NYC Transit workers reunite woman with her 25-year-old ring: ‘Extraordinary'
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11)— MTA employees are essential in moving millions of New Yorkers throughout the city daily. On Thursday, they helped a 'devastated' woman who accidentally dropped her ring into a sidewalk grate above the No. 6 train.
'[It was] such an overwhelming moment for me because this ring has been on my finger for 25 years and has extraordinary emotional value to me,' said 70-year-old Myra Lora, a Bronx resident. 'No words can describe my happiness at being reunited with this ring, and I am so grateful to the New York City Transit workers who returned it to me.'

On Thursday, Lora and her boyfriend were walking on Lexington Avenue near 103 Street when she removed her glove. That's when her ring came off her finger, according to the MTA.
The gold ring, engraved with the names of her three children, has been hers for 25 years. Luckily, however, it landed on an elevated shelf between spaces in the grate above the sidewalk. Lora and her male companion tried to retrieve it but could not grab it.
They contacted the MTA, and an hour later, New York City Transit Maintenance employees were on the scene.
A video provided by the MTA shows three employees in orange vests sectioning off the area where the ring fell. Lora and her boyfriend are at the scene, thanking the MTA employees for showing up. The employees remove the grate and hand the gold ring to Lora, who has tears in her eyes.
'Thank you very much,' Lora said, tears in her eyes, as she hugged one of the MTA employees.
'I'm so happy we were able to reunite Myra with her most precious jewel. I feel so lucky to experience these moments when these incidents occur, and Myra's graciousness and appreciation made reuniting her with that ring so special.'

Maryland Safe Haven opens new housing facility, community hub supporting LGBTQ+ community
Maryland Safe Haven is launching a new housing facility and community hub this week that supports members of the LGBTQIA+ community. WJZ toured the new building ahead of their grand opening on Friday. "We are meeting the community where they are by providing shelter, safety, and community," said Melissa Devereaux, the executive assistant at Maryland Safe Haven. What does the Safe Haven housing facility offer? Safe Haven acquired the former MICA dormitory on Collington Avenue in December 2024. The 12 residential units will offer temporary and permanent housing for members of the LGBTQ+ community in need of support. "I was going from house to house to house and feeling like no one really cared," Courtney Wilson said. The 28-year-old client turned volunteer, told WJZ that Safe Haven's housing and wraparound services are giving her a fresh start and a sense of community. "It makes me feel relieved," Wilson said. "I feel like I can motivate myself and keep pushing." The building's community hub will offer services, including medical, mental health care, and workforce development. "We couldn't have asked for a better space because it accommodates all of our needs," said Renee Lau, the special projects coordinator. Lau said she's excited to share the space with the city at the grand opening on Friday, June 13, at 1 p.m. "We'll be doing a tour of the facility, we'll be doing a demonstration of all of our programs," Lau said. "We will be here for this community." Ringing in a new era Devereaux and other leaders of Maryland Safe Haven said the Senator Mary Washington building and Jeanette Weinberg community hub mark a new era for the organization. "We will be able to extend our services astronomically, because we actually have a space that will be open 24/7," Devereaux said. For more information, visit the Safe Haven website here.

LIRR service resumes after electrical fire in Grand Central Madison
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Long Island Railroad trains are back on schedule after an electrical fire broke out in a tunnel at Grand Central Madison Tuesday morning, officials said. Authorities responded to the incident at 8:15 a.m., and it took several hours and more than 100 firefighters to contain the smoky tunnel, according to FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker. The heavy smoke conditions were in the basement of the LIRR tracks, officials said. 'There was zero visibility down there,' Tucker said. Three firefighters and a civilian suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FDNY. All Grand Central-bound trains were diverted to Penn Station or Jamaica due to the incident, according to the MTA. The trains were back on schedule at around 2:40 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
