Surprisingly, Vadodara will host its first men's international game in more than 15 years. The tour will kick off with the first ODI on January 11 at the newly inaugurated Kotambi Stadium. The stadium has already hosted three international games featuring India and West Indies Women's teams. The stadium also hosted six matches during the 2025 Women's Premier league (WPL).
Vadodara hosting a game means their home grown superstar Hardik Pandya will finally play an international game infront of his home crowd. Hardik received a warm wlecome by the Vadodara crowd after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. Meanwhile, New Zealand were the same team that last played an international game at Vadodara at the Reliance Stadium in 2010.

The New Zealand cricket team is set to tour India in January 2026 for a series of One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The tour kicks off with a three-match ODI series, starting on Sunday, January 11, 2026, in Baroda at 1:30 PM. The second ODI will be played on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in Rajkot, also at 1:30 PM, followed by the third and final ODI in Indore on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the same time.
Following the ODI series, a five-match T20I series will commence. The first T20I is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in Nagpur, with a start time of 7:00 PM. Raipur will host the second T20I on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 7:00 PM. The third T20I will be played in Guwahati on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at 7:00 PM. The penultimate match, the fourth T20I, is set for Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Vizag at 7:00 PM. The tour concludes with the fifth and final T20I on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Trivandrum, also starting at 7:00 PM.
India and New Zealand last played an ODI at the Champions Trophy final 2025 where the Men in Blue defeated the Kiwis by four wickets claiming the CT trophy for the second time. Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the Man of the Match in the game.

Ever since its inception in 1984, the Asia Cup has often been caught in the diplomatic crossfire which engulfs all talk pertaining to India and Pakistan. The imminent one commencing in the United Arab Emirates on September 9 is no exception. A fiery debate has commenced over whether India should play against Pakistan following the Pahalgam massacre and the resultant Operation Sindoor exercise across the border. The decision not to play bilaterals, but okaying tournaments, makes no sense. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India deals with the political slugfest, the Indian team was announced at a rain-battered Mumbai on Tuesday. With Suryakumar Yadav leading the unit, the surprise quotient rose when Test skipper Shubman Gill was roped in as the vice-captain. He had done a similar venture earlier under Suryakumar before being shunted out. Gill, who rose to Test captaincy in the wake of Rohit Sharma's retirement, had a spectacular yield in the recent series in England, amassing 754 runs and leading his men to a 2-2 draw. The recency bias over his form swayed the selectors led by Ajit Agarkar and obviously coach Gautam Gambhir must have given his input. It could also be a hint about Gill becoming an all-format captain in the near future, while for now he leads in Tests, Suryakumar in T20Is and Rohit remains the ODI skipper. A Test captain, often seen as the first among equals when it comes to leading across formats, playing second fiddle to another star in T20Is does look awkward. However, Indian cricket has had various twists and turns when it comes to the leadership hot seat. At one point, Virat Kohli was leading in Tests, ODIs and T20Is before Rohit was gradually made the captain in the shorter formats and being promoted in Tests too. In the past, be it Mohammed Azharuddin or M.S. Dhoni, they had to deal with a string of former captains under their watch. Among the rest, with Rishabh Pant ruled out due to injury, Sanju Samson may get a chance to reiterate his credentials both with the bat and wicket-keeping gloves. All through his career, Samson has been in the shadows as Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Pant and Ishan Kishan, were the preferred stumpers. It also remains to be seen if Jitesh Sharma would be fast-tracked bypassing Samson. In an email to all state associations, the BCCI's general manager of cricket operations, Abey Kuruvilla, reminded them of the need to uphold the competition's prestige by selecting the best available players. It follows the BCCI's orders from last season, making playing domestic cricket mandatory for all international stars during their breaks from the Indian team, as a condition for getting recognised by central contracts. 'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked," Kuruvilla wrote in the email, as quoted by The Indian Express. The Duleep Trophy is a Zonal tournament with six zones. Teams are picked by Zonal selectors who are picked from the state associations. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason," he added. The Duleep Trophy begins on August 28. It's unclear whether South Zone picks an updated squad.
