SINGAPORE - Some analysts and billionaire investors have recommended moving investments away from US assets wholly in the current volatile geopolitical climate.
However, the best investment move would be to not overcommit to any one solution and take smaller steps while diversifying risks.
This was the advice given by Mr George Yeo at the UBS CIO mid-year outlook seminar on July 1 held at the Fairmont Hotel.
Mr Yeo, who was foreign minister from 2004 to 2011, was sharing his views in a dialogue with Ms Tan Min Lan, head of the Asia Pacific Investment Office at UBS Global Wealth Management.
He stressed that despite rising tensions amid an ongoing tariff war, US-China relations should stabilise in the next five to 10 years as both superpowers are unlikely to escalate tensions further.
For investors, this means that there is no sure-bet on a single horse . They should diversify their risks accordingly as the global economy transitions to a multi-polar world, with Europe also moving away from its economic and military dependence on the US.
'The ground is shaking, so build smaller structures linked together sensibly instead of bigger structures. Don't assume one outcome or the other, but diversify risks in your portfolio, whether you are a country, company, family or individual.'
While the US is perceived to be on a political decline in Asia given recent policy shifts and upheavals by the Trump administration, as well as an increasing divide in its domestic politics and society, Mr Yeo said the country has historically shown its ability to recover from downturns and renew itself. Amid talk of the end of American exceptionalism, he countered that its legacy will continue to endure for decades.
At the same time, he added that the world has already been headed towards an increasingly divided global environment, and the arrival of Mr Donald Trump as US president has only hastened this outcome. 'In the short term, we have the phenomenon of Trump and everyone gets nervous about what he says. But he is being carried by big events. He will come and he will go, and he would have quickened the arrival of the multi-polar world. I describe him as fast-forwarding the future.'
A multi-polar world may spell even more uncertainty for global markets, but Mr Yeo emphasised the importance of adaptability and flexibility. 'We have to be prepared to speak multiple languages and work on multiple operating platforms, instead of just being stuck on one.'
Playing down China's increasingly prominent role in geopolitics, Mr Yeo said the Asian giant's focus is on keeping the peace in the region as it is not in its interests to get involved in the distant conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. South-east Asia could see transformation 'beyond recognition' in this new era of peace, he added.
A weakening US dollar would open the door for more growth in Asia, with local currencies expected to appreciate another 3 per cent to 4 per cent over the next 12 months. Regional financial conditions would also be eased as a result – a positive sign for local equity markets.
Sharing her views on the growth potential in the region, Ms Tan said the bank has upgraded Singapore equities to 'attractive' due to the stability of the local market amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
'Singapore offers a defensive safe haven backed by a stable currency, generous dividend yields and a steady earnings outlook. The ongoing equity market reforms provide additional catalysts in the form of a $5 billion capital injection and potential value-up initiatives to unlock shareholder value.'
With the US dollar's traditional role as a relative 'safe haven' during periods of market uncertainty no longer guaranteed, Ms Tan recommends diversifying to other currencies such as the euro and the Australian dollar, while allocations to gold are also a good option to diversify political risks.
Artificial intelligence (AI) was highlighted as one of the biggest areas for strong returns, given accelerated adoption and monetisation in infrastructure and semiconductors . Other areas ripe for investment growth include power and resources, amid surging electricity demand and the global energy transition; as well as longevity due to demographic shifts and rapid innovations in healthcare, medtech and wellness.
The ongoing technological race that the US and China are locked in, proliferated by developments in AI, would ultimately lead to a split , said Mr Yeo.
His sentiments were shared by Dr Kai-Fu Lee, chief executive of Chinese AI company 01.AI, who also spoke at the seminar.
'American companies are typically more willing to take risks and this leads to higher levels of innovation. Chinese companies, on the other hand, are more risk-averse, but they have stronger engineering capabilities and this allows them to quickly close the gap with the US.'
The tables have also been turned in the tech industry, with China defying expectations by championing the development of open-source AI language models for unfettered access, including DeepSeek and Quant. Conversely, American tech giants Google, OpenAI and X (formerly Twitter) are increasingly closed-off.
But the former president of Google China, who is also the chairman of Sinovation Ventures, a Beijing-based venture capital firm focusing on next-gen deep tech companies, was quick to note that the AI race is not static and there is still a lot of room for China to catch up.
He said China still needs top-end graphics processing units, or GPUs, to accelerate its development, and these are usually reserved for US companies.
'The venture capital ecosystem is also not as strong as 10 years ago, and it needs to rebuild again,' he added.

