Pakistan calls China's development model ‘source of inspiration' amid talks on next CPEC phase
CPEC is a flagship initiative of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched in 2013 to develop infrastructure and connectivity between Gwadar Port in Pakistan and China's Xinjiang region.
The first phase focused on power generation and road networks, while the upcoming second phase aims to center on industrialization, business-to-business cooperation and technological development.
Iqbal is currently in Beijing to push for deeper economic integration and bilateral collaboration between the two countries.
'China's development model remains a source of inspiration for Pakistan,' he said during the meeting, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
'Learning from China's experience, Pakistan is moving toward building an export-oriented and technology-driven economy.'
Iqbal recalled how CPEC was transformed from 'a paper plan into a multibillion-dollar reality.'
He also lauded China's support for Pakistan during the recent military standoff with India, saying the Pakistani people 'take pride in the everlasting friendship' with Beijing.
'Pakistan-China friendship continues to grow stronger with every passing day and changing circumstances,' he added.
The minister emphasized that the next phase of CPEC would prioritize industrial and technological collaboration between the two countries.
He pointed to Pakistan's URAAN initiative, a government program aimed at advancing economic, social, and institutional stability through people-centered reforms.
He noted that under the initiative, the government plans to develop a skilled and capable workforce aligned with the needs of CPEC Phase II.
Iqbal said enhanced business-to-business cooperation between the two countries would help further expand the scope of the corridor and stimulate industrial growth in Pakistan.
Vice Foreign Minister Sun reaffirmed China's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Pakistan in various sectors and expressed support for Islamabad's development goals.
He described Pakistan's economic reform efforts as a promising path toward stability and self-reliance.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have signed agreements in the fields of politics, economy, culture and other vital sectors, Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday, as Tehran and Islamabad eye raising their bilateral trade to $10 billion. Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan's capital on Saturday on a two-day state visit to increase bilateral trade and strengthen relations between the two countries. Pakistan and Iran have remained at odds over instability along their shared, porous border that even led to a missile exchange between them last year. Both countries, however, were quick to move to ease tensions. Iran and Pakistan have attempted to forge closer economic and investment ties through border markets and trade links in recent years. 'My deep belief is that we can easily, in a short time, increase the volume of our trade relations from the current $3 billion to the projected goal of $10 billion,' Pezeshkian told reporters during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and high-level delegations from both countries in attendance. 'We reached good agreements in the political, economic, commercial, and cultural fields during this visit,' he said. The Iranian president said Islamabad and Tehran had signed 'important documents' that would facilitate and promote bilateral ties in commercial, cultural, tourism, transportation and scientific and educational exchanges between the two nations. 'The development of transit routes, railroad and sea routes, the development and equipping of border markets facilitating trade and the establishment of joint free economic zones, are serious needs in the relations between the two countries,' Pezeshkian noted. 'And we had constructive discussions on those issues.' Pakistan and Iran routinely trade blame for not tackling militancy in their shared border areas. The Iranian president said the issue had come up in talks between both sides. 'Also, given the threats from terrorist groups in border areas, increasing cooperation between the two countries to ensure border security and the peace and comfort of citizens in border cities was emphasized,' he said. The Iranian president condemned Israel for its military operations in Palestine, Syria and other areas of the Middle East, calling for the cessation of hostilities in Gaza. Sharif welcomed the Iranian president to Pakistan and said the two sides held fruitful discussions on culture, religion, history and geography. He condemned Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear facilities in June, saying there was no justification for the attacks. Both leaders also called for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The Pakistani prime minister hoped the memoranda of understanding signed between Pakistan and Iran would 'soon' convert into agreements. 'Mr. President, today we have signed many MoUs and it is my prayer and your wish that these MoUs become agreements very soon,' Sharif said. 'And it is your wish and mine too that we achieve the target of $10 billion in trade as soon as possible,' he added. He said Iran and Pakistan had the same stance when it came to 'terrorism,' adding that both countries were opposed to it. Sharif vowed that Pakistan and Iran, through partnership and cooperation, would take steps against militants to ensure peace in their border areas.

Russian and Chinese navies carry out artillery and anti-submarine drills in Sea of Japan
The Russian and Chinese navies are carrying out artillery and anti-submarine drills in the Sea of Japan as part of scheduled joint exercises, the Russian Pacific Fleet was quoted as saying on Sunday. The drills are taking place two days after US President Donald Trump said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in 'the appropriate regions' in response to remarks by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. However, they were scheduled well before Trump's action. Interfax news agency quoted the Pacific Fleet as saying Russian and Chinese vessels were moving in a joint detachment including a large Russian anti-submarine ship and two Chinese destroyers. It said diesel-electric submarines from the two countries were also involved, as well as a Chinese submarine rescue ship. The maneuvers are part of exercises titled 'Maritime Interaction-2025' which are scheduled to end on Tuesday. Interfax said Russian and Chinese sailors would conduct artillery firing, practice anti-submarine and air defense missions, and improve joint search and rescue operations at sea. Russia and China, which signed a 'no-limits' strategic partnership shortly before Russia went to war in Ukraine in 2022, conduct regular military exercises to rehearse coordination between their armed forces and send a deterrent signal to adversaries. Trump said his submarine order on Friday was made in response to what he called 'highly provocative' remarks by Russia's Medvedev about the risk of war between the nuclear-armed adversaries. Russia and the United States have by far the biggest nuclear arsenals in the world. It is extremely rare for either country to discuss the deployment and location of its nuclear submarines. China and Russia to hold joint naval exercise near Japan next month
The Chinese military announced Wednesday that it would hold an annual naval exercise and conduct a maritime joint patrol with Russian forces next month. Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said that the Joint Sea 2024 exercise would be held in the air and seas near the Russian port city of Vladivostok which lies across the sea from Japan's west coast. Last year the drill was held off southern China in the South China Sea. The Chinese and Russian governments have deepened their ties in recent years with China providing an economic lifeline to Russia in the face of Western sanctions over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. European leaders asked China again last week to use its influence to pressure Russia to end the war now in its fourth year but there was no sign that Beijing would do so. Japan's Defense Ministry said in an annual report earlier this month that China's growing military cooperation with Russia poses serious security concerns. Zhang said the exercise and patrol are part of an annual cooperation plan and are not aimed at any other country or related to the current international or regional situation. He didn't provide specific dates for the drill or the joint patrol in the Pacific which he said would be the sixth of its kind. Zhang speaking at a monthly press conference criticized ongoing drills that the US Air Force is conducting with Japan and other partners in the western Pacific. 'Resolute Force Pacific' is the largest contingency-response exercise ever conducted by the Air Force in the region according to the US military. 'The US has been blindly flexing muscles in the Asia-Pacific region and attempting to use military drills as a pretext to gang up intimidate and pressure other countries and undermine peace and stability in the region,' Zhang said. The Air Force has said the exercise will train its forces to maintain readiness and execute missions under stress to demonstrate their ability to defend the United States and partner nations in the Pacific.
