James Marsters, the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has given a rare glimpse into his friendship with Sarah Michelle Gellar and revealed why 'no one else would have lasted' in the role of Buffy Summers in an exclusive chat with Reach.
Ahead of the eagerly awaited reboot, fans of Buffy are likely to be re-watching the 1997 series, which will see Gellar return as Executive Producer, if all goes according to plan.
In the original series, penned by Joss Whedon, Gellar portrays the lead character Buffy Summers, who must juggle her normal teenage life while battling vampires, demons and other dark forces.
Marsters, who joined the cast in the second series as vampire Spike, quickly became a fan favourite and a mainstay on the show. Even after decades, the stars appear to maintain a close bond, with Marsters taking the opportunity to laud Gellar as the driving force behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
In a heartfelt tribute, he said: "She's amazing, by the way. I really believe that if anyone else would have played Buffy, we never would have lasted seven years.", reports Surrey Live.
"Because we worked up to 20 hours a day and so there's not a lot of sleep happening, and she was in almost every scene.
"I was in about a quarter of the scenes and it turned me to ash," he confessed. "I can't imagine what would have happened to my psyche if I had her workload. I think I might just have had a breakdown around season 5. I mean, anyone really would.
"TV shows normally film for around 12 hours a day and that's long enough, frankly. But Sarah was always there and she never flagged, she was never late, she always had a good attitude, she knew her lines, she was a monster.
"And consequentially, no one else could relax because she was always just so on point. She was amazing," he said again.
Delving into their off-screen camaraderie, he shared details about how they stay in touch, discussing family milestones.
"Sometimes we email each other about our kids and we'll be like, 'Oh they're doing this, they're doing that.'".
"My kids are older than hers so I always beat her," Marsters joked. "She'll say, 'My kids just learned to make brownies, yay!' And I'll say, 'Well my son just got back from China,'" he continued, not concealing his amusement.
Speaking of the series' revival, he expressed: "It's good because I think the world needs Buffy Summers. The world needs that message maybe more than ever."
Keen not to spill any secrets regarding the forthcoming reboot, he made clear: "I'm not allowed to talk about any of it!".
"I'm trying to thread the needle here..." he conveyed. "But what I will say is that at the beginning of every show we said, 'For every generation there's a new slayer.'".
"And that was a promise that we never really made good on, and I think that it's high time someone did."

Hugh Grant's 'best film' is now available to watch for free on the BBC
A Hugh Grant classic from the 1990s is now available A beloved Hugh Grant rom-com has just become available on BBC iPlayer, offering viewers the chance to fall in love with the classic all over again for free, reports Surrey Live. Released in 1994, amid the golden era of British romantic comedies, the film was penned by renowned screenwriter Richard Curtis. Hugh Grant, who was a fresh-faced 32 year old teetering on the edge of quitting his acting career, found the script transformative and took on the leading role that would define his future. His performance turned him into a household name in Hollywood and opened the door to an eclectic mix of roles ranging from the American horror flick Heretic to the family favourite Paddington. One particularly impressed cinema-goer shared on Rotten Tomatoes: "This is absolutely the best film of Hugh Grant's career." One viewer reflected: "Simply a charming movie. It gives you a slice of life about love and relationships and makes you realise that it is never too late to go for the person you love amidst all missed opportunities in the past." An additional admirer remarked: "This film still holds up. Grant is at his absolute peak of charm before he reinvented smarm, Scott Thomas is divine, as and MacDowell's performance is surprisingly great on rewatch. And it includes one of the all time great gay moments in film history. No spoilers. "Richard Curtis is a godsend to modern romantic comedy fans because he is one of the few artists still able to get films produced within this genre and to write pretty funny screenplays too," praised another cinema-goer. Four Weddings and a Funeral was an absolute smash when it hit cinemas, starring Hugh Grant as the bashful Charles who falls head over heels for the lively American Carrie, played by Andie MacDowell. The film traced the tumultuous journey to love for Charles and Carrie, set against the backdrop of his friends' own romantic escapades. Boasting a stellar ensemble cast, Four Weddings and a Funeral featured the likes of Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow, James Fleet, Rowan Atkinson, David Haig, and Anna Chancellor. It's rumoured that writer Richard Curtis drew inspiration for the screenplay from his personal encounters at weddings, including a proposition he declined, only to regret it later. The partnership between Grant and Curtis on Four Weddings and a Funeral marked the start of a fruitful collaboration, which continued with hits like Notting Hill in 1999, Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001, and Love Actually in 2003. Their collective efforts helped catapult British romantic comedies onto the world stage, setting a high bar that many subsequent films have struggled to reach. Just last year, Grant had the honour of presenting Curtis with an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, a nod to the writer's impressive body of work. Before presenting the award, Grant quipped: "[My agent] sent me this very good script and it had a great part and it was called Four Weddings and a Funeral." I went to the audition and, frankly, I was rather good because the director Mike Newell liked me and wanted me and the producer liked me and wanted me and the money people wanted me. ""The only person who didn't want me and, in fact, took such an instant violent dislike to me, that he did everything in his power to stop me getting the part, was the writer, and it is this a***hole who we are going to honour tonight." His joke had the audience, including Curtis, in fits of laughter. Most recently, Grant reprised his iconic role as Daniel Cleaver for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, marking a return to romcoms.

