airline said on Sunday. Over 400 family members of the deceased have gathered in Ahmedabad, where the airline has stationed teams to assist them. 'Every affected family in Ahmedabad has been assigned at least one caregiver by Air India,' the airline said in a statement posted on X on Sunday evening, adding that it was coordinating with Tata Group companies and government authorities to support the bereaved and facilitate repatriation where required. Air India reiterated that its priority remains extending assistance to the families. 'We have established contact with the next of kin/relatives of all passengers and crew members… Over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by our teams on the ground,' it said. The airline also acknowledged the contribution of multiple government agencies and hospital staff in Ahmedabad. 'We extend our profound gratitude to the Central and State Governments for their unwavering and exceptional support… and our heartfelt appreciation to the faculty, staff, students, and associates of Civil Hospital and Rajasthan Hospital in Ahmedabad for their tireless efforts,' it noted. The crash of Flight AI171, operating a Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London, occurred on Thursday afternoon shortly after take-off. It is one of the deadliest accidents involving an Indian carrier in the last few decades. The airline said it remains 'fully cooperative' with the ongoing investigation and will continue to share updates as verified information becomes available. Friends and Relatives Assistance Centres remain functional at Ahmedabad and Mumbai airports, and Air India has also provided hotline numbers for those seeking information. On Saturday, Air India announced an interim financial assistance of ₹25 lakh (approximately £21,000) for each family of the deceased and the lone survivor. This is in addition to the ₹1 crore (approximately £85,000) financial support announced earlier by Tata Sons. Meanwhile, the airline is conducting one-time safety checks on its entire Boeing 787 fleet as mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These checks are being performed as the aircraft return to India and are cleared for their next operations. 'Nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft have been checked so far. We are on track to complete the process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the regulator's timeline,' the airline said on Saturday evening. It warned that some of the checks may cause longer turnaround times and potential delays, especially on long-haul routes to airports with curfews. A high-level, multidisciplinary committee led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan was constituted on Friday to conduct a comprehensive review of the AI171 crash. The committee includes senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Home Affairs, Gujarat state government, Indian Air Force, Intelligence Bureau, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Unlike the technical probe being carried out by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), this panel is expected to take a holistic view, examining standard operating procedures, safety regulations and emergency response coordination across central and state agencies. It will also liaise with international investigative bodies as needed.
