Rajasthan Royals' Badale accuses former co-owner Raj Kundra of blackmail in UK court
London-based venture capitalist Manoj Badale and his company Emerging Media Ventures are suing businessman Raj Kundra at London's High Court for allegedly breaching a 2019 confidential settlement agreement.
The case centres on Kundra's former shares in Rajasthan Royals, winner of 2008's inaugural IPL which is now cricket's richest tournament with a brand value of $12 billion.
Badale's lawyer Adam Speker said Kundra, who is married to Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, had threatened to report serious allegations to Indian authorities in a 'blackmail attempt'.
Kundra, however, says he has been told information about the claimants and his lawyer William McCormick that, if that is not true, 'in due course it will be exposed'.
Kundra had to forfeit his 11.7% stake after being found guilty in 2015 of betting on IPL games in a scandal which led to the Rajasthan Royals being suspended for two years, Speker said.

He added in court filings that Kundra emailed Badale 'out of the blue' last month, alleging he had been 'misled and defrauded of the rightful value of my 11.7% stake'.
The email to Badale said Kundra had filed a complaint with Indian authorities and threatened to make a report to India's Cricket Board (BCCI).
Kundra added, however, that he was willing to discuss a deal involving 'the restoration of my original equity or compensation reflecting the true and current valuation of the Rajasthan Royals franchise'.

Speker said Kundra also messaged disgraced IPL founder Lalit Modi this month, saying Badale 'did not realise cheating me of the true value would cost him dearly'.
Badale and his Emerging Media Ventures, which holds a 65% stake in Rajasthan Royals, obtained an interim injunction against Kundra on May 30, preventing Kundra from breaching the settlement agreement by making disparaging statements.
Kundra's lawyer McCormick said Kundra accepted the injunction should continue until a full trial of the lawsuit.
'It is not an admission that anything improper has been done or is being threatened,' McCormick said.

Axar Patel deserves ‘explanation' for T20I vice-captaincy being snatched: 'Hope he didn't come to know in press'
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif reckons Axar Patel is owed an 'explanation' after the T20I vice-captaincy was snatched from him and given to Shubman Gill for the upcoming eight-team Asia Cup. The All India Men's Senior Selection Committee on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member squad for the tournament, beginning September 9. Axar, who was the vice-captain for India's last T20I assignment—the five-match series against England earlier this year—is no longer Suryakumar Yadav's deputy, as the all-important position has now been given to Gill. Axar Patel is no longer the vice-captain in T20Is. (PTI) Gill, who is the Test captain, makes his way to India's T20I setup after more than a year. He last played a T20I in 2024 against Sri Lanka. However, he was never dropped from the team as he was rested to keep him fit for the Test and ODI assignments. It must be mentioned that Gill was the vice-captain in the series against Sri Lanka last year, and Axar was only elevated to this role in the 25-year-old's absence. Also Read: India's squad for Asia Cup 2025: Ajit Agarkar's 5 big announcements that threw pleasant surprises amid some tough calls However, Kaif believes Axar has done no wrong and deserves to know what really happened to his leadership role. He also hopes that the selectors and Axar communicated about the vice-captaincy being taken away. 'I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance, and he didn't come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong, so he deserves an explanation,' Kaif wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Axar Patel has played 71 T20Is, scoring 535 runs and taking 71 wickets. The left-handed batter is the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, under his leadership, the franchise failed to make the playoffs this year. Aakash Chopra sympathises with Axar Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra also sympathised with Axar, saying it is a bit unfortunate that the all-rounder lost his vice-captaincy to Gill. Speaking on JioHotstar after the squad was announced, Chopra said, "I also feel that it was a little unfair to Axar that he is suddenly not the vice-captain any more. But that's my opinion. Team looks fine though." The selectors left Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the Asia Cup squad. The latter made it to the reserves list. However, Shreyas wasn't that lucky. Jasprit Bumrah is also back in India's squad while Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two frontline wicket-keepers in the squad. Gill is all set to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. What happens to Sanju Samson, only time will tell.

India clarifies ‘no change in position' on Taiwan after Chinese readout attributes ‘part of China' remark to Jaishankar
India on Tuesday denied Beijing's claim that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had described Taiwan as 'a part of China' during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, asserting that there has been 'no change in India's position' on the matter. The clarification followed the release of the Chinese foreign ministry's readout of the Jaishankar–Wang meeting on Monday evening in New Delhi. According to the translation, Beijing attributed to Jaishankar the following remarks: 'The relationship between India and China remains stable, cooperative and forward-looking, which is in line with the interests of both countries. Taiwan is a part of China.' According to New Delhi's account, the Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan, to which India responded that its approach remained unchanged. India underscored that, like many other nations, it engages with Taiwan in areas such as economic, technological and cultural cooperation, which will continue. 'The Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan. The Indian side underlined that there was no change in its position on this issue. It pointed out that, like the rest of the world, India had a relationship with Taiwan that focuses on economic, technological and cultural ties and that this would continue. The Indian side noted that China also cooperates with Taiwan in these very domains.' the press release read. India endorsed the 'One-China' policy in the past, but the phrase has not appeared in any bilateral document since 2011. While New Delhi does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, both sides have steadily built connections over the past three decades. In 1995, India set up the India–Taipei Association (ITA) in Taiwan to promote trade, tourism and cultural exchanges, while Taiwan opened its Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in Delhi. Last year, the two sides signed a migration and mobility agreement, paving the way for Indian workers to be employed in diverse sectors on the island. Trade cooperation has been expanding, with New Delhi particularly interested in Taiwan's expertise in semiconductors, a sector critical to global supply chains. Taiwan, a self-ruled island of more than 23 million people, produces nearly 70% of the world's semiconductors, including the most advanced chips used in smartphones, data centres, defence technology and artificial intelligence. Beijing, however, continues to pressure countries to refrain from any official recognition of Taiwan, urging India repeatedly to reaffirm its commitment to the One-China principle. In talks with Wang, Jaishankar raised India's concerns with regard to mega dam construction in lower reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo river, informed MEA. China's construction of dams in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo river, which flows into India as the Brahmaputra, has raised concerns over potential ecological disruption and transboundary water security. New Delhi has consistently sought greater transparency from Beijing on such hydropower projects, emphasising the need for prior information-sharing and cooperative management of shared river systems. India strongly underlined its concerns over the construction of a dam on Brahmaputra river and raised the issue of cross-border terrorism with China. On 8 August, in a written response to a query in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said the project was first made public as far back as 1986 and since then, preparations have been underway in China. The government of India has "taken note of reports about commencement of construction of mega dam project by China on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in Tibet," he said. The government "carefully monitors" all developments relating to the Brahmaputra River, including plans by China to develop hydropower projects, and "takes necessary measures to protect our interests, including preventive and corrective measures to safeguard life and livelihood of Indian citizens residing in the downstream areas", he said.
