Christina Bossinakis, senior editor for the Thoroughbred Daily News and a prominent TV racing personality, has been named the winner of the 2025 Bill Handleman Award for outstanding coverage of last year's NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
First presented in 2012, the Handleman Award honors distinguished media coverage of the $1 million, Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes, Monmouth Park's showcase race. It is presented annually prior to the Haskell.
The award honors the late Bill Handleman, one of New Jersey's top sportswriters for nearly three decades for the Asbury Park Press. Handleman, a fixture at Monmouth Park and a passionate chronicler of the sport, died in June of 2010 at the age of 62.

Bossinakis, who hails from Montreal, Canada, has worked as an on-air racing analyst, as a TV handicapper and paddock reporter, and as a racing TV show host in addition to her role at Thoroughbred Daily News.
She co-authored the book 'Sermon on the Mount' with the late Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
'This means a lot. I've always had a soft spot for Monmouth Park from working there with TVG,' Bossinakis said. 'I have spent a lot of time with the people at Monmouth Park, so it makes it a special honor for me.
'It's nice to feel rewarded when you put your heart and soul into something you love, so I am very appreciative.'
Monmouth Park general manager John Heims called Bossinakis 'the consummate professional.'
'Her knowledge of Thoroughbred racing, both historical and current, never fails to impress,' said Heims. 'In addition to her excellent coverage of last year's Haskell on the Thoroughbred Daily News site, she has excelled in a variety of roles in the racing industry.'
The first recipient of the Handleman Award was Tom Luicci of The Star-Ledger, followed by Steve Edelson of The Asbury Park Press in 2013, Dave Johnson of Sirius XM in 2014, Ed McNamara of Newsday in 2015, Bob Ehalt of ESPN.com and Bloodhorse in 2016, Tom Cassidy of TVG.com in 2017, Jim Dunleavy of Daily Racing Form in 2018, Mike Farrell of The Associated Press in 2019, Steve Byk of At the Races With Steve Byk in 2020, Matt Shifman of Horse Racing Nation in 2021, John Brennan of usbets.com in 2022, announcer/TV racing analyst Larry Collmus in 2023 and videographer Carlos Morales of Agentes 305 last year.

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 21 - Bob McAdoo (1981)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 22nd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 21, which has has had a total of 26 players wear the number in the history of the team. The sixth of those players wearing No. 21 played in the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, Hall of Fame big man Bob McAdoo. After ending his college career at UNC, McAdoo was picked up with the second overall selection of the 1972 NBA draft by the (then) Buffalo Braves (now, Boston Celtics - it's a long story). The Greensboro, North Carolina native would play parts of the first five seasons in the NBA with the Braves. He would also have stints with the New York Knicks, Celtics, and Detroit Pistons before signing with New Jersey in 1981. His stay with the team would span just 10 games before he'd be on the move again, this time to the Los Angeles Lakers. During his time suiting up for the Nets, McAdoo wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 9.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Angels slugger Mike Trout is closing in on 400 homers, 1,000 RBIs with aim on the postseason

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mike Trout arrived in Philadelphia in time to catch the unveiling of a new target in the deepest part of the ballpark -- the 2026 All-Star game logo, complete with the Liberty Bell in the center of the design. The Angels slugger has something to aim for in Philly. As a home run target? No, the oversized symbol that celebrates next year's All-Star game is raised well beyond the centerfield wall and out of reach to even Schwarbombs in Ashburn Alley, closer to the retired numbers on the bricks at Citizens Bank Park. As a potential destination for next season? Making the All-Star game is more on the nose for Trout, an 11-time selection who hasn't been picked to play for the American League since 2023. Yet each time Trout plays in Philadelphia, just over 40 miles from the slugger's New Jersey hometown, talk tends to drift from All-Star games, his injuries, his upcoming career milestones -- he's closing in on 400 homers and 1,000 RBIs -- or a rare Angels' push at the postseason, and lands right on the possibility he'll one day suit up for the Phillies. 'I hear it all the time,' Trout said with a laugh outside the Angels' clubhouse on Friday. 'Right now, I'm enjoying myself with this team in here. These guys come to the ballpark every day and play hard. It's hard not for me to see it, because I see it and hear it all the time.' He'll settle at least a crack at the 2026 All-Star Game. 'It would definitely mean a lot,' Trout said. Trout entered the start of a three-game series against the Phillies having the kind of season that has defined most of his last five seasons in California. When he's healthy, he's on. He has a .283 batting average, .433 on-base percentage and .478 slugging percentage with eight home runs and 23 RBIs in 41 games since he came off the injured list on May 30. Otherwise, it's more stints on the IL. This season, he was hampered by a bone bruise on his left knee that cost him time. Trout was the designated hitter on Friday night against the NL East champion Phillies, who could certainly use a right-handed bat with pop in the outfield as they make their own playoff run. He did some light pregame work in the outfield ('get my feet under me') and hoped he'd return to right field in the near future. Trout said his knee did feel 'a lot better' after four days off and off his feet over the All-Star break. 'I'm just happy to be in the lineup, contributing,' he said. 'Years past, it's just come to the ballpark, not be able to at least hit. That's been frustrating, that's been tough.' He again expected a full house of fans from his hometown of Millville, New Jersey, on hand to root him on as the three-time AL MVP started the game with 395 career home runs and 995 career RBIs. 'To think about it, it's just how fast it's going,' Trout said. 'Just trying to enjoy every minute of it. The milestones are awesome. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting them.' Trout would have blown by those numbers years ago had it not been for his injuries that have allowed him play more than 82 games only once since 2019. 'Things happen,' he said. There are no guarantees he'll chip away at those numbers over the weekend -- Trout has never gone deep at Citizens Bank Park. The New Jersey native has kept his ties to the area as he blossomed into one of baseball's great sluggers; his family still lives in the area, he collaborated with Tiger Woods on a new golf course, and yes, the Eagles season-ticket holder still bleeds Kelly green. The Angels were 47-49 headed into Friday, but only four games out of a wild-card spot. Trout played in three career playoff games in 2014. Los Angeles' 47 wins are the most for the franchise at the All-Star break since it had 49 in 2018. 'The team in there right now, we've got a great mindset,' he said. 'We've got a great group in there. We pass the baton at the plate. We're tough outs.' None tougher at his best than Trout. He's trying to become the 20th player in baseball history to hit his first 400 home runs with one franchise. 'This guy is a superstar,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. 'I saw him when he first came up and he hit the ball as far as you could think. He runs down the first base line, it sounds like a horse, just big and strong and fast.' ___ AP MLB:

Transgender woman sues Princeton for 'humiliating' removal from track meet

TRENTON, N.J. — A transgender woman has sued Princeton University claiming she was illegally removed shortly before her race in a school-hosted track meet in May due to her gender identity. An attorney for Sadie Schreiner filed the complaint in New Jersey Superior Court on Tuesday, listing the school along with athletic director John Mack and director of track operations Kimberly Keenan-Kirkpatrick as defendants. The lawsuit also lists New York-based Leone Timing and Results Services as a defendant in its role of handling official timing for organized track and field events.
