AI is no longer a futuristic concept. Despite all the buzz and attention AI has received in recent years, many leaders still hesitate when it comes to integrating it into their everyday workflows. There's a common uncertainty around where to begin and a lingering question: What real, tangible value will AI bring to the table?
Here's the truth: You don't need to be a data scientist to benefit from AI. You already possess the most critical asset for implementing a successful AI strategy: your own knowledge, experience and understanding of your business. When these strengths are paired with the right tools, that insight becomes exponentially more impactful. It's not about learning how to code or developing algorithms from scratch—it's about leveraging what you already know in smarter, faster ways.
As someone who's spent years building and deploying enterprise-grade AI solutions in the construction tech space, I've seen firsthand that the most successful AI outcomes come from empowering people, not replacing them. Below are five key principles that will help you fully harness AI's potential while keeping you firmly at the center of the process.
1. You Already Have the Data, AI Just Unlocks Its Value
Most businesses today have comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems that store a tremendous amount of valuable data. However, extracting insights from that data is often a slow, manual process. Teams commonly rely on reporting requests that can take days, or even weeks, to complete.
AI changes this dynamic completely. With the ability to rapidly analyze massive datasets, AI can surface patterns and trends in real time. This drastically reduces bottlenecks and accelerates decision making. The best part? You're not starting from scratch. You're using AI to finally unlock the full value of the data you've already spent years collecting.
2. AI Reveals Trends That Help Shape Strategy
AI's value isn't limited to simply answering questions; it also helps uncover patterns that might otherwise be missed. Imagine a sudden increase in Requests for Information (RFIs) on a job site. Without AI, that signal might get lost in the noise. But with AI analyzing the data, it becomes clear that there may be coordination or communication issues that require attention.

Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has revealed a stunning backflip on the controversial plan to axe dozens of jobs in favour of artificial intelligence (AI). The country's biggest bank sparked fury after becoming one of the first big-name brands to cite AI as the reason behind a slew of redundancies. The original plan was set to see up to 90 people lose their positions, with about half of those being replaced by a new AI chatbot designed to help customers. But CBA has announced a slight shift in that plan. Financial Services Union national secretary Julia Angrisano said it's a common-sense move, but warned it's certainly not the time for a "victory lap" just yet. "CBA has been caught out trying to dress up job cuts as innovation. Using AI as a cover for slashing secure jobs is a cynical cost-cutting exercise, and workers know it." While she welcomed the news, she admitted that the damage had been "already done". It comes as many Aussies have mixed feelings about the new tech. A poll of more than 1,400 Yahoo Finance readers found 40 per cent "hate" using AI at work, while 21 per cent are fearful their job will soon be replaced by it. Only 7 per cent felt their job wouldn't be affected by is happening to CBA staff set to be axed in favour of AI? CBA revealed that the staff set to be affected by the AI shift have been given two options. They can either keep their job or take a voluntary redundancy. 'CBA's initial assessment that the 45 roles were not required did not adequately consider all relevant business considerations, and this error meant the roles were not redundant,' a spokesperson for the bank said. 'We have apologised to the employees concerned and acknowledge we should have been more thorough in our assessment of the roles required. "We are also reviewing our internal processes to improve our approach going forward.' Aussie companies warned over replacing workers with AI Unions are calling for workers to have a seat at the table when businesses, big and small, want to adopt AI. Aussie tech company Atlassian recently announced 150 people would lose their jobs and some of their tasks would be handled by AI. Telstra has been the other big-name company admitting that AI will likely see its workforce get smaller in the coming years as the technology outperforms humans in certain roles. It has also mandated every worker to start using AI to see if it can help with certain tasks. Angrisano said FSU members wanted to be "trained and supported into better jobs that leverage AI", not just shown the door because better tech has arrived. 'There is a human cost to this. You can't just replace frontline jobs with a voice bot and expect the same service for customers," she said. Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) assistant national secretary Melissa Payne said there has to be a future where workers and AI come together and it's not a pick between one or the other. She said people deserve to have "the right to a strong say in how new technology will affect their jobs and industries". "We can't sit back and let multinationals and big businesses like Telstra make all the decisions on AI," she said. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is pushing for tougher regulations that ensure companies invest in skills development and retraining, have transparency over technology use, and create "genuine" privacy and data collection and use protections. CBA's $2 billion gamble on AI CBA has been investing heavily in the new technology to drive up efficiencies, plunging $2 billion into finding new ways to complete certain tasks. 