Ex-India Star Joins R Ashwin, Gives 'Big' Take On Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Snub
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed his disbelief over the 'surprise' exclusion of batter Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Iyer's omission from the 15-member contingent, as well as the five-man reserves, has sparked a huge debate in the fraternity. Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the first ex-cricketers to have called out BCCI on Iyer's exclusion, calling the decision "sad" and "unfair". Similarly, Azharuddin, too, was surprised not to see Iyer's name on the list. Taking to social media platform X, Azharudding wrote: "Shreyas Iyer left out of the squad. Big surprise" Shreyas Iyer left out of the squad. Big surprise. #AsiaCup2025 @ShreyasIyer15 — Mohammed Azharuddin (@azharflicks) August 19, 2025 Speaking on his omission, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "With regards to Shreyas, you'll have to tell who he can replace. It is again, no fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that at the moment, you can just pick 15. He's got to wait for his chance." Shreyas was India's highest run-getter and overall second-highest run-getter in CT 2025, with 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, with two fifties and a best score of 79. He concluded his run in IPL 2025 as the sixth-highest run-getter, after garnering 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, at a strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. His best score was 97*. Despite being overlooked for the shortest format, Iyer is set to be handed a major responsibility by the BCCI. According to sources, Iyer is leading the race to become India's next ODI captain. The selectors see Iyer as a long-term replacement for Rohit Sharma, as far as captaincy in concerned. The decision on India's ODI team could come as soon as after the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played from September 9-28 in the UAE. In addition, Test skipper Shubman Gill might also replace Suryakumar Yadav as full-time captain of the T20I team.

Sports and politics: on India, Pakistan and sports
Ever since its inception in 1984, the Asia Cup has often been caught in the diplomatic crossfire which engulfs all talk pertaining to India and Pakistan. The imminent one commencing in the United Arab Emirates on September 9 is no exception. A fiery debate has commenced over whether India should play against Pakistan following the Pahalgam massacre and the resultant Operation Sindoor exercise across the border. The decision not to play bilaterals, but okaying tournaments, makes no sense. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India deals with the political slugfest, the Indian team was announced at a rain-battered Mumbai on Tuesday. With Suryakumar Yadav leading the unit, the surprise quotient rose when Test skipper Shubman Gill was roped in as the vice-captain. He had done a similar venture earlier under Suryakumar before being shunted out. Gill, who rose to Test captaincy in the wake of Rohit Sharma's retirement, had a spectacular yield in the recent series in England, amassing 754 runs and leading his men to a 2-2 draw. The recency bias over his form swayed the selectors led by Ajit Agarkar and obviously coach Gautam Gambhir must have given his input. It could also be a hint about Gill becoming an all-format captain in the near future, while for now he leads in Tests, Suryakumar in T20Is and Rohit remains the ODI skipper. A Test captain, often seen as the first among equals when it comes to leading across formats, playing second fiddle to another star in T20Is does look awkward. However, Indian cricket has had various twists and turns when it comes to the leadership hot seat. At one point, Virat Kohli was leading in Tests, ODIs and T20Is before Rohit was gradually made the captain in the shorter formats and being promoted in Tests too. In the past, be it Mohammed Azharuddin or M.S. Dhoni, they had to deal with a string of former captains under their watch. Among the rest, with Rishabh Pant ruled out due to injury, Sanju Samson may get a chance to reiterate his credentials both with the bat and wicket-keeping gloves. All through his career, Samson has been in the shadows as Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Pant and Ishan Kishan, were the preferred stumpers. It also remains to be seen if Jitesh Sharma would be fast-tracked bypassing Samson. The squad also gets the booster shot of having Jasprit Bumrah in the fold, and he along with Suryakumar, Gill and Hardik Pandya, will form the nucleus of the team. As defending champion, India gets another opportunity to reiterate its continental dominance even as the face-off against Pakistan and the omission of Shreyas Iyer will dominate prime-time discourse.

Rahul, Siraj In Duleep Trophy? BCCI Cracks Whip On States For Excluding Them
Last Updated: BCCI domestic cricket, Duleep Trophy, Indian cricket team selection, state cricket associations, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, central contracts The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has cracked the whip on the state associations for not selecting the available national stars, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar, among others, for the upcoming 2025 Duleep Trophy season. In an email to all state associations, the BCCI's general manager of cricket operations, Abey Kuruvilla, reminded them of the need to uphold the competition's prestige by selecting the best available players. It follows the BCCI's orders from last season, making playing domestic cricket mandatory for all international stars during their breaks from the Indian team, as a condition for getting recognised by central contracts. 'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked," Kuruvilla wrote in the email, as quoted by The Indian Express. The Duleep Trophy is a Zonal tournament with six zones. Teams are picked by Zonal selectors who are picked from the state associations. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason," he added. The Duleep Trophy begins on August 28. It's unclear whether South Zone picks an updated squad. The report said that some zonal selectors are hesitant about picking international players because they believe the tournament is a good chance to give opportunities to those who work hard in Ranji Trophy all year along. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