Buffy's Eliza Dushku reveals milestone in shock new career nearly 10 years after walking away from Hollywood
Eliza Dushku graduated with her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Friday, June 6. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, 44, shared a video clip of her receiving her degree on stage and walking off with it. She also shared several photos to her Instagram Stories including one photo posing with her classmates all looking very happy to be done with their studies. 'Graduating with my master's degree (!!) feels like more than an achievement—it feels like a deep calling realized,' her caption began. 'True growth, energy, and passion—manifested. After nearly a decade of inner work and building a new life, I'm so grateful for this moment in time. 'To my highest self—for taking this wild leap away from everything I knew and making it happen. To my boys + ♥️—for the little sacrifices made & love you gave, each day to honor and support this dream.' She then went on to thank her 'family, friends—new and old—my colleagues/classmates, professors/teachers, and community.' 'I give thanks: for rooting me on, encouraging me day in and day out, and affording me the grace, strength, and space to step fully into these past years of clinical training. 'Today, I stand grounded and ready to support others on their journeys of becoming—through self-discovery, healing, and transformation. 'The connectedness I feel in holding safe, compassionate space for those who seek the undertaking is such lifeblood now,' her caption concluded. The post also featured a photo of her young kids' handwritten notes, which read 'Good Job Mommy' and 'I Love You Mom.' Alongside her husband, real estate developer Peter Palandjian, Eliza is funding groundbreaking research and clinical trials on the potential of psychedelics, according to 2024 interview in Boston Magazine. 'I had the means to shift directions and choose a course in my life that focused on healing myself so that I could help heal others. I would be remiss if I didn't now share the transformation and the peace and the passion that I have,' Dushku said. 'This is just absolutely so clearly my real calling, my real purpose,' she continued at the time. Dushku hasn't been seen on screen since 2017, when she appeared in Netflix's The Saint and played J.P. Nunnelly in CBS's Bull. That year, she stepped away from Hollywood after accusing her Bull co-star Michael Weatherly of sexual harassment. In the wake of the allegations, which Weatherly has denied, Dushku was written out of the show and told that her role as a series regular had been abruptly canceled. Mediation with CBS resulted in the network agreeing to pay Dushku a confidential settlement of $9.5million - roughly the amount she stood to earn if kept on the show for four seasons. Weatherly apologized for his behavior toward Dushku in a statement to the Times, saying: 'During the course of taping our show, I made some jokes mocking some lines in the script. 'When Eliza told me that she wasn't comfortable with my language and attempt at humor, I was mortified to have offended her and immediately apologized. 'After reflecting on this further, I better understand that what I said was both not funny and not appropriate and I am sorry and regret the pain this caused Eliza.' Dushku first rose to fame in 1998 when she was cast as Faith, the rebellious Slayer, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her standout role as Faith, which she portrayed until 2003, earned her a devoted fanbase and solidified her status as a rising star in Hollywood. Dushku also starred in the hit cheerleading film Bring It On (2000), which became a cult classic. In her personal life, Eliza married Peter in 2018, and the couple has since welcomed two children. The family has since made a home in Boston, Eliza's birthplace, where they are enjoying life away from Hollywood.