San Francisco – founder Jeff Bezos sold 3.3 million the company's shares in recent days, netting US$736.7 million (S$938 million). The sale, which coincided with his star-studded wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice, is part of a 10b5-1 trading plan Mr Bezos adopted in March for up to 25 million shares. Since then, Amazon's stock price has climbed more than 8 per cent alongside a broader rally in US markets. Mr Bezos, 61, is the third-richest man in the world with a US$241.4 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He routinely uses 10b5-1 trading plans which allow company insiders to offload shares at predetermined times. He sold 75 million shares in 2024 for a total of US$13.6 billion through such plans. Since 2002, Mr Bezos has unloaded Amazon shares worth about US$44 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. He's a much less frequent buyer of the stock, making his first purchase in 2023 according to records going back to 2002 – a single share for US$114.77. Mr Bezos often sells his Amazon shares to fund Blue Origin, the space company he started in 2000. In January, it debuted its new flagship rocket and successfully reached orbit after years in development, but a month later, it cut about 10 per cent of its workforce in surprise layoffs as it looks to cut costs. The stock sales mark Mr Bezos' first for 2025, but he has given away nearly 930,000 shares to nonprofits in 2025. In March, Bezos reported gifting shares worth around US$60 million at the time to undisclosed charities. In May, he gifted another bundle of shares worth roughly US$125 million, followed by another US$5 million in June. Mr Bezos typically gives to support his Bezos Earth Fund, which is a US$10 billion commitment to fight climate change, and the Bezos Day One Fund, a US$2 billion philanthropic initiative focused on homelessness. Chipmakers win bigger tax credit under bill passed by Senate

[WASHINGTON] Sweeping tax legislation passed by the Senate on Tuesday (Jul 1) would make it cheaper for semiconductor manufacturers to build plants in the US, delivering a win to chipmakers and boosting US efforts to expand the industry domestically. Companies such as Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Micron Technology will be eligible for an investment tax credit of 35 per cent if they break ground on new plants before an existing 2026 deadline. That's a jump from the existing 25 per cent and tops an increase to 30 per cent envisioned in a draft proposal. The semiconductor manufacturing provision was tucked into a nearly 900-page bill that represents the heart of US President Donald Trump's economic agenda. House lawmakers are now set to take up the legislation with a goal of sending it to Trump for his signature by Jul 4. Increases to the credit would sweeten a key incentive created under the 2022 Chips and Science Act, a bipartisan law signed by president Joe Biden. The programme also includes US$39 billion in grants and as much as US$75 billion in loans for manufacturing projects, designed to boost the American semiconductor industry after decades of production shifting to Asia. The tax credit, which is not capped, was already likely to be costlier than those other forms of subsidies – a function of how much investment the Chips Act has spurred. In almost every case, it will account for the greatest share of incentives going to any one company, including those that did not win grant awards. Major beneficiaries of the grant programme include Intel, TSMC, Micron and Samsung Electronics. Trump earlier this year called for repealing the Chips Act, but lawmakers in both parties have shown little desire to eliminate subsidies that provide high-paying jobs in their districts, in a sector seen as critical to national security. The Commerce Department, meanwhile, has continued to implement the grant programme, while urging larger investments and reworking the terms of awards that took months to negotiate. So far, the Trump administration has secured increases in promised investment from TSMC, Micron and GlobalFoundries, which the White House has touted as evidence that Trump's policies are working. None of those included additional Chips Act grants beyond what had already been finalised or proposed. Still, more company spending on projects very likely means more foregone government revenue in the form of tax credits – a number that would grow if the Senate bill becomes law. Companies that commence projects by the end of next year can continue to claim credits for continuous construction after that date – a policy aimed at getting sites started while recognising that chip factories take years to build. A JURY in San Jose, California, said on Tuesday that Google misused customers' cell phone data and must pay more than US$314.6 million to Android smartphone users in the state, according to an attorney for the plaintiffs. The jury agreed with the plaintiffs that Alphabet's Google was liable for sending and receiving information from the devices without permission while they were idle, causing what the lawsuit had called 'mandatory and unavoidable burdens shouldered by Android device users for Google's benefit.' Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in a statement that the company would appeal, and that the verdict 'misunderstands services that are critical to the security, performance, and reliability of Android devices.' The plaintiffs' attorney Glen Summers said the verdict 'forcefully vindicates the merits of this case and reflects the seriousness of Google's misconduct.' The plaintiffs filed the class action in state court in 2019 on behalf of an estimated 14 million Californians. They argued that Google collected information from idle phones running its Android operating system for company uses like targeted advertising, consuming Android users' cellular data at their expense. Google told the court that no Android users were harmed by the data transfers and that users consented to them in the company's terms of service and privacy policies. Another group filed a separate lawsuit in federal court in San Jose, bringing the same claims against Google on behalf of Android users in the other 49 states. That case is scheduled for trial in April 2026. REUTERS
