Have enough evidence for watertight case, say cops

Time of India06-07-2025
Kolkata: Cops probing the law college gang-rape case, say they have enough evidence for a watertight case, even as they plan to appeal for three more days of police custody for all four accused to strengthen the case when they are produced before Alipore court on Tuesday.
The four — Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and college security guard Pinaki Banerjee — have been in police custody for 11 days. Investigators said extending custody will allow them to further strengthen the case with additional evidence and corroborative statements.
"We appealed for the full term of police custody period when they were produced before this court last week. Depending on the progress of the probe, we will decide on Tuesday whether we will seek an extension of the police custody period, as we can still ask for at least three days of custody before the magistrate sends them to jail," said Sourin Ghoshal, public prosecutor at Alipore court.

A senior officer said they have already accumulated all major evidence. "The charge sheet will be filed soon and we expect the trial will proceed while the accused remain in custody," said a senior officer.
Cops claimed several key steps have already been completed. These include recording testimonies of 18 witnesses, conducting crime scene reconstruction with all accused present, video-graphing the process, and creating a 3D mapping of the location.

Key physical evidence — a bed sheet, a hockey stick, clothes worn by the accused, and DNA samples — have been seized. CCTV footage from the college and a nearby medical shop, as well as the mobile tower data, align with the survivor's version of events.
The survivor's medical report, which notes injuries consistent with her complaint, has also been submitted.
Police have detained a second security guard who was on duty on the evening of June 25. This guard reportedly left the campus around 8.25 pm — close to the time Zaib stepped out to purchase an inhaler for the survivor.
Investigators are also looking into the role of other college administrators, particularly to determine if anyone enabled or ignored Mishra's influence.

Consumer authority slaps Rs 10 lakh fine on Rapido for misleading ads, unfair trade practices

NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on ride-hailing platform Rapido for disseminating misleading advertisements and engaging in unfair trade practices. The action was taken suo motu by the authority following investigation into the company's advertisement claim: 'Guaranteed Auto. Auto in 5 mins or get Rs 50'. The CCPA, in its order issued on Wednesday, directed Rapido to immediately discontinue the misleading advertisements and compensate consumers who were not provided the promised cashback. Each affected consumer is to be paid Rs 50, as originally advertised. It also instructed the company to file a compliance report within 15 days. According to CCPA, Rapido's misleading advertisement ran for over 18 months in multiple regional languages and across more than 120 cities. 'Therefore, the CCPA finds it necessary to impose a penalty to safeguard the interests of consumers,' it said. As per the order, between April 2023 and May 2024, 575 complaints were filed against Rapido on the National Consumer Helpline and these covered issues such as non-refund of amounts, overcharging, service deficiency, and failure to provide promised benefits. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 1 Reason to Read The 5 Books American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends For Turning Your Life... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Of these, five complaints were directly related to the misleading 'guaranteed auto' claim. Consumers had reported that instead of receiving Rs 50 upon failure to get an auto within 5 minutes, they were credited with only Rs 5 in Rapido coins — which could only be redeemed against bike rides and expired within seven days. The authority found that these terms were neither clearly stated nor prominently displayed. In its defence, the company submitted that the terms and conditions were clear that customers would be eligible for coins 'up to Rs 50 which could be redeemed against Bike rides on Rapido platform' and that the validity of such coins was for 7 days from the time it is credited to customer's wallet. However, the CCPA noted that the advertisements did not include the term 'up to', and the 'T&C Apply' disclaimer was barely visible, misleading the average consumer. Rly cops accused of extorting money from jeweller in Mumbai seek pre-arrest bail

Mumbai: The three railway policemen accused of intimidating a jeweller and extorting money from him at Mumbai Central Terminus recently have applied for anticipatory bail before a sessions court. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday. The GRP's crime branch said the trio is absconding. In the wake of the incident, the Govt Railway Police (GRP) commissioner will be putting together a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) with regard to luggage checking. The SOP will require that the same police personnel are not involved in bag checking and that their duty is fixed on a rotational basis. On Aug 10, a Rajasthan-based jeweller and his eight-year-old daughter were about to board the Duranto Express from Mumbai Central Terminus when a cop asked them to halt for baggage examination. He found a gold biscuit and Rs 32,000 cash in the luggage and would not accept the jeweller's explanation. He summoned a colleague and the duo then took the jeweller and his daughter before a "senior" at a beat chowky. The jeweller was slapped and threatened with time behind bars. On repeated occasions in the past, uniformed personnel have been found extorting money from passengers under the guise of baggage checking. Previous GRP commissioners had issued circulars in 2014-2015 to keep a check on such illegal activities. The circulars had stated that baggage checking should not be done unless there was a reason for suspicion and in such circumstances, an officer of inspector-rank should check the bag under CCTV surveillance. The circulars also stated that policemen should not move in civil clothes while on platform duty. The circulars added that if baggage checking was necessary, the GRP could rope in another security agency such as the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to assist them. The SOP will include directions from previous circulars besides coming up with new orders. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
