Auburn retiring Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey on Oct. 11
The ceremony will take place on Oct. 11 during the Tigers' game against rival Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Newton, 36, will be just the fourth player so honored at Auburn, joining fellow Heisman winners Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Pat Sullivan (No. 7) along with record-setting receiver Terry Beasley (No. 88).
No Auburn player has worn the No. 2 since Newton led the unbeaten Tigers (14-0) to a BCS national championship and won the Heisman in 2010.
"Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said in a statement. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!"
Newton passed for 2,854 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions and ran for 1,473 yards and 20 scores in his lone season at Auburn. In addition to the Heisman Trophy, he was rewarded with the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Manning, Davey O'Brien and AP Player of the Year awards.
He became the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers and played 11 seasons, winning NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2015 and earning three Pro Bowl selections.

De'Andre Moore, CJ Baxter and Tre Wisner were named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watchlist. The trio could join D'Onta Foreman as the only Longhorns to win the award in history. Award watchlists from around the country continue to roll in, but this one has deep Texas ties. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is a prestigious award given out every year to the best offensive player in the country with Texas ties. The name sake is obviously legendary Texas RB and Heisman winner, Earl Campbell. A trio of Longhorns made their way onto the watchlist this year. DeAndre Moore, CJ Baxter and Quintrevion Wisner made the list and hope to join D'Onta Foreman as Longhorns to win the award. Ashton Jeanty took home the award last year with his over 2,000 yard campaign for Boise State. As you can imagine, it is filled with some of the best college football players in the country, given the talent level of Texas high school recruiting. Texas will face off against a couple QBs on the watchlist in DJ Lagway, Taylen Green and John Mateer this year. De'Andre Moore might have a better chance to win this than some would think. Ryan Wingo is the clear WR1 on the team, but Moore has the ability to put up incredible numbers and play both in the slot and outside this year. He's been taking a step forward every year and he's set up to have a true breakout campaign this year. The running back duo might just get in each other's way to win this one, but it should benefit the Longhorns in the long run. Quintrevion Wisner will likely lead the way early in the season, as CJ Baxter all the way up to game speed. Once CJ gets back to 100%, which sounds like it'll be soon, this will be a clean split. The numbers might not be insane for either, but as a duo, they can put up some incredible stats. Winning this would be an incredible honor for any of the three Longhorns, because of the tie to a Longhorn legend like Earl Campbell. Also, if they were to win, the hope is they would have a scheduling nightmare on their hands. The award was presented in Tyler, Texas on January 21st, 2026. The national championship is in Miami, Florida on January 20th, 2026. The hope is De'Andre Moore, CJ Baxter or Quintrevion Wisner have a happy flight back from Miami into Dallas to get their second trophy in as many days.

Nick Sirianni compares John Metchie to a player Eagles fans will appreciate The weather is cooling somewhat, and thank goodness. Philadelphia Eagles head coach spent about 14 minutes with the local media. He complimented the recently promoted Kevin Patullo. Discussions about the offensive line and swing tackles were on the menu. As expected, he skated past whether or not A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith's injuries would prevent them from Week 1 action. It's hard to understand why anyone still wastes time asking such questions. He's never going to give a straightforward answer. Coach did, however, pipe up when the conversation briefly shifted to John Metchie. Current Eagles stars from the Alabama Crimson Tide have that effect on the conversation. Having been allowed to discuss the team's new wideout, Coach Sirianni morphed into the usually expressive guy we have all gotten to know and love. Okay, let's make sure we are all on the same sheet of music. Though he mentioned DeVonta Smith's name at the end of his thought there, we all should have figured out that's who he was referencing when stating these guys must have been "coached by the same guys." Something tells us Landon Dickerson didn't run a ton of posts and out routes. During the 2020 college football season, Smith went off and won the Heisman Trophy, among other postseason honors. Metchie was the second leading receiver on that year's squad. Also, the only four Eagles on the current team who played with Metchie during his time in Tuscaloosa were Smith, Cameron Latu, Byron Young, and Landon Dickerson. It isn't hard to figure out where Coach got his information from. So far, Metchie has hauled in 40 receptions for 412 yards, and he has reached the end zone once. On this roster, he'll be lucky to notch those numbers in two seasons with Philadelphia. He won't be getting the ball much. Still, there aren't many NFL stars on any team who can tap their toes on the sideline as well or better than Smith. If Metchie has that level of talent, more excitement should grow about his acquisition. In the meantime, while we sort all of that out, the Eagles' wide receiver room is undoubtedly better than it was at this time a week ago.

The Florida Gators ended the 2024 season on a high note after winning their last four games and securing an 8-5 record. The focus is on improving on that record in 2025, as the Gators enter year four of the Billy Napier experience. While Napier appears to have gotten over the hump in Gainesville, On3's Andy Staples thought the injuries could result in Napier's firing on a recent episode of "The Paul Finebaum Show." Lagway has had some concerning injury issues pop up this offseason. Most recently, he had a boot on at the beginning of fall camp due to a minor calf injury. The injury did keep Lagway from throwing in the offseason, however. "They are a very different team when he's the starting quarterback and when he's not," Staples said. "So, this is a potential playoff team when DJ Lagway is healthy. If he's not healthy, it could get everybody fired. That's a harsh way of looking at it, but that is the truth." He also missed time because of a hamstring injury in 2024, which he suffered against the Georgia Bulldogs. Lagway did not play in the following game against the Texas Longhorns because of it. Staples is not the only one to be concerned about Lagway's health, as ESPN's Matt Barrie also sounded the alarm. While Lagway is the starting quarterback now, another former Florida gunslinger was recently in the spotlight. Tim Tebow was featured as one of the best five-star recruits of all time by Rivals, coming in at No. 4. Tebow won the Heisman in 2007 and was a part of Florida's 2006 and 2008 national championship teams.
