Farmers' raise concerns over renovation works disrupting cultivation in Thoothukudi

The Hindu17-07-2025
Farmers in Thoothukud district have voiced their concerns during the monthly grievance redress meeting, stating that the ongoing renovation works in water bodies are affecting the crop cultivation, even though water has been released for irrigational activities.
The meeting held at the district collectorate was chaired by Thoothukdi Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting, the collector addressed various grievances submitted by the farmers.
At the meeting the farmers requested to organise an agricultural exhibition in Thoothukudi district. They also urged the immediate release of funds for crop damage caused by December 2024 floods and compensation for chillies and shallots, which were damaged during the 2023 floods. They noted that Vilathikulam and Sivagnanapuram region farmers still await the compensation.
The farmers further highlighted the integrated plan to control weed in rainfed areas. They demanded an increase in the procurement price of milk and to hike the salaries of the milk cooperative society employees. In addition, they called for uninterrupted supply of quality seeds and fertilizers, and urged the withdrawal of requiring a CIBIL score for issuing agricultural loans.
A request was also made for the establishment of a storage facility at Melachekkarakudi for storing black gram, green gram and maize. Framers suggested that government-subsidised hybrid coconut saplings, which are said to yield higher income, should be demonstrated on fertile lands with farmers taken for exposure visits.
Addressing the grievances Mr. Elambahavath said that agricultural exhibitions are conducted at zonal level. This year, it is scheduled to be held in Tirunelveli, and farmers from Thoothukudi district will be invited to participate.
The assessment of the December 2024 flood related crop damage has been completed and a proposal sent to the government, which includes ₹59 crore for agricultural crops, ₹14.6 crore for horticultural crops and compensation for banana crops damaged by gale in the last April. Relief for crop damage during the 2023 floods is still pending and is expected shortly.
He added that assessment will be conducted to control weeds in rainfed areas and things such as milk procurement price, reducing rental charges of agricultural equipment are under government policy decisions. If special schemes are introduced, efforts will be made to offer concessions to farmers.
The Collector further noted that the delay in water release at some places was due to essential renovation works and has advised the PWD officials to plan such activities. Measures will be taken in the future to prevent such delays and ensure that any infrastructure work disrupt any farming activities.
Officials from Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Horticulture Department, Public Works Department were amongst those present.

PMRDA to fund 19cr bungalow project at Pune's Raj Bhavan

Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has agreed in principle to fund construction of two new bungalows on the Raj Bhavan premises along Baner Road at an estimated project cost of Rs19 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The proposed structures will serve as the governor's residence and house visiting VVIPs. The upcoming Pune Metro Line 3 will pass close to the estate, officials said. PMRDA has initiated the project and sought a small portion of land for a Metro ramp near the boundary of the Raj Bhavan premises, which include two bungalows and an additional office facility. Senior PMRDA officials told TOI, "We have conveyed our willingness to finance the construction project. However, technical approvals and clearances are awaited from the state govt." The public works department (PWD), tasked with designing the project, has submitted the preliminary proposal to PMRDA. "The govt will take further decisions," said a senior PWD official. PWD's outline shows that the two bungalows will be constructed on open land adjacent to the Yashada Institute within the Raj Bhavan compound. Each bungalow will span approximately 818.7sqm. The move to redevelop a portion of the Raj Bhavan premises gained momentum after the alignment of Metro Line 3 — Shivajinagar to Hinjewadi — was finalised. The line runs along the protective wall on the side of Baner Road. Officials said the proximity of the Metro alignment raised the need to upgrade residential and protocol infrastructure. An office building is part of the plan to facilitate visiting dignitaries' staff and official protocol teams. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The estimated project cost of Rs19 crore was derived using plinth area rates notified under a state govt directive issued in Dec 2020. PWD officials said the figure could rise, depending on final specifications and inflation in construction costs. While the proposal focuses on new construction, officials clarified that there is no plan to demolish the existing heritage bungalows. "The new structures are being planned on vacant land," the PWD official added. "We have committed to the project, but no further discussion has taken place," said a PWD official. "Necessary clearances and approvals are pending," said a PMRDA official. At present, the state govt is considering the proposal and will move ahead after administrative sanctions and design approvals.

NIT-Owned Road in Ruins as PWD Delays Work, NMC Steps In with Temporary Fixes

1 2 Nagpur: The key road connecting Awasthi Square to Katol Bypass Ring Road via Zingabai Takli remains in a hazardous state, with potholes, waterlogging, and no streetlights — despite being under the watch of three government agencies: the Public Works Department (PWD), Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). With no action from either PWD or NIT, the NMC — which technically doesn't own the road — stepped in after persistent TOI coverage and citizen complaints. Initially, the civic body filled potholes with gravel and sand, which washed away in the rain. It later deployed tar and gravel and cleared drainage points to offer some temporary relief. However, the stretch continues to endanger two-wheeler riders, especially near ESAF Bank. Though Union Minister Nitin Gadkari sanctioned Rs2.38 crore under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) in 2022-23 to construct a cement road between Zenda Chowk and Awasthi Square, only 200 metres — up to Purushottam Super Market — has received final sanction. The most damaged section remains stuck in red tape. PWD officials said the proposal has been sent and they are hopeful of a sanction by December. Newly posted PWD engineer Laxmikant Raulkar has promised to review the file. NIT engineer Pankaj Ambhorkar declined comment, citing protocol. "The waterlogged potholes and lack of streetlights make daily travel a gamble," said Zingabai Takli resident Piyush Janbandhu. The delay exposes the pitfalls of fractured governance and overlapping agency control. Unless the full project is sanctioned and a single agency takes charge, residents will remain caught between potholes, poor planning, and bureaucratic indifference.
