Kyiv mourns after Russian attack that killed 31 people, including five children
It was the highest number of children killed and injured in a single attack on Kyiv since aerial attacks on the city began in October 2022, according to official casualty figures reported by The Associated Press.
The death toll rose overnight as emergency crews continued to dig through rubble. The Russian barrage demolished a large part of a nine-story residential building in the city, while more than 100 other buildings were damaged, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities and universities, officials said.
Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent months, ignoring calls from Western leaders including US president Donald Trump to stop striking civilian areas after more than three years of war.
Russian forces are also pressing on with their grinding war of attrition along the 620-mile front line, where incremental gains over the past year have cost the lives of thousands of soldiers on both sides.
Mr Zelensky said that in July, Russia launched over 5,100 glide bombs, more than 3,800 Shahed drones, and nearly 260 missiles of various types, 128 of them ballistic, against Ukraine.
He repeated his appeal for countries to impose heavier economic sanctions on Russia to deter the Kremlin, as US-led peace efforts have failed to gain traction.
'No matter how much the Kremlin denies (sanctions') effectiveness, they are working and must be stronger,' Mr Zelensky said.
His comments on Friday appeared to be a response to Mr Trump's remarks the previous day, when the Republican president said the US plans to impose sanctions on Russia but added, 'I don't know that sanctions bother him,' in reference to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine also called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to be convened on Friday, foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said, in an effort to push Mr Putin into accepting 'a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire'.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are under heavy pressure in the strategic hilltop city of Chasiv Yar, in the eastern Donetsk region where Russia is making a concerted push to break through defences after some 18 months of fighting.
Mr Zelensky said that Russian claims of capturing Chasiv Yar on Thursday were 'disinformation'.
'Ukrainian units are holding our positions,' Mr Zelensky said in his daily video address on Thursday evening. 'It is not easy, but it is the defence of Ukrainians' very right to life.'
Russia's Defence Ministry said on Friday that air defences shot down 60 Ukrainian drones overnight.
More than half were destroyed over Russia's Belgorod region on the country's border with Ukraine, it said.

Russia nuclear submarine base damaged after earthquake
A nuclear submarine base in Russia's remote far east region was damaged last week after one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit the area in decades, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing satellite images. Photos captured by Planet Labs, a commercial satellite imaging firm, show damage to a floating pier at the Rybachiy submarine base on the Kamchatka Peninsula. One section of the pier appears to have broken away from its anchor point. Aside from the damaged pier, the satellite imagery does not show any other major destruction. Reuters could not independently verify the report. Russia's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A powerful magnitude-8.8 earthquake off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka coast on Wednesday triggered tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile, and was followed by an eruption of the most active volcano on the peninsula. The earthquake was one of the most powerful ever recorded but resulted in relatively small amounts of damage thanks to a global and highly successful disaster response effort. The worst damage was seen in Russia, where a tsunami crashed through the port of Severo-Kurilsk and submerged the local fishing plant, officials said. Russian state television footage showed buildings and debris swept into the sea. The surge of water reached as far as the town's second world war monument about 400 meters from the shoreline. The initial quake also caused limited damage and only light injuries, despite being the strongest since 2011, when 15,000 people were killed in Japan. The Rybachiy nuclear submarine base – a strategic hub for Russia's Pacific fleet – serves as a facility for the maintenance, deployment and operations of the country's nuclear-powered submarines in the Pacific region.

Brega begins its fuel truck e-tracking system to counter smuggling
Libya's Brega Oil Marketing Company, the National Oil Corporation's (NOC) subsidiary charged with fuel imports and distribution, announced today that it has started its automated fuel truck tracking system. Brega said the operations and automated tracking room was inaugurated by its Chairman, Fouad Ali Balrahim, in the presence of Board members and several managers and company officials. A quantum leap Brega said the step is a quantum leap in direct communications with the drivers of the company's fuel trucks and immediate response to any emergency faced by the company's drivers, as well as enforcing regulations on speed compliance and good behaviour on the public road. Brega said that among the most important advantages of the system are: * The possibility of direct communication with drivers. * SOS emergency alarm system. * Ability to stop the truck engine remotely. * Accurate identification of cargo unloading locations. The project was implemented under the supervision of the General Directorate of Information and Communications Technology, and will manage the main operations room of the tracking process in cooperation with the departments concerned with controlling the movement of fuel trucks. This project, Brega added, underscores its commitment to digital transformation and enhanced oversight to serve the public interest. If successful, a possible quantum leap in Libya's anti-fuel smuggling efforts? Successive Libyan governments since the 2011 revolution have made unsuccessful efforts to counter the country's huge cross land and sea border fuel smuggling problem. Last month, Naji Issa, Governor of the Central Bank of Libya put the country's annual fuel smuggling bill at about LD 20 billion (US$ 2.7 bn). This equates to about a third of all annual government fuel subsidies. The launch of e-tracking of fuel trucks is part of the government's wider effort to counter this fuel smuggling across land to neighbouring countries and across the sea to states where fuel prices are unsubsidised to the high levels of Libya. A subsidised litre of petrol in Libya today costs LD 0.15 – about US$ 0.02. It will be recalled that in July 2024, Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, and the head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, attended a workshop on launching an enhanced fuel truck tracking and fuel monitoring system on Brega fuel trucks. This ''anti-fuel smuggling system'' involves converting the fuel outlet valves on fuel delivery trucks from simple mechanical valves that can be opened by anyone at any time, to electronic valves that can only be opened at the targeted petrol station. The system also includes an electronic fuel gauge to measure the amount of fuel delivered; electronically sealed fuel inlets and control cameras fitted to the delivery truck. In parallel to this, an electronic gauge is to be installed at the fuel tanks in petrol stations. Formation of a technical committee At the workshop, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a technical committee from all relevant authorities to evaluate the system and the practical steps to be taken to ensure its implementation throughout the country. Fuel consumption quotas for citizens and unsubsidized prices for foreigners Moreover, at the July 2024 workshop, subsequent possible and more advanced phases of the system included fitting electronic fuel pumps at petrol stations that can identify if the refuelling citizen's car has used up its allotted subsidised fuel consumption quota, if it is reported as stollen, or if it belongs to a foreigner. Foreigners could pay higher unsubsidised fuel price The system could be set up so thatforeigners would pay a higher unsubsidized price for petrol. Quotas are the average worked out by the government of how much fuel the average Libyan citizen consumes per day/week/month/year. Fuel consumption quotas are part of the government's plans to reform fuel subsidies by paying citizens directly the average amount of fuel they consume while raising fuel prices. This is to reduce the abusive consumption and smuggling of fuel across Libya's porous borders. . FBI's annual crime report contradicts statements made by Trump
The FBI 's annual crime report indicates a 4.5 percent decrease in violent crime across the U.S. in 2024. This report contradicts statements made by Donald Trump, who has claimed that crime in the U.S. is 'out of control' and on the rise. Specific reductions highlighted in the FBI report include a 14.9 percent drop in murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 5.2 percent in rape, and 8.9 percent in robbery. Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that violence is rampant, citing examples such as being unable to walk safely for a loaf of bread and claiming crime in Washington, D.C. is 'totally out of control.' Contrary to Trump's assertions about the capital, Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department reported a 35 percent decrease in violent crime in 2024 compared to the previous year.