'To meet the changing needs of our customers, like many organisations, we review the skills we need and how we're organised to deliver the best customer experiences and outcomes. That means some roles and work can change,' a CBA spokesperson told Yahoo Finance. 'Our investment in technology, including AI, is making it easier and faster for customers to get help, especially in our call centres. 'By automating simple queries, our teams can focus on more complex customer queries that need empathy and experience.' The bank has rolled out a ChatGPT-style messaging tool for business customers who have certain questions they need answered at any hour of the day. Gone are the days when firing off dozens of resumes was enough. Today's job seekers need to be intentional, strategic, and prepared to navigate both human and AI gatekeepers. Below is a 12‑step roadmap—plus guidance on AI interviews—that will help you land not just any job, but the right one aligned with your goals, values, and vision. Strong job searches begin with clarity and self-awareness. Reflect on your unique strengths, values, purpose, your competitive advantages and your personal brand, and the workplace cultures and styles that energize you. Engaging in journaling about these questions, taking some helpful Career Path Assessments, or working with a coach can help uncover situations and environments where you can thrive—will set the stage for longer-term success and fulfillment. Casting too wide a net can dilute your efforts. Hone your search to industries and roles where your expertise is most relevant. Draft a description of the ideal role you'd be thrilled to assume, including key responsibilities, work culture, skills, projects, outcomes you'd be excited to contribute to, and compensation that would make this role ideal for you. Writing this 'north star' description paves the way for you to articulate exactly what you want. It also helps mentors, colleagues and supporters connect you with the right opportunities. Before applying, dig into a company's values and leadership style. Use Glassdoor, listen to leadership interviews or earnings calls, and follow company social media. Ask: Do they invest in employee growth? Do their leaders model integrity and other values I need and want in the leadership and others in the organization? This step ensures you do your homework the best you can before interviewing, so you won't land in a toxic culture or ill-fitting situation that will unsustainable. Your resume needs to be ATS (Applicant Tracking System) friendly. Use clean formatting, role-specific keywords, and demonstrate measurable, specific results you've achieved. On LinkedIn, keep your profile fresh, post key insights regularly, follow leaders that inspire you, and showcase your expertise. Remember: recruiters often review your online presence and activity before deciding to reach out. And don't let AI write your resume for you. Personalization and authenticity are critical today, if you want to stand out. Approach your search like a sales funnel. Build a long list of potential employers, then prioritize the ones that align most closely with your goals. Research their leadership, hiring practices, and current challenges, the thought leadership and values they share publicly and on social media. Tailored applications with organization-specific information have far more impact than scattershot submissions. And your advance intel will help you tailor your outreach and your communications for greater efficacy. Don't just apply through job boards. Reach out directly to hiring managers, recruiters, and employees you're connected with, in your target companies. Reference shared values or recent company developments in your messages. Personalized outreach—sometimes even at off-peak hours—can make your message stand out. Success story: A job seeker landed a role in under two months by treating their job search like a sales cycle: narrowing from 200–250 potential companies to a shortlist, personalizing outreach, tracking engagement, and following up strategically. Targeting networking—not mass applications—is still the most powerful way to uncover and connect with desired open roles. Be clear on your goals, offer help in return, and build trust and connection—not just contacts. Your networking efforts won't be effective if it's all transaction in nature, and not coming from a place of wanting to give support and help as much as get it. Some great jobs emerge unexpectedly. One of my clients interviewed for a project management position that wasn't her ideal next step. But she impressed the hiring team so much that she was offered a higher-level marketing role instead that she was thrilled with. Staying open, always bringing your best, and being resilient and flexible makes a big difference. Keep a system to manage applications, outreach, and follow-ups. Treat each lead like part of a pipeline. This structured approach reduces overwhelm, keeps you on track, and ensures you're consistently advancing opportunities rather than waiting passively. The newest frontier in job search is the rise of AI interviewers. Some companies now use AI to screen video interviews, evaluating not only your words but also tone, body language, and even attire. EquipmentShare, a construction equipment rental company backed by BDT & MSD Partners, is considering moving ahead with an IPO as soon as this year, according to people familiar with the matter. The Columbia, Missouri-based company is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp. on the offering, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the information isn't public. The listing could raise more than $1 billion, the person said.
