Sun Life's second-quarter profit rises on strong Asia unit performance
"Sun Life's Q2 results were driven by record underlying net income in Asia with strong protection business growth, higher wealth management and investment earnings," CEO Kevin Strain said in a statement.
Underlying net income from the company's Asia operations helped lift overall earnings to C$716 million ($520.88 million), or C$1.26 per share, for the quarter ended June 30, up from C$646 million, or C$1.11 per share, a year earlier.
However, underlying earnings from its individual protection business declined 10% to C$299 million.
Underlying earnings from its group health and protection business rose 7% to C$326 million, while individual protection earnings fell 10% to C$299 million. Wealth and asset management income was flat at C$455 million.
The Toronto-based company reported underlying EPS of C$1.79, compared with analysts' average estimate of C$1.78 per share, according to LSEG data.
Underlying earnings from Sun Life Financial's group health and protection businesses, which provide insurance policies to employer and government plan members, rose 7% to C$326 million.
Sun Life also said David Healy will become President of Sun Life U.S. effective Sept. 1, 2025, succeeding Dan Fishbein, who plans to retire in March 2026.
Shares of Sun Life have declined about 1% this year, while rival Manulife (MFC.TO), opens new tab, which also reported strong Asia growth this week, is down 6.4%.

Trump Media to broadcast GB News on US streaming platform Truth+
The Trump family media company has partnered with GB News to broadcast the channel on its US streaming platform, Truth+. Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), which operates social media app Truth Social, the streaming platform Truth+, and the FinTech brand announced on Friday that it will add GB News to its list of available channels – making the UK broadcaster accessible to most countries globally, including the US. GB News, which has hosted rightwing commentators such as Nigel Farage, will be offered with the free basic package on Truth+, and can be accessed through multiple devices and platforms including iOS, Android, Web, Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire. This new alliance between TMTG and GB News comes as the US president continues to criticise the mainstream media, filing lawsuits against giants such as Rupert Murdoch, as well as broadcasters and smaller newspapers. Earlier this year, Trump claimed that the US media was full of 'radical-left monsters', who are guilty of 'illegal' reporting. More recently, White House communications director, Steven Cheung, has said that 'liberal media' is spreading 'fake news' in relation to reports claiming that Trump's name appears in US justice department files about Jeffrey Epstein. Turkey welcomes strategic transit corridor after Azerbaijan-Armenia peace deal
ANKARA, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Turkey on Saturday welcomed a peace accord between Azerbaijan and Armenia and said it hoped a planned strategic transit corridor, which could boost exports of energy and other resources through the South Caucasus, will open soon. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a U.S.-brokered peace accord on Friday during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump that also included exclusive U.S. development rights to a transport corridor through Armenia, linking Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan, an Azerbaijani enclave that borders Baku's ally Turkey. The transit corridor that would pass close to the border with Iran, will be named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, and known by the acronym TRIPP, and will be operated under Armenia law. NATO member Turkey has strongly backed Azerbaijan in its conflicts with Armenia but has pledged to restore ties with Yerevan after it signs a final peace deal with Baku. Speaking in Egypt, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the corridor could "link Europe with the depths of Asia via Turkey," and it would be "a very beneficial development." The peace agreement could transform the South Caucasus, an energy-producing region neighbouring Russia, Europe, Turkey and Iran that is criss-crossed by oil and gas pipelines but riven by closed borders - including between Turkey and Armenia - and longstanding ethnic conflicts. Iran welcomed the agreement "as an important step toward lasting regional peace", but warned against any foreign intervention near its borders that could "undermine the region's security and lasting stability".
